My Batemans were in Tyrrell and Washington Counties, but, as the eastern NC Batemans appear to all be related, I have been collecting data on those in other counties. Here's what I have on Lorenzo Dow BATEMAN, who was a son of Benjamin BATEMAN.

Benjamin must have had two or more wives. There was a big age difference between L. D. Bateman, and his brothers Benj., Kenneth and Elisha, named above. The last wife appears to have been Mary, but I don't know about the other wives. When Elisha died about 1883, his lands were mentioned as having descended to Nancy WHITE, Margaret HUMPHLET, Baker BATEMAN, of age, and Joseph, Martha, L. D. & Ada BATEMAN, under age. The minor children are possibly all heirs of Elisha's brother, Lorenzo Dow Bateman, who had died about 1879. The others are possibly Elisha's siblings??

Account 1850, L. D. BATEMAN administrator. Buyers at sale included Baker H., Joseph, John BATEMAN, Jeff. GILBERT, Nancy GIBSON.

Since Lorenzo Dow Bateman was made guardian to his siblings Kenneth, Benj. & Elisha, and they were so much younger than him, it certainly appears that Lorenzo's father, Benjamin Bateman, had more than one wife. This Mary Bateman must have been the mother of Elisha at least.
