thank you for this answer. I am now trying to find out if Sylva Morris was a slave before the civil war or a free black. she had twins sons in 1860 and then my gr gr grandfather in 1868 who ended up with Solomon Morris in IN. and one of his older brothers, one of the twins is shown, but I find no records as to why she would have had the morris name, unless she had the children by Solomon, but she was not his wife, he had a family. we were never told that our gr grandfather was black. we were told cherokee. does not bother me at all, just want to find out more about them. and it is so hard to find out information if you have african relatives.
