Unfortunately, in 1820, the names were listed alphabetically, so you can't tell where one was living in relationship to one another.
I don't know much about John Richardson, son of William, but I saw somewhere that he died abt 1815, apparently without a will. John had young children in his 1810 h/h,(1 male under 10, 1 male 26-44, 1 female undr 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 26-44) I understand that Reddin Richardson, b.1805, is supposed to have been his son. By 1850, Reddin, was living in Johnston Co. near Mark, and Needham Richardson, all of whom were born 1805. So, now we know that Reddin was John's son, Mark was probably Alsey's step-son, but that leaves Needham, who was he? Could he have been Tempy's son? I don't know. But I do know that as I and another researcher mentioned previously on this thread that more than likely after Alsey died, any children living in the household were apprenticed, so they wouldn't show in Charity's home by 1820. Your best bet in that case would be to try to check the County Court Minutes for Nash Co.,after 1810, to see if there is a further record of such.

Deloris

From the records you have can you tell if Charity and Tempy were in close proximity to one another at the time of the 1820 census? Tempy, who was probably living with her father in 1810, has two males with her that would have been Mark Richarson's age. Wonder if Mark could have been sent to her for some reason. There were no young males in William and Tempy's household in 1810. So where did the two teenaged boys come from on the 1820 census? This family gets more interesting.

Are you very familiar with DNA testing? When I had my uncle's DNA test performed I went the cheap route and only did the 33 marker test. Would it have made much of a difference if I had done the 46 marker test? Maybe given me more of a sense of direction to his paternal lineage.

Thanks again.
Tony

Thanks. That also helps identify more of who some of these RICHARDSONs were in Nash Co. So many names pop up there out of nowhere, it seems, it makes things so much easier when we can tell who was who.

Deloris

Alsey RICHARDSON's 1810 Census:
1 WM =under 10 1 WF = 10
1 WM = 16 -25 1 WF = 26 -44

Charity RICHARDSON in 1820:
1 WF = 10-16
1 WF = 26 -45
1 WF = 45+

With the info now that Charity was Alsey's wife, I would assume that she was only a few years older, perhaps Alsey was abt 25, and she was 26-30; Charity may have been the 26 - 45 female in her 1820 census, with the over 45 female perhaps a relative? Just guessing, though, because it seems to me that she would be a little closer to Alsey's age.
Alsey was apparently a little younger than his wife, but he must have died between 1813 (date of father's probate) and 1820, when Charity showed up as head of household. It's possible that any male children were apprenticed out after Alsey's death, would have to check the court records for that time period to be sure of it, though.

Deloris
Frequently, illegitimate male children were apprenticed out at an early age to learn a trade. Reason being, so they would not be a burden to the community. Likely, if the court determined that this child was not the offspring of Alsey R'son, he would have been sent to live with someone who could teach him a trade. This also frequently occurred in the case of a widow with few monetary resources who had young male children.

Deloris, good sleuthing! I have been trying to place Charity and James Willis for years and am so glad you cracked the mystery.

Bless you and thank you!! This just maybe the answer. If the child were a boy I would feel very comfortable with James Willis and Charity Richardson nee Vaughn being the parents. This may explain the Willis paternal DNA showing up in my uncle's profile and the Willis surname being used as a middle name for generations. I noted Alsey Richardson had a male under 10 living with him in 1810. I failed to note if there was a female. I think I will need to resubscribe to Ancestry. The big kink in this is the fact that no males are in Charity's household in 1820. Only daughters. That's worrisome. Could Mark have gone to live with his father?
Thanks again!!
Tony

Tony, one of your earlier messages mentioned that you found Charity in a court record with a James Willis.
I came across something really interesting that I think is the solution to this whole thing. I don't have the Nash Co. Court Minutes for the 1805 and after time period, but I found this in the Nash County Illegitimate Childrens records which are no longer online but I made a copy of the whole thing long ago for myself:

Feb Court 1805
Jas Willis and Charity Vaughn

Feb Court 1806
James Willis and Charity Vaughn [see Feb Court 1805 as well]

May Court 1807
James Willis and Charity Richardson

Aug Court 1807
James Willis and Charity Richardson (fee set)

Feb Court 1810
Jas Willis and Charity Richardson

If this was the same as Charity Richardson, it's possible Vaughn was her maiden name, perhaps she married a Richardson after the original records were created. Certainly the 1805 time period was is the right one for Mark Richardson, and it could also be the solution as to why he bore the Richardson surname.

Deloris

Your information on Tempy may have just ruled her out as Mark's mother. In 1810 there should have been a young male in Williams household. There was not. I just don't know what is going on with Mark. I'm beginning to wonder if he was actually born in Nash. Maybe somewhere else-Edgecombe perhaps or Johnston. Nothing fits with the Nash Richardsons. I know he was illegitimate. Charity had girls and Tempy did not have a son with her in 1810. Mark would have been around five by then and should have been on the census. However, in 1820 Tempy had two males with her that corresponded to Mark's age. I think I am at a deadend with my Richardson line.
Thanks again.
Tony

Tony, I'm glad you also found out how bogus that database is, far too many people just don't realize that. Whoever posted that garbage used little common sense and no ingenuity at all. It had Gideon Richardson, b. 1836, married to Eliza Tayborn, and shows that Gideon was the son of George Richardson & Mary Ballantine. It was Gideon Richardson, b. 1794 who married as a 2nd wife, Eliza Tayborn; Gideon Richardson, b. 1836 didn't even live in Nash Co., and he was the son of Nicholas & Betsy Richardson of Halifax Co.NC; George Richardson & Margaret Ballantine, and again these were families of different races, it is obvious the person posting the info only looked at the 1860 census and that if they had even bothered to check even the 1850 census, they would have seen the families together. I agree, I can't believe all of the children they are showing for Thomas & Sarah Richardson, married 1763, who were born 1806 to 1830. I hope this is a wake-up call for anyone who is using that database, DON'T BELIEVE IT.

As for where was Tempy Richardson in 1810, I think she was living with her father. William Richardson doesn't mention a wife in his 1813 will, so I assume she was already dead. There was only 1 male over 45 and 1 female 26-44 yrs old in his 1810 household, that could very well have been Tempy. It looks like his wife had died by 1810. Notice that in 1800, while the census is messy because 2 sides of the paper are visible, it shows 1 male 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 1 male over 45 and 1 female 16-25, 1 female over 45; Tempy was over 45. Clearly there is a female in Wiliam's h/h in all of the census that match Tempy's age, and she seems to have been his only surviving daughter since another daughter, Winnie had died in 1792 as I previously mentioned.

Deloris
2002 was about the time I first found that database, too. When I first saw it, I thought I had hit the mother lode and was ecstatic, but after a little bit of research on the info I had found, I was shocked at how wrong it was. Much of it looks like someone got most of the info from the 1860 census, without any further research as to what those names meant. It's not just the RICHARDSONs it is just about every name in the database as has been found over the years. Believe me, many people have complained to Ancestry for years, but their attitude is that it makes money for them, and about the only thing they did was add a disclaimer about not being responsible for anything in the database. It's really tragic, though, because many people don't realize how bogus the info is and just accept it; but hopefully the word will at least get to a few more people through this message because Messages posted on the Nash Co. Message Boards are Gatewayed to the Mailing List, too and can be read by people subscribing to that.

Deloris

Thank you again for all the information. I found out the Nash Co. records were, as one genealogist put it, bunk. I had the Genealogy Librarian of Nash Co. helping me with Mark about a year ago and she told me that the info in that data base was flawed. I already had an inkling that something was amiss when Mark's children names were not the names listed on the 1850 census. I got very excited when I saw the reference to Mark as being the son of Thomas Richardson and Sara Eason. But after looking further, their wedding date was listed as 1763 in Edgecombe Co. I doubted that they would have been having children in 1805-42 years later.

If there was only a pattern with the census records maybe this mystery might unravel. Just too many questions. Where is Tempy in 1810? Alsey and John have males Marks age, but due to DNA neither would have been his father. In 1820 Tempy shows up with sons Marks age. Also, Jesse has sons Marks age. Where in the world is Mark in 1830?

Again many thanks in helping with this ongoing puzzle.
Tony

Deloris, thanks for your input. If it is known that it is inaccurate it should be removed by Ancestry. This is not my direct line of research but, like yourself, we have to track all of the Richardsons to find the ones you're looking for.   Also, the original information that I copied is dated 2002.  A lot of things have changed since then! Much of my Richardson information comes from Louise Fuller of Nash County, who did a great manuscript on the Richardsons.  Do you have that?  There is also another Richardson site that may be of interest to you:  http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/3753999/;

One of the Elizabeth Rices was born abt 1846 and died after 1880. She was the daughter of John B. and Sally W. Rice and married 10/10/1866 to Josiah Haywood Strickland, son of Isaac Strickland and Elizabeth "Betsy" Jordan. This information came from their marriage license in Nash County.

Also in John Rice's will: Merritt should be Marriott and the name of one of the witnesses was Arundell.

Carla Tate

I just took another look at the database and its worse than I remembered. It is showing the children of Mark Richardson & Mary Ballantine(?) as being John Sr., Perry, Peter, Winifred, Elizabeth, Littleton, Sarah and Archibald Richardson. If the person posting that info had taken the time to actually even just look at the 1850 census, they would see how ludicrous that is. Peter, Winifred, Elizabeth,Sarah & Archibald Richardson are some of the children of Gideon & Peggy Richardson, Mulatto; Littleton Richardson, Mulatto, is the husband of Gideon's daughter, Olive. Perry Richardson, was White, married to Jerusha Denson, also White. I have no idea where they got the John Richardson, b.1830 wife Helen from.
The family of Gideon & Peggy Richardson were from Halifax Co.,NC, and only moved to Nash by 1850. I have extensive info on this family including wills, birth, marriage and death records, as well as census. If you want to know more about this family I have it posted in my tree, including all Sources:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Anybody taking anything seriously in the "Nash County Vital Records Abstracts" needs to be made aware that the database is absolutely useless and examples like this is primary proof of it.

Deloris
Hi Carla,

The short answer is I don't know. I too think there is one.

Complicating the process is the fact that there were 2 Edward Moore's.

I am working on determining their relationship.

The elder of the 2, usually called Esq. or Sr did witness my Edwards 1783 will along with Thos Carter and Hardy STRICKLAND naming his wife Elizabeth, his children James, Sarah Taylor, Judah Flowers, Mary, William, Elizabeth, Susannah, and Edward Moore. James Moore was Executor for his father and his mother Eliz (died 1789) Edward signed his will with his mark. Tho his older chilren were married records show that the younger girls either chose or had their mother named guardian. Edward the youngest son was 11 when his father died

Dau Elizabeth (No Hutchens I can find) married Noah Strickland before Sept 1791 When she was listed as Eliz Strickland
Son William Moore married Rahab Strickland , She was called Rahab Moore in Mark Stickland will.

Dau Sarah was PROBABLY married to Wilson Taylor

Feb Court 1791 Nash Co NC
Motion granted to Wilson Taylor on estate of his deced Wife, Sarah, who was
daughter of little Edward Moore deced and is appd guardian to her 6 children
(to wit):
Kinchen,
Eliza
Wilson
Edward
Sarah
Ford Taylor.
He enters bond of L200 for admr and L300 for guardianship with Drury Taylor
and Dempsy Barnes, Secy.

Tho I do think it off that he would have to be appointed guardian to his own children. No orignaljust extracts and OPR

Wilson Taylor(son of Arthur) is a link between the two Edwards.
The senior Edward with wife Mary wrote and signed his will in 1785. He requests "my loving friend" Wilson Taylor as Executor.
He does not name my Edward nor any of his children in the will. He does leave to son in law James Lee (married to his dau Berusheba) and to their children Moore Lee and Amy Lee and her husband Henry Horn. He mentions his daughter Zilpah and a granddaughter Milly daughter of his dau Milly Taylor.
and to grandson Christopher Moore Clinch and son in law
John Tanner 10 shillings

His dau Milly was married to and widowed by Edward Clinch in addition to Christopher she had a dau Hannah and son Horatio Gates Clinch.
Which Taylor did she marry? Could Wilson have married a dau of Each of the Edwards?

Some of this Edwards' land went for Sheriffs sale to satisfy a judgement for James Cain.Mark Stickland purchased some of this land.

Edward Moore and William Walker were called bro inlaw and named executors for the 1761 will of William Cane. Edward Moore was guardian for some of the minor children,

An Edward Moore was bondsman for the marriage of James Lee and Agnes Cade in 1760. This was the the father of son in law James Lee .

An Edward Moore was Sheriff in Edgecombe County.

An Edward Moore witnessed the 1753 will of Arthur Taylor along with Lazarus Pope and Gale Bryant.

Edgecombe Co Court records July 1766
Wilson TAYLOR, orphan of Arthur TAYLOR came into Court and chose John TAYLOR, his brother, as Guardian who was approved. He accordingly entered into Bond of £500 with Duncan LAMON & Edward MOORE, Securities.

April Court 1780, Nash co NC
Wilson Taylor appointed guardian to Christopher Taylor orphan of Arthur Taylor, deced. He entered into bond of L10000 with Edward Moore, Esrq and John Dew Esqr. (#382)

I am hesitant to put theory on line last time it took but a few months to become "fact"

I will try find more of the Strickland deed dealings. I have tried to give as many connecting names as I know.

Judy

JJudyJam@aol.com

HI
New info showing James Ricks of Edgecombe had a daughter Judith Ricks called Judith Moore in her fathers will. James Moore involved in the probate. I am pencilling them in a parents for Callum.
Edward Moored 1783 left property on Peach Tree Creek to his son James.
I believe this is the area that the Rogers family were in.
Judith Ricks Moore's maternal grandfather was Callum Ross.
Edward Moore is my line. I descend from sons William and Edward. Hoping this is the family for son James.
Judy
JJudyjam@aol.com

Hi,
Well it was new to me.
I had seen the Callum postings for years and was intrigued because of his dau Judith Ricks Moore being a Judy Moore myself for about 25 years.

I sent for and rec’d a few pages from the book.

The Descendants of Jonas Ricks and other Ricks Families in America by Donald M. Ricks ( pub 1998.)

Note I have not seen any of the original documents

And yes, Edgecombe. James Ricks wrote his will on 13 March 1792 and the probate process began just 2 months later in May Court 1792.

James Ricks married 3 times. His first was Judith Ross. She has not been seen much in the online genealogies. She apparently died between Dec 1760 when her fathers will was written and James Ricks 2nd marriage. His 2nd marriage was to Mary Crudup 23 July 1762 and 3rd to Phoebe Horn 29 Sept 1770 all in Edgecombe.

There is also the marriage of Robert Rodgers to Ann Woods 26 May 1764. They are Callum’s wife Ann’s parent I think.

Kallum/William ? Ross (will was written with one name and proved with the other.)wrote his will 8 December 1760 and was proved in December court. He left to wife Elizabeth, son Daniel and daughters Jude Ricks and Ann Ricks..
His daughter Ann was married to John Ricks, James’brother and son Daniel was married to their sister Sarah.

Judith Ricks had sibs Robert, Charity, and Mourning. Callum Moore. named children this as well as a Judith Ricks Moore. I love the name game.

There was another Moore connection. Ann Rodgers Moore list a granddaughter in her will, Charity Wood Flowers. This Charity was also the Grandaughter of Judith Moore (sister of James Moore and dau of Edward Moore d 1783) that married John Flowers. Their son Henry married Charity Moore.

If you will email me I can send you the pages from the Ricks book.

I feel quite confident that this is Callum’s mom. Now to make sure that my James is the right James for her husband. He is right time right place. No other James’around.
Still have much to research on this fella. He disappears but there are Moores in Anson with a James Rex (Ricks?)Moore, a Moses and a J Callum Moore that need to be looked at.

Judy JJudyJam@aol.com

I notice Charity Richardson only shows up in the 1820 census, one of 3 living there at the time which include Jessie & Tempie Richardson. Tempie was the daughter of William Richardson, who died in 1813, children as named in his will: Tempy, Numan, George, John, and Alsey Richardson. I don't know who this Jesse Richardson was, but he was younger than Charity & Tempie, so it is likely he was a son of one of them. In 1810, there was Alsey, John and William, and I believe that Charity may have been a wife of John, who I've seen listed as dying ca 1815 and I know some the others moved to Johnston Co.,NC.
William Richardson was married to Winnifred Jackson, daughter of George & Mary Jackson, (George left a 1795 will naming grandson Newman Richeson) and William & Winnifred had a daughter, Winnefred Richardson, who died in 1791 (as mentioned in a May 1791 court record where William Richardson was granted administration of the estate of Winifred Richardson, daughter of William Richardson, with Thomas Richardson & Stephen Webb security).
As for James Willis, I don't know how he fits in, but a James Willis is mentioned in the August Court 1789 records:
"On Motion of Thomas Whitfield at May Term last to be appd Guard to Wilson & James Willis orphans of the Thomas Willis which was approved by the Court & bonds being executed agreeable to Law. The order for the above Motion not being entered at that Court, on Motion of Wm Hall at this Term it was consult of the Court that the order be entered at this Term. Reference being made to the Bonds as aforesaid. "

Deloris

This is good to know, but I would be very careful of anything you find in the so-called "Nash County Vital Records Abstracts". That database has been the subject of discussion of numerous researchers because it is made up mostly of info that is totally bogus and even the so-called author has been proven to be bogus. The book that the database claims to have been the source of the info never existed; the same "author" also posted a similiar database for Edgecombe, with many of the very same names. Over the years, Ancestry has been asked to by many people in the genealogical community to remove the database because it give so much incorrect info, but the only thing they did do is add a disclaimer. There may be some true info there, but in those cases, it appears they used info from various family trees and it is hit or miss as to whether that may be correct.
A lot of info on many Richardsons in that database is incorrect, they have couples married to the wrong people in many cases, and it is obvious some of the things were copied directly from a census page, so anyone using that database should be cautioned to thoroughly research further.
I can believe some of the Thomas Richardson info because there are entries in the Nash Co. Court & Deed books that link Thomas to a William (s/o James, d.1787, wife Elizabeth)and William to Randolph (s/o James, d.1787) and William Richardson Jr.
As I have said, this is not a line a I am specifically researching, but I try to find out a little something about the RICHARDSONs in the area to keep them from being confused with the families I am researching. This is info that the other 2 people posting on this thread would be thrilled to know, and perhaps they might want to verify it by contacting the person you suggested.

Thanks for posting your response on this, it really helps.

Deloris
I'm sorry but I don't know who Reddin Richardson was married to.
William Richardson appears to have been living in Nash Co, prior to Johnston, there are entries for a Jr. and Sr. in Nash Co. as early as the 1790s, with William Richardson Sr. dying in 1813. As I mentioned to Tony in earlier messages in this thread, William Richardson Sr. was married to a daughter of George Jackson, named Winnefred, but there is nothing to indicate whether William Jr. was related to the Sr. since he was not listed in the 1813 will; however, I see at least one Court Record in 1793 with both names:
"Nash County, North Carolina, County Court Minutes, 1787-1793"- August Court 1793
#1446-A Deed of Sale from Henry BRASWELL to William RICHARDSON Junr & proved by the Oath of William RICHARDSON Senr.

But with Reddin, Needham (possibly same person as Numan?)and Mark Richardson all turning up in Johnston Co. by 1830 about the same age and living almost next to one another, points to some kind of relationship, and with a William Richardson (Jr.)& Reddin Richardson appearing together in the John Rice will, it seems they were probably related.
Here's one other entry from the Nash Co. will abstracts that may or may not help both you and Tony:

LAZARUS POPE - 16 Oct 1789 - Nov Ct 17889
"Sick and Weake of body"
5 pounds specie each to: Brother ARTHUR POPE, RICHARD POPE, ARTHUR POPE JR. WINEY JACKSON RICHARDSON -negro girl Juner, bed & furniture. Wife BARBERY POPE - 190 joining PHILLANDER WILLIAMS; also 220 acres joining JOHN DEW & DRURY TAYLOR; Aaron, Phebe, Jinney, Isaac, Jeremiah, Archibald; remainder of my estate.
Ex: wife BARBARA POPE
Wit: PHILLANDER WILLIAMS, DRURY TAYLOR, ABSALOM WILLS.

Winnie Jackson Richardson was the dau/of George & Mary Jackson, and the wife of William Richardson Sr. I notice a Jesse Pope living with Reddin Richardson in 1850, but I don't know the relationship, perhaps there is something either of you may know.

Deloris
Yes, these Message Boards can be very fickle, it wouldn't even let me post some replies this morning. One of the things I do though, is to add Message Boards that I am interested in to the "My Alerts" List, which Ancestry/Rootsweb will send a daily digest of new message listings posted to each of those Boards, that way I can see any responses as well as click onto any messages that I may be interested in.
The Temperance Richardson who married Charles Lynch in 1827 Halifax Co., was a free person of color; I believe she was probably a daughter of Benjamin Richardson, d. 1809, Halifax Co. Charles Lynch was married 3 times, and Temperance was his 2nd wife, as further proof, in the 1830 Halifax Co. Census, Charles Lynch, FCP,(oldest female 36-55) was listed on the same page with the bondsman to the 1827 marriage, William Carroll, who was white, and they were living next to the many Richardsons who were FCP. They were apparently divorced by 1840, though, because Temperance Linch,FCP, age 55-100, was head of household in Halifax Co. living amongst the children of Benjamin Richardson (Charles Lynch wasn't in that census that I can find); Charles Lynch remarried again in 1844 to Mary Polly Scott in Halifax and the family was in Granville Co. by 1850, but returned to Halifax again in 1860. So, I pretty much know who that family was.
I haven't seen anything showing a marriage for any other Temperance Richardson, so she may very well have been unmarried when she had children.
Here is the entry I mentioned in the Nash Co., will abstracts:
JOHN RICE - 29 Apr 1836 - Nov. Ct 1840
BENJAMIN CARTER- certain property. HOPKINS RICE & WILLIAM RICHARDSON - in trust after the death of my wife ELIZABETH, I share during the life of my daughter NANCY CARPENTER, with reversion to her children. After my wife's death, certain properties to: WILLIAM RICHARDSON, HOPKINS RICE, REDIN RICHARDSON, WILLIAM EARPPE, JOHN RICE. Son WILLIAM RICE - certain property after my wife's death; also 800 acres where I now live with reversion to his son RICHARDSON RICE or any child(ren) he may have by another wife (WM. RICE dec'd noted here). Grandson JOHN LEONARD (a minor) - I share, after my wife's death. BENJAMIN RICE - certain property, $300, 1 share after my wife's death to his children JOHN, NICHOLSON, B. BOYAKIN RICE & the heirs of JINCY STRICKLAND (who are to have 1/4 of the share). Wife ELIZABETH - all my property during her life, & then divided as above.
Ex. BENJAMIN MERRITT, JOHN RICE
Wit: WM. M.B. AUNDELL, BOYKIN DENTON, HOPNI(x)PUCKET
Note attached: Probatd Aug. Ct 1837 but not recorded until date above.

Thought, could this be where the "B" (BOYKIN) comes from in your family? Was William RICE married to a RICHARDSON? Was William RICHARDSON married to a RICE?

Deloris
Have you ever figured out who was Reddin Richardson's father? As info which may or may not help, I've seen others with the first name of "Reddin" also called "Redmond","Robbin" or "Robert". Also, since both Tempie and Charity had younger children in their household in 1820, I'd take a closer look at their census. Charity only had females, the youngest b. 1804-10. Tempy had only males, 2 b. 1804-10, 1 b. 1794-1804, while she was over 45. I would think it more likely that Tempy was the mother of sons the age that I notice Mark Richardson was. I see in 1850 Johnston Co., that Mark, Needham (Newman?) and Reddin Richardson were all born 1805, all living near one another, but I have no idea of what their relationships were to one another. Tempy was apparently the unmarried daughter of William & Winnifred (Jackson) Richardson, so any children would be illegitimate. As I mentioned, perhaps Charity was the widow of John Richardson, or at least one of the earlier Richardson men, but I don't know what her relationship would have been with James Willis.
I'm sure you've seen the will of John RICE, d.1837 Nash Co., where he mentioned William & Redin RICHARDSON, and he had a grandson named Richardson RICE, if you haven't let me know and I'll quote it. These aren't any of the families I've researched, but I've seen them in the Nash Co. records to know a little about them.

Deloris
Litaker / Laidacker / etc. DNA Project

Seeking DNA test participants. We are trying to establish genealogy links to the Litaker family. This surname is spelled a variety of ways including, but not limited to:

Litaker
Lidaker
Leidaker
Leideker
Leidecker
Laidacker
Laidaker

The 1790 Federal Census shows members of this family were living in Rowan and Mecklenburg Counties but members could have settled anywhere in North Carolina. Research leads us to believe members of this family were in Pennsylvania prior to North Carolina. However, there seems to be a horrible lack of documentation to prove ancestry – thus the DNA project. If the DNA matches, we will know we are on the right track. If it does not match, they we will know to look in other directions.

We hope to find male Litakers (and other similiar spellings) to take the Y-DNA67 test. We are using Family Tree DNA (www.FamilyTreeDNA) for the project.

If you would like more information about this new DNA project, please contact me.

Linda Allred Cooper
lacooper@mindspring.com
As I said in my previous post Mary (Polly)Hawks, Rhoda's Hawks' sister, is my second great grandmother. My sister and I have searched many years and not found out much about the Hawks line. John Hawks was born about 1750 in Virginia. He died in Nash Co. in Apr 1850 and is listed in the 1850 Census mortality schedules. He is NOT the famous John Hawks associated with Tryon Palace. Guy Baker has done some good research which can be found on his pages "Haight, Horton, Hicks." John Hawks' wife was Tempie, maiden name unknown. I at one time thought she was a Ricks, but no longer believe so. Ruth McNinch suggests she might have been Temperance Whitfield. Guy Baker suggests she might have been Temperance Braswell Hunt.

Tempy and Rhoda Hawks are in Nash Co. in the 1850 Census. Tempy Hawks appears in other families in the 1860 Census with the William J. B. Harper family and in the 1870 Census with the Folansbees, both in Nash Co. She is always listed as born in NC and usually as unable to read or write. Helen Sharpe has some information on Rhoda posted on her tree on rootsweb. Guy Baker has Bennett Crumpler's Civil War service record on his web site. I had looked again yesterday and cannot connect Bennett with any other Crumplers. He is about the same age as Benajah Crumpler, but they appear to be two different individuals, since both have military service records.

I'm sorry not to be of more help to you. I would love to hear if you discover anymore about these people as I too am searching for them.

Nancy Smth

(I believe that they were sons of John Strickland, born in Isle of Wight Co. VA.) Edward Moore's daughter Elizabeth Hutchens Moore married Noah Strickland, cousin to Simon and Lazarus.

I believe that Edward Moore might have been an older half-brother to Simon and Lazarus or that there was some earlier familial connection to the Stricklands, but I would like to know what it is.

Go to "Nash County, North Carolina Vital Records Abstracts" in your browser. If you type in "Mark Richardson" you will get that he was born in 1806, to Thomas Richardson and Sarah. Sarah was actually Sarah Manning Eason, who was first md to William Eason, they had a dau. Mary Eason, then he died before age 30. Sarah then md. Thomas Richardson. This Thomas had one of the original Granville Grants, and Clois Richardson has quite a bit if data on this line. There was a son, Thomas, as well, and we believe he is the one who migrated to Cheraws, Darlington Dist, SC. Sarah was the dau. of Margaret and Mathias Manning. A lot of history on them is online.

This database also has the parents of Redden Richardson as John Richardson and Elizabeth Rice. However, I have been told that there were two Elizabeth Rices. A mother and dau. which has been very confusing to everyone. The above mentioned database also has Redden Richardson's parents as John Richardson and Elizabeth Rice. The information on this database was compiled in 1909.

Doug, I was just looking at Joseph Henry's death certificate and noticed that the burial place is called "Horn's Cemetery" in Nash, Co. I didn't see any Horns on the Monroe Boykin survey list. Have you heard of Horn's Cemetery before? Maybe the land was once owned by Horn.

I know where this cemetery is. It's the Stallings/Crumpler family cemetery in Nash county. It's mostly overgrown and forgoten in teh middle of a field. My grandmother's infant sister who died of spanish flu is burried there as well as her grandparents and I think possibly great grandparents. My mother took me out to show me where it is as my grandmother used to take her there. I am working on trying to figure out who owns the land and requesting regular access to clean it up, fence it in, and repair crumbling headstones. We had to walk through the field to get to it. Anybody needing information on this contact me.

I know that one of John Rice's daughters, Elizabeth, married a William Richardson of Johnson County and they moved to Greene County, Ala. I have wondered if Reddin married one of Elizabeth's sisters? Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you! I am grasping at straws in trying to decipher my direct Richardson ancestry. I can not determine the parents of Mark Richardson born 1805 in Nash Co. I even had my uncle's, who is direct male descendant from Mark, paternal DNA tested. No Richardson matches!! The nearest match was an Ian Fauld 5 generations removed. He never responded to my inquiry. This has led me to believe that Mark must have been born out of wedlock. According to court records, Charity had James Willis in the Nash Co. court system in May 1807, Aug 1807 and again in Feb. 1810. All related to children born out of wedlock. That is where my interest in Charity lies. We also have carried the surname of Willis as a middle name for generations. No one knows the origin. Another reason for interst in Charity and James. My uncle had several Willis' show up on his matches, but they were way removed-like 600 years. I think this may be a lost cause.
Mark appeared in the Johnston Co. NC court system for Reddin Richardson. Have never been able to establish a family link between these two.
Thank you for your additional info. The service did not let me know you had responded. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Have not seen the will of John Rice. Also, have seen a record listing Redden Richardson's father as being Johnathan. I wonder if this could be the John listed as the son of William Richardson. This would make Tempy Richarson Redden's aunt. I think all the records concerning Charity were for female children. So this may lead to a better chance of Tempy being the mother of Mark. This would make Mark and Redden first cousins. Tempy, as you mentioned, had two males close to Marks age living with her in 1820. In 1830 Mark had living with him an older male, very near his age. I wonder if this could have been a brother. We've never been able to identify this male. Another interesting clue to Mark's identity is the middle initial B. His oldest son William also carried the B, but we have never been able to figure out the name it represents. I've looked at Tempy several times and tried to figure out if she might be the missing link. May never know. Did she finally marry? I see a marriage record for one Temperance Richardson to Charles Lynch in 1827. Right now she looks to be a better candidate for Marks mother that Charity. Since it's obvious Mark was born out of wedlock (due to DNA evidence) it must have been one of the two.
Tony

Anyone have information on Charity Richardson? She had James Willis in the Nash Co. court system during the early 1800s. Particularly interested in knowing if she had a son.

Benjamin Harrison

I am looking for any information on Benjamin Harrison who was born about 1770 either in Virginia or Nash County, North Carolina. He was the son of John and Ann Harrison. Benjamin was deceased before the 1827 will of his father John Harrison. John Harrison's will declares that Benjamin was deceased and named his children, Sampson D., John, and Elizabeth. Searching for any information on Benjamin's children and especially who Benjamin Harrison married or where he is buried. Any help appreciated. Shirley Roach King
