Hi Marie
I see why I didn't find him when I searched findagrave, his name is misspelled. It should actually read Scrivner! His family name and service record are the other spelling. I will get hi biography updated through findagrave. Thank you very much for helping me find this fallen soldier on the sacred holiday! I thought this was where he should have been, figured the national cemetery was started around the hospital grounds of Camp Jackson.
Don

There is a Sgt. J.W. Scrivener headstone in the Wilmington National Cemetery near Market & 17th Sts. The photo is located on Findagrave.com with the spelling mentioned above. The location: Plot 5, No 1404. Evidently, the burials were renumbered at a later date. The Find A Grave Memorial No is 3271512. John Evans took the photo of the headstone. Hope this is your find.
John Wesley Scrivner

SGT Scrivner was a Union Civil War veteran who passed away after being a POW at the Union Army hospital at Camp Jackson, Wilmington, NC. He rode with Co E, 4th Kentucky Infratry, Mounted from Oct 1861 until he was captured during the Battle of ATlanta on 30 July 1864. He was held at Camp Florence, SC and parolled in Feb 1865. I am looking for his burial site, I do know he was buried in grave 32 in row 1 of what looks like it might be a city cemetery, but can't make out the rest of the writing. He should have a military headstone. I have searched findagrave and the National Cemeteries with no luck. I am sure he is buried in the Willmington area. He is not with his family in Kentucky. He also had a brother William M Scrivner who rode with him and was killed on 4 Aug 1862 in Alabama.
Thanks
Don

Yes, I did, THANK YOU for asking! I neglected to write in my notes how/where I obtained it, but I *think* I got lucky and found a bunch of New Hanover newspapers online. I can dig though my stuff here and see.

I originally needed 20 obits, I'm down to 3-- it really amazes me how the ease/difficulty of obtaining obits changes so much from city to city!

Were you able to get the obits you wanted from Wilmington? I found out that Beverly Tetterton has retired but stops by occassionally. Joe Shepherd is still there and a new person named Amanda. I have some other names who do volunteer searches. I usually send a donation to the NC Room of the Public Library if they pull any obits off microfilm for me. I'm finding a lot of the public libraries are sending obits/death notices via email..saving postage.

Do you know about this website? www.onhgs.org. When the site opens, click on links, and it will come up with New Hanover County, NC vital records..then chose between births, marriages, deaths and sometimes you can find other things like real estate dealings, etc.

If you need copies of the actual certificate, the Register of Deeds is next door and you can send for a copy of documents for a fee. It's on 2nd. street..you can google their address and phone#

I'm looking for any infomation on Owen Johnson (born 1807, NC) and spouse Rebecca (born 1805, NC). According to the 1850 Fed census they lived in New Hanover Co, NC with their eleven children. According to 1860 Fed census mortality sched. Owen Johnson died in March 1860 in Dale Co, Al.Census records show Rebecca Johnson and younger children were residing in Clopton, Dale Co, Al in 1860. I'm wondering if some of their older children, Mary A, John T., Betsy J, etc. stayed in NC. Are their ancestors still there? What was Rebecca's maiden name? Who were Owen and Rebecca's parents??

Thanks, yes, now I remember.

If you'll email my business address, dena@denawhite.com, I'll send you the bit of information I've put together on the Whites/Browns. I don't want to post it publicly because it's a work in progress, and I don't want to put out misinformation that could get misquoted in various genealogies multiple times for decades to come.

Yes, probably any Whites you run across associated with the Kemps are the John White / Mary Jones line. His daughter Jane married Joseph Kemp. Right now, I'd say that probably any Whites on the northwest side of the river, near Jones Creek, Ellis Creek, Panther Branch, Little Brompton and many at/near Elizabethtown are John White / Mary Jones relatives.

Right now, I'm not sure about the rest. I've identified at least three daughters of William White and Margaret of New Hanover. At first I thought William Jr. might have died without descendants, but I've stumbled onto a couple of things recently that may be changing my mind. And I'm also starting to think William and Margaret probably had other children, as well. Almost certainly this batch of Whites is related to the Donohos, given that William sold his piece of land near Donoho Creek to William Bartram in the 1730s and we see them showing up together in wills.

In addition to the Whites near Elizabethtown, there were Whites near Hammonds Creek, a few miles below Elizabethtown; Whites near Lake Waccamaw and White Marsh, which would probably now be in Columbus County; and Whites near Browns Creek (which may have been named for George Brown's family, not sure yet); and my Whites near Bryan's Swamp. With so few surviving records, it's a bit of a puzzle figuring out how they fit together, if they do, but I'm making some headway.

I've been compiling chronological charts on all the Whites in Bladen / New Hanover in the 1700s, trying to disambiguate where I can. Slow work.

Remember to send me an email.

Thanks,
Dena

Yes, I posted the land transaction for Mary "White" Winslow, 13 JAN 1788, Cumberland Co.,NC. in my query 19 JAN 2012 in this forum. Mary White Winslow daughter of John White and Ann Donoho. Ann Donoho daughter of Daniel Donoho.

Researching for John and Ann White has been difficult so far. I think the info I run across is for your John White and Mary Jones in Bladen Co. area?? The "Kemp" surname.

I have run across some references to a John White in todays Robeson Co. NC. in the mid 1700s. Researching this area of Rennert and Red Springs where you shared info of Somserset Donaho selling land near Pughs Marsh in the 1770s. The Oxendine name comes up too. Does your John and Mary have connects to the Oxendine family in this area? Yes, I am confused, really not sure what John White I am researching?

John Donahue, wit. 15 July 1756 is a good year for me as far as John Donahos go. I think that I can figure this John is possibly 20 years old at least at this time??? Looking for that John Donaho born around 1705.

Farquharson, Ferguson,is a big surname for me. Seem to have a strong connect for my Donaho research in the 1700s. John Davis and Jr. in particular and the Davis and Brown name is common in the areas of my Donaho research. Moore as well as other surnames from this area of New Hanover Co.
Do you recall what your source of information was for the John White and Ann Donoho marriage?

Also, I may not have posted this previously:

Page 209. Will of Cosmos Farquharson, Doctor
of Physic, of Wilmington, dated July 15, 1756.
Proved August 1756. "I order and ordain that my Body shall be
buried without a coffin". . . "I desire that no form
of prayer or ceremony be read over me."
Wit: Mary Moore, James Murray, John
Donahue.

The Farquharsons (Cosmos or Cosmas, Alexander and Charles) are also connected to the Whites in several documents in New Hanover and Craven Counties. And it would seem here, also connected to the Donohos.

Sorry I haven't run across anymore info on Ann Donoho and John White. I really should try harder on this. I have assumed they lived somewhere in the Donoho Creek area of the Northwest Branch? Haven't found Daniel's Will filing either? Boy, I think that would be something if I could find a copy of Daniel's Will.

Several of my early Donaho families had strong ties to the Anabaptist "Baptist" faith. Quite a few Irish who left Ireland after 1650, were of the AnaBaptist faith.
William Screven was a very prolific Anabaptist establishing Baptist churches in all of the new settlements from New Hampshire to Charles Town, SC. The Charles Town Association was headed up by a William White for a time around 1700 who seemed to be connected with William Screven. William White was connected to the Baptists along the Cooper and Ashley Rivers.

Since I do have a Y-DNA match to John Donaho, b. 1706-1781. John was a Loyalist killed in 1781 at Ninety-Six District,SC. I have been researching the Loyalists in this area. I have found a William Donaho from Edgefield, County, SC. who was also a Loyalist in this area during 1780 serving with a William WHITE, Loyalist of Ninety-Six District. I believe this William White was married to a Susannah. From some info I found this William White came from Anson County, NC.
It is interesting that I seem to find White family members near my Donahos in these areas? Just coincedence?

Oh yes I think that there were Donahos who came from Ireland via England and Barbados after James and Priscilla Donaho landed in Charles Town in 1670.In the years 1670-1700. I think that is why my DNA matches Donahos in Virginia and possibly Maryland. Donahos migrating from Barbados at this time.

David Donahoe received a land grant in New Brunswick, NC. in 1727. I am sure that David had ties to Daniel and John Donaho in the New Hanover,,Bladen County area. I haven't made a "direct" connection for these Donaho's to James 1670, John 1677 in Charles Town, SC. Somehow I think that they do, but I did run across this....

Barbados Census 1679/1680.
"The names of ye children baptized in ye parish of St. Thomas in ye island of Barbados in ye years 1678; December 25th, Oneale; ye son of David Dunnohoh." Omitted chapters from Hotten's, Brandow pub., Baltimore, 1983, page 64. Not sure if this is the same David Donaho but I think it shows the possibility of several migrations like you pointed out.

Y-DNA, since I have received my results for my DNA and have begun to interpret them.(somewhat)Lol. I have seen a pattern develop too. It makes me believe that I am searching in the right areas because some family names in the areas of these Donaho family members have matching DNA markers?
My DNA matches an, "Amlaib Mor Ua Donnchadha", Aghadoe, Killarney, d. 1158.

Well, I think I made a connection through DNA, as well. A family of Whites in Iredell County, NC, in the 1800s appear to be a Y-DNA match. I just figured that at some point we'd find a missing link in the late 1700s between the Bladen and Iredell Whites, but when I glanced at the census records there, it appears that family immigrated from Ireland in the late 1700s, whereas my Whites were in New Hanover and Bladen by at least the 1730s. One ancestry chart says that family is from County Antrim or County Down, and that's where several of the Bladen / New Hanover families associated with the Whites appear to have originated, as well. FTDNA predicts we'd have a match in about the late 1600s or early 1700s, if I'm reading things correctly, so that probably should be the next place I look.

So that was a big help. Wherever I've looked, so far, in NC, SC, and VA, I find a LOT of Whites with similar names, but so far none who are missing my particular combination. I wouldn't be surprised to find that the 1730s Bladen County Whites were first-generation Americans.

So maybe your Donohos are similar...with some family members migrating separately to various locations in different generations.

Can you tell me anything more about Ann Donoho and John White, such as birth dates and where they lived, where her father Daniel's will was filed, etc. I'm preparing time charts on the Whites in the area, and it would be helpful to know whether there was another adult John White in Bladen the same time as mine.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you for sharing the Clarendon Courier. Great info!Need to go through it line by line. I just found another clue to the puzzle a recent DNA match to a John DONAHO b. 1706 and died in the Old 96 District,South Carolina in 1781. Needless to say it is some what of a surprise to me that John was in the 96 District??? Lots of Donaho's located in the Laurens, Edgefield County, South Carolina area but I have never been able to connect my Donahos to these Donaho's at all,....... "for now"
It almost seems if there are two or more Donaho lines going on here???? To many John Donahos to sort out. Thank you!

Wow, yes they sure are useful. "Pughs Little Marsh" In today's Robeson County. It is great to see that Somerset Donaho has a connection to this area.
About 8 years ago I was researching this area a place called DUNAHOE BAY near Red Springs and Rennert. Never did find a Donaho who might be connected to this area. Somerset!!!

A Michael Dunnahoe entered a claim for 100 acres in Richmond County,NC between Leaths Creek and Gum Swamp around 1779-1780.

Mikel Dunaho married Sarah Barnes 3 MAR 1803 in Richmond Co. NC.
Lots of Barnes families in this area of Pughs Little Marsh.I was sure that Michael and Sarah had connections to this area.

OMG!!! John Johnson Jr. It is great to see a Johnson connection here. My 5g great-grandfather James Donaho married Delilah Johnson, b. 1764, Richmond County, NC. I don't think that I have run across such a strong Johnson family possibility. Wow!!

I can see a better connection to the Donaho/Donoho Plantation and Donaho/Donoho Bay in Marlboro County, SC. now. Thank you!

You are a excellent researcher! Yes, from the way things look I think that we are probably related somehow!

I have been researching on the premise that there were a group of Donaho/Donohos that had migrated to Barbados from Ireland between 1645-1680.

I think that there are Donaho/Donohos who migrated to America before 1700,some landing in Maryland and possibly some could have landed in Virginia,(Nansemond, James River)

There are Donahos/Donohos who are said to have migrated from Maryland to Virginia to North Carolina. Orange, Caswell Counties.
In Caswell County, NC. there are a few Donaho/Donaho families. Charles, William, and Major Thomas Donaho.

These Donaho families also migrate to Sumner, Smith and Trousdale Counties of Tennessee. William Donoho and his wife Jennie Jenkins settle on Defeated Creek TN. around 1784-86.
My 5g great-grandfather is Ephriam Peyton, b. 1755, Amherst,Co. VA.
Ephraim Peyton and his wife Elizabeth Jennings were members of the Robertson Donelson Party that settled on the Cumberland River near today's Nashville.

Defeated Creek was named for an incedent Ephraim and his twin John and brother Thomas Peyton had with the Indians in 1784. Interesting connection to Donahos from a side of my family tree!

My James Donaho migrated to Warren County, KY. in 1800 on the Gasper River near the Barren River. James Donaho was so close to these Donahos in Tennessee,so many Donaho/Donohos in this area of Tennessee but I could not make a connection to them or back to the Caswell County, NC. Donahos/Donohos.

My Y-DNA test came back in March. Seems my DNA matches people who have descendants from Smith County, TN.????

It seems that there are so many similarities between the South Carolina and Cape Fear River Donahos/Donohos to the Maryland, Virginia, Caswell Co. NC. Donahos/Donohos??

I am beginning to wonder if there was not some sort of direct connection from the Cape Fear River Donahos/Donohos right up to the northern area of North Carolina in the mid 1700s too?

There is a whole other group of Donahos who landed near the James River in Virginia around 1743. A group of Donaho brothers. A part of the group a, John, William and a Thomas migrated south to the Cumberland County, NC. area in 1758.

This John Donaho migrated from the Cumberland County, NC. area in 1767 to Laurens County, SC. Trying to figure out this over lapping of Donaho's in Cumberland County, NC. in the mid 1700s???

I know from your information that there were Donaho's in this area of Bladen, Cumberland and Anson Counties before and after the arrival of these Donahos in 1758 to Cumberland County, NC. area.

Thanks so much for your interest. You might be able to solve this for me! LOL! I knew, I was talking to the right person! Thank you!

Are the Bladen Donohos connected to the Summerset County, Maryland, Donohoes? The names are suspiciously similar.

http://www.goldenlyon.com/donoho.html

Thank you for the info. I think I am following your post!
Yes, the Fargurharson, name especially Cosmas has shown up quite a bit in these records. Going to have to look into the "Fargurharson" family.
Davis, Swann, Moseley, Ashe,Jones, most of all of these records are made with people of, "The family".

David Donahoe I know comes from Charles Towne, SC.
I think it is interesting that David gets his land grant from the Lords Proprietors in 1727 as well as John Baptista Ashe does. It seems the timing of this is about the final ousting of the Tuscararo Indians from this area?

"A land grant of 600 acres of land on the Northwest Branch of the Cape Fear River was made to David Donahoe on May 19, 1727."

I know that Daniel Donoho must be connected to David Donahoe some how?

"1788, Mary Winslow of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, NC. to Thomas Brown, where as Ann Donoho on December 1730 by Will of her father Daniel Donoho became possessed of certain tract land on the "SW. Side" of the Northwest River and the said Ann Donoho did intermarry John White. Son of John and Ann, Joseph White became heir to the land and he bequeathed it to his sister Mary Winslow."

This is where it gets interesting," the will states...."being part of 800 acres patented by said "DANIEL DONOHO, MAY 19 1727" and adjoining a 30 acre tract sold by the said Donoho to John B. Ashe including the mouth of Donoho Creek."

David Donahoe, 600 acres on the Northwest Branch, May 19, 1727,
Daniel Donoho, 800 acres on the SW Side of the Northwest Branch, May 19, 1727.

From John Baptista Ashe's Will, Bath Co. NC. Nov. 2, 1731, Nov. 15, 1734.
deeds lands to family, sons and brothers,
"lands up on the Northwest Branch of Cape Fear River called "Ashwood" situated between the lands of John Porter a Virginia Merchant, "and the plantation whereon Daniel Donaho now lives."

I believe I can tie Sommerset Donaho to this area of the Northwest Branch

Summers H. Donahoe, Bladen Co. NC. Census, 1763

Grant, Patience, died natural death inquest held in Bladen Co. 13 OCT 1760, William BARTRAM, corner filed the inquisition which was held before Thomas Finney, Justice, Jury Thomas, Odom, Wm. Moor, John Moor, John Jarvis, "SOMERSET DONAHO", Daniel Read, Thomas Platt, Daneil Willis, Michael Odom.

Now with your additional info for William Donaho in Bladen County, NC. 1771, 1772 Tax lists it is becoming a little bit clearer ,but brings up more questions??? lol.

Still trying to figure out John Donaho/Donoho of New Hanover Co.????
Thanks so much for sharing, taking the time and feeding my fire with such wonderful info!

Another DONAHOE SIGHTING:

Lawrence Lee described the progress of settlement in The Lower Cape Fear in Colonial Days: “As late as the winter of 1724-25, according to General Burrington who was there, the Cape Fear region was uninhabited. Sometime between then and the spring of 1726, the settlement had begun. The earliest known resident was Maurice Moore, who was there on 30 April, 1726. It is unlikely that Moore was there alone, but the number and identity of his neighbors are not known. By the end of June, 1726, Moore had laid out Brunswick Town in the new settlement and had sold the first Lot.” 3

“Because many of the small groups were related by blood or marriage, they became known as the family. In addition to Maurice and Roger Moore and their brother, Nathaniel, the recipients readily identified as members of the group were Eleazar Allen, John Porter, Edward Moseley, John Baptista Ashe, Samuel Swann, John Swann, John Davis, John Grange, Edward Hyrne, Thomas Jones, Edward Smith, and Mosely Vail.” 3

The earliest recorded land grants were made under the Lords Proprietors in 1727. DAVID DONOHOE and John Baptista Ashe received grants in 1727. Richard Singletary received a grant in 1728. 1

http://www.ncgenweb.us/bladen/bladen-county-ncgenweb

I just stumbled across a couple more things.

William White, the millwright, who died about 1743, and his wife Margaret had a son named William.

In 1757 he left a will and power of attorney to his mother in New Hanover County. Col Thomas Brown, apparently the grandson of Margaret White, then filed the will in court in January 1784 (could be 1764, but I think 84).

In the elder William's will, he said that he wanted his wife Margaret to take the children and move northward to any of His Majesty's plantations.

I think they went to Craven County, which is where Euphemia later shows up married to a Dewey. I found this tonight.

John Devis, Newberne, in Craven County, 1754
John Freeman, Ann Nelson, John Starkey, Mary Wigmore, Richard Lyon. Witnesses: Euphemia White, Richard Lyon, Charles Farquarson

I think the Lyon family intermarried with Gov. Matthew Rowan's famil. The Farguarsons were in the same neighborhoods, New Hanover, Bladen and Cumberland counties.

ot sure if this is the same William, but the Farguharson connection might be a clue:

http://www.ncgenweb.us/newhanover/deed2.html
JULY 15, 1756 Will of Cosmas FARGUHARSON of Town of Wilmington Doctor of Physick being very sick..Appt Margaret MOORE of Cape Fear spinster sole heir & Exec...to my apprentice William WHITE 30 lbs...to Dr. Samuel GREEN, Alexr. FARGUHSON & John DAVIS JR sum of 13 lbs 6 shillings & 8 pence each...my mother 20 lbs..
Wit: Mary P. MORRIS, Ja. MURRAY, Margt.(M.D.) DONAHOE (bhm) Reg Aug Ct 1756 P.209

Hope that offers a new clue or two.

I'm glad I could help out. As I continue to research the Whites of the Cape Fear region, I'll keep the Donoho name in mind and let you know if I spot anything.

I appreciate the information you gave too, as it helped me identify who the widow Ann's husband was and to be alert to the existence of another John White in Bladen at the time of John White / Mary Jones.

Thank you so much for your help.
Elwell's Ferry and Donoho Creek and close to Thomas Brown's Plantation. Fantastic! This is great to see a William Donoho was their around 1771-1772. Yes!
A family cousin said their family tradition passed down through the generations said that James Donaho, born 1762's father was a William!

Yes I have seen the Buie name in the Old Cheraw area of the Pee Dee as well as most of the rest. Duncan, Campbell.
Thanks again for all of your suggestions and sharing your info with me.

Let me know if George White of the First Fleet to Charles Town connects al all.
