Ken
My father was the Walter Dally Burton from the 1974 obituary. I was trying to find more information about the Burton Family
My name is Ray Burton the youngest of seven. I was in the US Marines when my father passed and was unable to attend his funeral, Did not know of the Burton Family Cemetery until my sister told me about it when one of my brothers Walter Dally Burton Jr. passed some years ago. Just started looking for the Cemetery and found it this weekend. Take Exit 408 from I40 south and take a left onto Hwy 210 east. Following 210 east past over northeast Cape Fear River Bridge, Keep following 210 and it will curve to the right. At the next curve 210 curves right again there is a mobile home on the right side of the road a few 100 yards past that on the right I found the woods, where I found the Cemetery if you get to next drive way on the right you have gone too far. There is a white post at the base of the woods with a path leading to the Cemetery. Like you indicated the Cemetery is in the woods. It hasn't been taking care of. (Graves not marked.)
There are a few headstones, one that reads for Susie Ray little dau of J.B. & NANNIE BURTON Born July 20, 1912, Died July 3, 1914. Not sure who this is or what the relation

Thanks for any help!
-Ray
I am interested in the African American Corbett side of this name. I realize that it may contain the plantation type information. I am trying to fill in the African American Corbett names form New Hanover, Atkinson, and Burgaw areas. A name that sticks out right now is General (first name) Tatsey Corbett and General (first name) Jackson Corbett.

You can reach Joseph Sheppard at New Hanover Public Library, 201 Chestnut Street, Wilmington, NC 28401 He is Research Librarian in the NC Room..They have a vast genealogical and history library there on the 2nd. floor. Phone#910-798-6305.

If you need copies of any vital records or deeds, the office that takes care of that is right next door, and NH county Courthouse is only a few blocks away(long blocks though). Copies are only 25 cents unless they have increased that cost. You'll be able to spend all day in the NC Room or several days as their collection of materials is very vast. The NC room is very well organized and volunteers are very helpful and knowledgable.

Bladen, Pender, Columbus are all next to each other. Look at a map that shows the counties of NC. Google and you'll find it. I needed one for California and I used google to find a map showing all the counties in that state. I'm sure NC has one too. I used to have one in my research books but don't know which one..

New Hanover County, NC vital records can be view at www.onhgs.org, click on links, then click on New Hanover vital records. You will be able to view births, marriages and deaths and some real estate dealings.

Corbett is a prominent surname in Wilmington..you might want to check with Beverly Tetterton or Joseph Shepherd at the N.C. Room in the Wilmington Public Library. Beverly has written several wonderful books on Wilmington. I own one of her books..what Corbett name are you looking for? There was a Corbett Basket Co. in Wrightsboro area and I think the Corbett family has something to do with the famous Airlie Gardens, near Wrightsville Beach. Toss some names at me and maybe it might be listed in Beverly's book. I also have some cemetery books from Wilmington here. There are also Corbett families over in Brunswick county which is in next county from New Hanover.

I appreciate your response - glad to share any information that I have as well. The Amos Wheeler I'm researching was actually born around 1825 (not sure why I had 1880 in the post) - was married twice - first to Susan E. Beasley (if I'm remembering correctly) and then around 1880 to Margaret Pagget, daughter of Reason Pagget. The later wife is my gr gr grandmother.

I've had a lot of trouble tracking this Amos over the years - appears to be another Amos (New Hanover Co area) who was a contemporary but I'm told they were "definitely" not related ...

I believe these Wheelers were eventually from around Watha.

Any thoughts you have would be welcomed!

Bill

I'm looking for any information the whereabouts of the English Family Cemetery in or around the Willard/Watha area south and east of Wallace. I have seen the English Cemetery on findagrave.com and either it's not the same cemetery or not fully transcribed. Not a single one of my family members who are buried in the English Family Cemetery (as referenced by their death certificates) are buried in the one on Findagrave. Does anyone from the Willard or Watha area know where this family cemetery might be?

Morris Nichols 1796 was amoung them and was the oldest there.

Looking for family of Quaker (other spellings Quaraker, Quasker and was possibly known as Pony) Garrison and his wife Rhoda (most likely Nixon, father Richard Nixon Mother Annie Jane). They lived in Topsail in 1900/1920 per census. His birth on 1900 Census is May 1836. Rhoda/Rhodie said to be buried in Topsail Cemetery. Rhoda and Quaker's Father/Mother both listed as born in NC. Quaker's Father's name maybe Jack and he may have had a brother named Amanuel/Emanuel. On Grant Township, New Hanover, NC on 1870 Census there is Pony Garrison and wife listed as Ritta. Other children in 1870 seem to match later census info. when listed as Quaker. Trying to determine if Pony from 1870 is Quaker Garrison. There are Nixon families in same area. Also, there is a common family name of Richard Caldwell Garrison that as passed to my husband, his father, and his grandfather, who we believe is a son of Quaker/Pony Garrison.
Will be visiting NC in Oct 2010 so any suggestions will be appreciated.

Unknown Mormon Girl Buried in Hampstead NC Grave
Looking for answers about a
Mormon girl buried in a N.C. grave

Story By Jake Hancock Mormon Times Tuesday, May. 25, 2010

HAMPSTEAD, N.C. -- The father had helplessly watched his little girl deteriorate from sickness to death a few days earlier. And now he stands 2,500 miles from home with a borrowed shovel in his hand.

Besides the company of a 9-year-old local boy who happened upon the scene, the solemn father, a Mormon traveling from Utah, was alone as he buried his child in an unfamiliar North Carolina cemetery just off the Atlantic shoreline. There were no pallbearers or relatives to help carry the actual and emotional weight of it all. There were no flowers. And there were no prayers -- at least none uttered aloud.

It was just a father in a grassless, windswept cemetery toiling to tear open a fresh wound in the earth as precisely wide as the size of the hole left in his heart.

That was in 1925. And while the father's pain of burying his toddler might have waned over the years until his own death sometime later, the feeling of that ominous afternoon in Hampstead, N.C., only worsened for the dirty redheaded Mormon boy who momentarily paused work in his family's nearby garden to aid the desperate father in the Mormon church-owned cemetery.

Today, that once-youthful boy, Marion Barnhill, is now a frail 93-year-old man desperate for answers to a mystery he's only held a handful of clues to for the past 85 years. He said that before he dies, he wishes someone somewhere will recognize the following story from their relatively recent family history. He hopes they'll come forth with the identity of the unidentified girl, who may have siblings still alive today.

An 85-year rewind

At his mother's request that spring morning in 1925, Barnhill went to work in the family garden, which shared a property line with the graveyard.

"That's when I saw them drive up the dirt road into the cemetery," Barnhill said. "I don't 'member the color, but I know it was a four-door (car)."

The father stepped out of his vehicle, approached the boy and asked for a shovel. While young Barnhill hustled to the barn and back, the man unloaded a smallish, "about 36-inch-long" casket from the backseat of his car.

The man worked in mostly silence, but a few details from their spotty conversation burned into Barnhill's memory.

The father said he and his wife were traveling from Utah eastward through the South when their daughter fell ill and died before they could get medical attention. He said he purchased the child's casket from a morgue 15 miles away in the city of Wilmington and that someone at the morgue -- probably after discovering the couple was Mormon -- gave the father directions to the Hampstead LDS Cemetery, a small, once-privately owned graveyard close to the coastline that had been donated to the church for its members' use.

Perhaps too stricken with grief, or too upset for having to bury her baby so far from home, the man's wife, the little girl's mother, stayed in the car and watched the unsophisticated interment from a distance.

"She never got out," Barnhill remembered. "Not once."

Was she sick, perhaps too weak to get out after catching her child's contagious disease while caring so intimately for her?

Planting a memory

Although the out-of-town strangers appear to have acted rashly -- they didn't get permission for, or officially record, the burial plot; they didn't buy a headstone or a common granite grave marker -- the couple acted with apparent tenderness and conceivably with all the sentiment they could afford.

The Hampstead LDS Cemetery in North Carolina. The cedar tree was planted in 1925 by a father to mark the grave of his 3-year-old girl who died suddenly while on a trip from Utah to the East Coast.

After tolerating the earth swallowing his defeated angel, and while still wearing his suit and tie, the father carefully hand-packed the last of the sandy soil on the unmarked grave and started digging another hole. In that little grave, however, he buried new life: a five-foot-high cedar sapling.

He took a coin from his pocket and turned to the boy.

"He told me he'd pay me a quarter if I agreed to pour a bucket of water on the tree every day for seven days," Barnhill said. "That was a lot of money back then, especially to a kid."

Barnhill walked the half mile from his home to the cemetery every day for a week and fulfilled his agreement by drawing water from a nearby pond.

He never watered it again.

Growing up

While the cedar survived 80-or-so years worth of windstorms and droughts, Barnhill endured his own battles during that time.

After joining the military, German troops shot Barnhill's bomber plane out of the air while he was flying his eighth mission in World War II, killing his co-pilot. Enemies stormed the downed plane, grabbed still-alive Barnhill and detained him in Stalag Luft III, a German prison camp, for 18 months. Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army charged into the camp with blazing firepower in 1945 and released the prisoners.

He returned home, married in 1947 and raised a large family in the gospel. And later, he served as stake president and patriarch in the Hampstead area.

But no matter what he did or where he served, that once-small and -vulnerable grave marker, which eventually grew into one of the largest, most majestic trees in the cemetery, was ever present, always reminding him of the nameless darling at its roots.

Years later, Barnhill briefly mentioned the experience in his book, "History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hampstead, N.C." Over the years, the story of the little girl has become a sort of local legend, one that sparked fresh interest in 2008 among Hampstead Latter-day Saints.

"I had a burning desire to have the child's grave marked, as it broke my heart to think of how her parents, so far from their home in Utah, must have felt leaving their little daughter behind," said Laura McLeod, the Hampstead Ward activity days leader.

McLeod's passion stirred others to help, like Michael Cole, owner of nearby Hanover Monument Works, who stepped up and donated a stone monument engraved with a six-sentence synopsis of the story.

A trace of evidence

It was during that same time, when the ward was buzzing about the girl, when Ruth Shingleton, a longtime ward member, raised her hand during Relief Society. She spoke up and corrected a sister who expressed regret that the little girl's family "just forgot about her," Shingleton remembered.

"I said, 'No, they didn't forget her. Her family came looking for her a few years ago,'" she said. "Twelve to 15 years ago," a couple from back west traveled through Hampstead looking for local Latter-day Saints who might be able to help them find "the unmarked grave of a little girl buried in a Mormon cemetery," Shingleton said.

Locals directed the couple to Shingleton and her late husband, both prominent Mormons in the community who lived in a distinguishable home along a main highway.

Shingleton answered the door and briefly spoke to the couple. She regrets not asking more questions. Today, she can't recall their names but described them as white and between 30 and 40 years old.

"They said (the story) was in their family records," she said. "They seemed to be close to her, at least close enough they wanted to place a (grave) marker."

She sent the searching couple to Henry Maples, president of the volunteer-run Hampstead LDS Cemetery Association and also longtime ward member.

And that's where the story, or rather its clues, dead end. Completely. The couple never placed a marker and, to anyone's knowledge, never returned.

Henry Maples died not too long after the couple visited, taking the family's identity with him. Henry Maples didn't appear to have left any notes on the grave plat or other records about the visit behind, according to his son Duane Maples, the new association president who lives in his late father's home next to the cemetery.

Duane Maples peered out his window during a recent phone interview. He looked over the neighboring cemetery, over his "quiet neighbors." He glanced at the towering cedar tree. "There it is," he said. "Miracles happen, I guess. It's always possible someone reads the story and comes forward. But I just don't know. ... It's a long shot."

But it's exactly the kind of long-shot miracle Barnhill still wishes for, even expects from the help of other church members inspired by the promised help of the biblical spirit of Elijah.

"Someone out there knows," Barnhill said. He started to cry. Then, with a kind of emotional, high-pitched tone that often accompanies tears, he asked to be excused. "I'm sorry. Please understand. This is close to my heart."
I fully agree. I sent the woman a note and received a really rude, condescending nasty note back from her and she the blocked my email so I couldn't respond. None of us need to be dealing with people like her and those who condone her. I'll not ever send one more item to them.

What a disgrace to all of genealogy researchers everywhere! I just found that the Pender county ncgenweb site has copied all of Diane & Matt's information from their Pender County site! Isn't that just horrible! I guess ncgenweb doesn't know how to come up with thier own information so they copy all of the information Diane and Matt have instead. It really turns my stomach. No wonder Diane and so many others are leaving and moving their sites if those people just copy others hard work without asking. If you ask me, I will continue to use Diane & Matt's site and I won't ever go back to using those ncgenweb sites again. How much other information on their sites have they copied as well? Hey guys, Diane's sites are here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nctttp/ I emailed her to find where she had moved them to. I think I will stick with the originals and not the imitators or the copiers and thieves. What a disgrace! I never thought that the genweb community would stoop to being theives and stealing and copying others work! Shame shame shame on them!

I will be sending a lot of new info to Matt to add to his Pender site and ncgenweb better NOT copy it and add to their site! I hope everyone else will join me in boycotting those that copy others work instead of creating their own instead. Let's stick with Diane and help her and Matt create awesome sites instead of people that had rather steal the information than to come by it honestly!
Joan
