Frank Odom was named Franklin W. S. Odom and he was
married 3 times in Northampton Co., NC. His brothers were
Emery Preston Odom who lived and died near Severn, NC and John Henry Odom who lived and died near Conway, NC.
They had a half sister whose father is unknown to me. The 3 boys' mother was Mary(Polly) Odom b. ca 1828 and d.ca 1903 in Northampton County, NC. The father was Etheldred Garris who died in 1862. Evidently Mary Odom and Etheldred Garris did not get married. He did provide support for them in his will. I am trying to figure out Mary Odoms parents. I believe her father is Isham Odom who died about 1848. I would like to know more about Franklin Odom and his family.

Litaker / Laidacker / etc. DNA Project

Seeking DNA test participants. We are trying to establish genealogy links to the Litaker family. This surname is spelled a variety of ways including, but not limited to:

Litaker
Lidaker
Leidaker
Leideker
Leidecker
Laidacker
Laidaker

The 1790 Federal Census shows members of this family were living in Rowan and Mecklenburg Counties but members could have settled anywhere in North Carolina. Research leads us to believe members of this family were in Pennsylvania prior to North Carolina. However, there seems to be a horrible lack of documentation to prove ancestry – thus the DNA project. If the DNA matches, we will know we are on the right track. If it does not match, they we will know to look in other directions.

We hope to find male Litakers (and other similiar spellings) to take the Y-DNA67 test. We are using Family Tree DNA (www.FamilyTreeDNA) for the project.

If you would like more information about this new DNA project, please contact me.

Linda Allred Cooper
lacooper@mindspring.com
Emily Kee was born 3/27/1858 in Gumberry, Northampton County, NC to Ely Kee and Phillis Harding Kee. She married William Thomas Lockhart (born in 1849, Pleasant Hill, NC) on 12/01/1875 at her house. I have a record of 10 children born to William and Emily: Thomas Emery, Willie (female), Manna, Golena, Christine, Evanglist Martin (my grandfather), Grover Cleveland, Mary Ellen, James Garfield, and one whose name was not listed in the 1880 US Census, but born in 1880. Emily's death certificate shows that she died 12/11/1915. Emily and William Thomas owned a lot of land but they sold it in the late 1800's and early 1900's. I have copies of the deeds of sale but they are not good copies. I'm trying to find out how Emily originally got the land (it was her land) not her husband's.

Mariah appears to be the dau. of Burton or Buxton ALLEN (c.1795-bef.1840) by his first wife, whose name may have been Elizabeth BRROOKS (c.1795-bef. 1824). Burton m. (2) 7 May 1824 in Northampton to Sarah "Sally" LASSITER.

The family isn't well documented, and it's difficult looking at the 1820 and 1830 Census sheets to tell who's a Burton sibling and who's a Burton child. The widow Sarah ALLEN was enum. 1840 and 1850, and in the latter year you can learn the names of some of HER children by Burton, but Mariah is long gone by then. It may be that Mariah was an only child.

Burton ALLEN was the son of John and Tabitha ALLEN. I cannot identify the parents of Elizabeth BROOKS.

Mariah's first husband was the son of William UNDERWOOD, but I can't put a given name to him or find a date for their marriage.

Her second husband was John DAUGHERTY Jr. (c.1810), the son of another John DAUGHERTY (Sr.) who came to Northampton from Southampton Co. VA in the 1820s. They are not part of the DAUGHTREY family (T before R), which is the actual focus of my research.

I'll be glad to share sources and notes in the form of a gedcom file. Please specify which software you use. And feel free to contact me directly instead of through this message board.

My family, Surname WOOD, lived and farmed in the Wiccacanee Swamp area from before the Revolution until the turn of the 20th century, with Margarettsville as their post office. They married into the DeBerry lines that also lived in the area (DeBerry Mill Road and DeBerry Pond). This is the same line of Wood's that are descendants of James Wood, whose Last Will and Testament can be found on several websites.

Some Wood's may have stayed in Northampton, my branch left for Claremont, Virginia in the late 1800s.

The will is in Northampton Co., NC. Jacob was the son of Moses Odom and Rachel ________. Moses died in 1792 in Northampton Co. leaving a will. Moses seems to have come from Chowan or Hertford Counties. He probably traces back to Moses and Martha Odom of Nansemond Co., Va. in the early 1700s.
The records of Hertford & Nansemond have been thoroughly destroyed so it is difficult to know. Futrell and Jenkins are easier to trace.
Jacob is my ancestor. One of his daughters married Enos Fly/Flythe.
Bonnie
I have the following, don't know if it is any help, you probably already have it. This William Jean was married to Mary Wornum and in her will she mentions her sister Jane Williams. Otherwise I do not see any connection but have always wondered why William was guardian to these children. It appears he was first married to an Olive, last name unknown.

It appears that John Harding was probably the husband of Sarah.

Does John McGregor's will mention a William Jean/Jane? It is often transcribed as Jones or James.....
Renee

Record of Estates, Northampton Co., NC Volume II, Estates Found in Court Records, 1792-1816, by David B. Gammon - #79 - William Jean was apptd. gdn. of Ransford & Elizabeth Flowers, orphans, June Court 1795. Accounts of William Jean, their dec'd gdn. ordered settled, June Ct. 1795. Money was received from Geo. Rives (administrator of William Jean, former guardian of the orphan).
I know he apparently had a sister named Else, who was not married circa 1768, I no knowledge of her after that time. We only know of one child and that is William Jr, but there were surely more. No will or estate information has been located for William Sr.

I have learned from another Jean researcher that William Jean and John McGregor were named administrators of Ransfords estate in his will.

There is also a will for Ransford Flowers Jr, in 1811 Greensville County, VA. I have not seen the will and don't see that anyone has any information on him but Greensville County is also where the descendants of William Jean moved to.

William Jean Jr was the guardian of Ransford Jr and Elizabeth Flowers after his father died and gave guardian accounts from 1795 until 1800, he died about 1801 and then John Harding filed guardian accounts for them after that. John Harding was a witness to William Jean Jr's will.

In John Hardings account for the orphans in 1801 Young Johnson and Francis Darby were paid money. Young Johnson also had some family relationship to the Jean family. He is mentioned in the will of Mary Wornum Jean (second? wife of William Jean Sr.) as a "beloved friend" and an executor of her will. Young then became a middle name in this family. Francis Darby was named as an administrator of William Jean Jr's estate in his will.

Maybe there are some answers or clues in Ransford Jr's will. There is probably some connections by marriage.

Jean is often written Jane/Janes and Gean and more often than that is transcribed as Jones and James.

Renee

James & Tabitha Dupree

James Dupree was originally from Greensville County, VA, the son of Lewis Dupree. He was definitely married twice, and was perhaps married three times. The first wife may have been Mary Adams. The second wife was definitely a Miss Bass, daughter of Samuel Bass. The third wife was Mrs. Tabitha (New) Morris, widow of Chislon Morris, whom he married in 1803. James Dupree died in Northampton in 1815 or 1816, and his wife Tabitha died testate in Northampton in 1845. I am most interested in his children by Tabitha:

1. Rebecca C. Dupree, born about 1813, married 1834 Barnes G. Clarke. (Apparently no issue)
2. Madison Dupree, married first Adeline Liscombe, second Sarah B. Fox. He left issue, and this is my line.
3. John D. Dupree - no further record.
4. Lewis Dupree, married first Nancy Minton in 1827, second Mary Nicholas in 1828. No further record.
5. Gideon Dupree, married 1835 Mariah W.E. (Harris) Barkley, widow of Henry P. Barkley. She died in 1838 in Northampton.

I have good information about the descendants of Madison Dupree, but have nothing on the other siblings. I am hoping someone may have more information on them. Thanks!

David Gammon
