Nathan Gray c.1765-1825 (wife Nancy) b.probably Dobbs Co. Lived in Dobbs, Duplin, Lenoir and died in Onslow. Appears to be son of Ludwick/Lodowick Gray who moved to Dobbs(or New Hanover) in the 1750's from Pasquotank. Ludwick/Lodwick
Gray was a grandson of Griffin or Griffith Gray who settled in Albemarle in the 1660's and died there in 1680's. Gabriel Gray b 1788 d 1856 was the eldest son of Nathan and Nancy. Another son was Joseph Clark Gray b. c1805 (may have married a daughter of Hosea Williams, Mary who married Phillip Aman, Lucretia who married Jesse Cooper. Other children unidentified. I am interested in exchanging information with anyone researching this Gray family.

It has pictures and documents from Camp Lejeune's takeover of the land. The Coston cemetery was in tract F-10. Go to Records>Area F>F-10 Coston Cemetery to see descriptions of all the markers as well as blueprints of the cemetery. Then go to Highlights/Information/Background Galleries>Family Cemeteries and look at image 34 for a letter about where they were moving the graves to.

Rebecca's father may have been either William or Alexander. Any info would be appreciated.

Looking through the will of Charles Cox of Onslow County(1771), it was mentioned that John Boston, a son-in-law was given the unborn child of the female slave, Peg. Further info leads us to believe that the Cox daughter was already deceased at the time of the will. We are looking for the name of that daughter and wonder if it could be Rebecca, named after her mother, Charles Cox's wife. We have info that says John Boston married a Rebecca Randal about 1760.
Could Randal be a middle name, not last? Anyone who may be able to help, please contact us.

My husband's family has been traced back to John Boston, who was either born in VA or NC in 1737. He married Rebecca Randal who was born in 1740 in Onslow County. They married about 1760. We know that John Boston was Major in the Onslow Militia and supposedly fought in the battle of of the Guilford Courthouse, along with 3 brothers, one may have been Matthew. We were told that 2 of them died on the battlefield but neither were John or Matthew.

Any info on Boston's in the area in the late 1600's through the 1700's would be appreciated.

M. Evans, and John Evans and Nan Evans. Jesse King was taking care of Mary and her children until Mary died.

Family Folk Lore said that Julia was 3 years old when her mother died [@ 1858-59]. This is not possible. It is possible that her sister, Nan, was 3 years old when their mother died.[ Nan was born 1855/56.]
That makes Julia 11 or 12 years old and John 8 or 9 Years old when their mother, Mary EVANS, died.
Jessee King had his own children to rear so he found homes for Mary's illegitimate children.

Absolom Brown was already married{ in1856} when Julia came to live with him about 1858/59.
John Brown was not married when Nan came to live with him. so the story of the little girl climbing into a lap has to be Nan and not our Julia.
I don't know where John EVANS went. Possible he went with either of these gentlmen. Family tales tell us John Evans died young and is buried near Wilmington. Absolom Brown and John Brown are brothers.

the question still remains: WHO is the daddy?
Family folk lore has it that he is an Indian.
Do all of them have the same dad?

Sept1850 Upper SW, Onslow Co., NC
769 James KOONCE 30 farmer
Jacob 28
Susan 67
Leah EVANS 17 [Mary & Sally EVANS' 1st cousin, also orphaned]

774 Jessee King,42 [brother-in law of Mary]
Jesse & Sally Evans King children are:
Marthy 16, fanny jane 14, Elizabeth 12, Sarah, 10, & John James KING 8.
Mary EVANS 30
Julia A.
I was told they moved to SC and the first children were born in SC. I think Horry, SC. They moved back to Onslow County,NC and shortly Daniel Edward died. He does not appear on 1850 Onslow co, nc Census with Susan and children. Daniel Edward HUDSON and Susan PIERCE HUDSON are my ggggrand parents. I was told Susan is buried in the Barber Cemetery. I believe they had 8 children.
[?F,?F,John, Jimmy, Edward, "Sue" Susan, Bryant William, Sealy.
their 2nd son "Jimmy" Daniel James HUDSON married Julia Ann EVANS(my gg grand parents). they had 9 children.
Their 3rd is James "Frank" Franklin HUDSON who married "Indie" Indiana FLOYD.(my great grand parents) Their daughter is my grandmother.
Julia Ann EVANS had sibblings. HEr Little sister is Nan EVANS ROYSTER; and a little brother named John. John died young. Absolom B. BROWN and his wife Sarah Elizabeth HOLT raised Julia. "Nan" was about 3 years old when her mother died.
Family tales tell us that Nan climbed into the lap of whoever raised her and asked if she could go home with him. They packed her things in a Red hankerchef. Their mom's name is Mary Elizabeth Evans. Her mother was not married to her father from what I was told by my grandmother. Any info on this family is appreciated.

Re: Daniel McDaniel

Hi Jo Ann,
I know this says Janet she is my cousin in Daytona and we share Ancestry. Daniel McDaniel was my GGGGgrandfather and the Edward Archibald McDaniel you mention is indeed Daniel and his first wife's son. I also see a question from my cousin Al McDonald on this link and he says Daniel probably died about 1848. The Stump Sound, Onslow, NC 1850 Census does show Holland Guthrie McDaniel age 50 and her son from a previous marriage William J. Guthrie and Issac McDaniel brother to Edward. I did send away for a copy of their marriage license and will send you a copy if you want, also have Edward and Rose's. Do you know the full name of Hollands first husband and her maiden name?
Edward and Rose (Barber) moved their family from NC to Florida in early 1850s and first show in the 1860 Port Orange, Volusia County, Census were he build a large hotel on the 69 acres he got in a federal land grant and the descendents of Edward still live in the Port Orange area. If you want to see a little bit more of them you can log onto my blog at http://portorangeted.blogspot.com/
I live in Atlanta but will retire next year and move back to Port Orange. I do a lot with the local P. O. Historical Society. I would love to know more about Holland Guthrie and any info on Daniels first wife, some think her name was Mary but I do not know. If interested I can send a pdf of Edwards section that show how they lived in Fl and influenced the area. To confuse the matter he changed the surname McDaniel to McDonald in the 1880s. Several versions of why but I researched the Volusia files and no official name change just mentioned in a 1884 deed.
I did contact Ora Smith with the Onslow Co., Historical But she thinks we are part of another Daniel McDaniel in NC. I will be glad to help in any way I can. I do most of the family history for the Johnson's and McDonald's and quite a few others.
Ted Johnson
770-979-0235

Looking for any info on Daniel McDaniel, he is my GGGGrandfather.

A cousin told me: Daniel McDaniel first appears in the census of 1810 as a single man between the age of 15 and 26 (if I am reading the census right. census at that time were confusing). At the same time in Onslow County, there was a woman (head of household) named Mary McDaniel that had two sons between 1 and 10, one son between 11 and 15, and two sons between 15 and 26. Mary does not appear in later census.

Daniels son Edward Archibald gave his father’s birthplace as NC and Daniel was the only McDaniel living in Onslow County for the whole period 1820-1840. He also had a son Issac McDaniel. It looks like he and his first wife had 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls, it is believed his first wife's name was Mary? His second wife was Holland Guthrie and per their marriage license they were married in Onslow, NC August 5, 1839. I did find a Daniel McDaniel living in Onslow, County, NC in the 1830 and 1840 Census. 1830 Census shows 7 people living the home and 1840 Census shows 6 people living in home. 1 male 50-59 Daniel, 1 male 5-9, 1 male 15-19 (Edward probably), 1 female 30-39 wife, 2 females 10-14.

Daniel must have died before the 1850 Census it only shows his 2nd wife Holland age 50, Issac McDaniel age 9 and William J. Guthrie age 19 a son from her previous marriage.
Trying to find any info on his first marriage, dates, names, names of their children, when he died and where he is buried. Anything. I have lots of info to share.
I know this says Janet Vining she is my cousin and we share Ancestry. I'm Ted Johnson and live in Atlanta.
My next door neighbor in Sneads Ferry, Valima Davis Lewis, was a descendant of Cornelius Breece, thru his daughter Dorie who married James Chadwick Davis. There was also a Cornelius Breece cemetery, down at Fulcher's Landing, I think, that got destroyed to build a road. I do not have the names from it but I think they may be in one of the Cemetery Records of Onslow County that Michael Whaley compiled for New Hanover Co Library. The phone number I was given to check on the availability of these books is 910-798-6305. They have them at the Onslow County LIbrary on Doris St in Jacksonville & most likely at the Main Library in Wilmington.

Hi, I am related to Nancy who is the wife of Cornelius Breece . Prior to her marriage she was living in the household of Edward and Mary Hobbs, listed as Nancy Hall 27 years, in the 1850 Onslow County census. She is shown there with two 4 year old boys who we believe were her twins. They were most likely born out of wedlock. One of them, Edward Jackson Hall, was my G grandfather.By the time the 1860 census rolls around she has left the boys and married to Cornelius Breece who I believe I am correct in saying, has lost his first wife and mother of his older children including the William you refer to.As far as his presence in the Martin household, I believe he was just working in order to live since his mother had died and his dad had remarried. I do not have any of the Breece family photos ,only those of my Hall side of this family. Hope this hlps a little , Steve

Hi,
I don't know if we have connected before now, but I am interested in knowing if there was any connection between William? Breece and the Martins with whom he was living in 1860. I notice that (if I am not mistaken) he was listed as white and the Martins as mulattoes, and he may have died during the Civil War. Am I correct? I am writing this from memory right now, and may be incorrect on the first name of the young Breece fellow. One researcher told me that she thought that Susan Martin's parents were probably Cornelius and wife? Breece who lived a few doors away. What do you know about these families and why was the young white fellow living with a mulatto family? I would like to have any pictures of the Breece family to help me make any decisions and I would share pictures of some of the Martins if you are interested. Thank you so much, Rebecca Hein (Rebecca.Hein@sbcglobal.net

Hello,

Contact Kim Crouley at the Jacksonville, North Carolina Main Branch Library (Genealogy and research department). She maintains a great deal of local information. You can google the library and get her telephone number.

Also, you could try the New Hanover County library (Local History department). Google that too. Ask for Beverly Tetterton, I think she still works there.

Another avenue that you may look into is searching for "quarriteen (spelling) homes" This is were sick people were secluded, sometimes for years. There were numerous of these homes throughout Onslow County.

Jack

http://www.lulu.com/jackrobinson

Best wishes,
