I also need to go farther with William and Milbrey.

I am looking for the cemetery my Great Great Grandmother, Flora McGirt, is buried. According to her death certificate, she is buried in Pee Dee Chapel. From what I know is it located at 4702 Pee Dee Chapel Road, Hamer, South Carolina. Looking at a satellite image on terraserver-usa. com, it shows a building, but I do not see any graves.

Flora McGirt was born in Robeson County and I am hoping some on this board may know of this cemetery. It is not located far from Lumberton.

I am hoping someone can tell me if the address is correct and that there is a cemetery located there. Any info would be a big help.

(source Book 6, Page 132 Stanly County Death Certificates) I assume "Robinson" is actually "Robeson".

Susan was widowed (Lineberry) with three small children before June 1909 when she married Turner J.
Hedgpeth cemeteries query

Hello,

I am a newbie Hedgpeth researcher who is going to be in the Fairmont area next month (October 14-16). I would like to visit some Hedgpeth cemeteries during my visit, if possible.

According to ePodunk.com, there are three Hedgpeth cemeteries in the rough vicinity of Proctorville. One of these, the Joseph H. Hedgpeth cemetery off of Hwy #130, has been documented both online and in "Vanishing Ancestors, Volume 3." One of the other Hedgpeth cemeteries looks like it's a little ways off of route 2234 (Oakton Church Road) just south of 2230 (Atkinson Road). The other Hedgpeth cemetery looks like it is off of route 2234 northwest of the junction of 2232 (Proctorville Church Road). I believe one of these cemeteries may also be known as the John T. Hedgpeth cemetery.

Has anyone been to any of these Hedgpeth cemeteries or is familiar enough with the area to give more precise instructions to get to them, and possibly also give me an idea about the condition of the cemeteries? I'd hate to rely solely on the GPS especially if we have to go through farmland for any distance, which looks like it may be true for the last two Hedgpeth cemeteries.

I would also be interested in hearing from other Robeson County Hedgpeth families. I am hooked into the Hedgpeths through my great-grandmother, Bertie Hedgpeth, who married a Pittman. Bertie's parents were Joseph Wynn Hedgpeth and Emma Joan Small. Joseph Wynn's parents were Stephen Hedgpeth and Mary Britt. Stephen's parents were William Hedgpeth and Absaley Loe. I am trying to put together a more comprehensive family tree of Hedgpeths as it is my understanding that all Hedgpeths in Robeson County are related.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Teresa Pittman Link

The wife was reported to be either a military vet, or the daughter of a military family - from SC. Any help would be appreciated

In the 1850's she was living in the household of Archibald M. McCormick in Stewartsville, Richmond County. In his will, Archibald refers to Margaret as his sister-in-law, so Archibald's wife Jennett must have been a Murphy, too. The McCormicks had a son named Murphy McCormick, and a greatgranddaughter named Margaret Murphy Jernigan whose son was named Murphy McLean.

I am a descendant of Solomon Locklear who was born in Robinson county NC in 1830 and also claimed to be of Indian descent. He and some of his closest relatives moved to Bladen county (Colly) NC which borders Robinson county to the east. Incidentally the descendants of his relatives that moved to Bladen county with him now claims to be 100% Indian and finds it very offensive if anyone hints at them being related to African Americans. They are much lighter in complexion than we are but their hair is more kinkier (not straight) than ours.

Solomon Locklear must have married more than once because he was 30 years older than his wife Caroline. They had 16 children and both died in the Colly township of Bladen county NC. I am in search of Solomons parents who was said to have lived and died somewhere between Lumberton and Pembroke in Robeson county NC

Hello,
Does anybody know of a way to take a map of Robeson County and pinpoint where a household or family number is located at the time of the 1850 census? The census records give the household number and family number then list the people located at that location. It would be great to be able to locate the family on a map. Thanks, Don Conoly dconoly@mindspring.com

Thomas Baxter Baxley - from Robeson County?

Our family is tracking down information on Thomas Baxter Baxley.
Born March 1st, 1857 in North Carolina.
Died on Oct 9th, 1936 in Richmond County, N.C.
His children were Grover C. Baxley, William A. Baxley, Elisha R. Baxley, James L. Baxley, John T. Baxley, and Bertha Baxley.

We have found a few trees that have John W. Baxley and Jane P. Holdsworth as his parents.

What we can't find is any definite proof that those are his parents, since we can't find a birth certificate.

John and Jane were married in Cumberland County, but John resided in Robeson County when he enlisted in the confederate army in Charleston, at age 35, March 10th, 1863.

Who John W's parents were is another mystery.....

Anyway if anyone can help out that would be great, I am almost positive that the Richmond County Baxleys came from Robeson County, but we just need some help proving it.

I am looking for information regarding the marriage bond between James B. Barlow and Sarah Biggs. James B. Barlow was born in Robeson County, NC ca 1795, possibly in Fayetteville. Sarah Biggs was born ca 1805 also in Robeson County, NC, possibly in Fayetteville, also. If anyone could help me with this, I sure would appreciate it. I would not only like to know the date they were married, but who it was that married them. I have reason to believe that it was a family member that actually married them, but I am not sure. Thank you very much!

Robeson County is a County of Interest to the Lost Colony Project

This posting is to make Robeson county researchers aware of the Lost Colony Genealogy and DNA program. You may have read about the program, but much has transpired since the inception of this project this past summer. After the general info here, we’ll give you specifics about the surname and our project.

First, neither Roberta Estes, Anne Poole, Nelda Percival nor Jennifer Sheppard are associated with the Lost Colony Center for Science and Research as was initially posted in the summer of 2007. We all resigned in September and are moving forward with our Genealogy and DNA Research program as an independent group of volunteers.

Secondly, our goal remains to discover whether or not any of the colonists survived. In order to make that determination we have put together a multi-step program.

Step 1 – Create a data base of DNA results and associated family genealogy in order to compare to same surname English families who are/may be related to the Lost Colonists.

Step 2 – Research the surnames of interest which include the colonist roster and other surnames that emerge in the areas where the colonists are believed to have settled, if they in fact survived.

Step 3 – Research the early NC and VA coastal records involving Native American tribes and early settlers.

Step 4 – Research English records to find relatives of the lost colonists.

Step 5 – Document the oral history and legends that pertain to the Lost Colony and colonist families including both family history and physical locations.

We are specifically looking for individuals who lose their genealogy very early in Eastern NC, those of Native American descent, or those who have done research either in NC, VA or the British Isles related to this surname.

In order to further that goal, we have established the two DNA project, a yline and a mitochondrial project which you can find at:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/LostColonyYDNA/

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/LostColonymtDNA/

We (Nelda actually) have created a website where we are providing DNA information along with genealogical research and other relevant data. Our Lost Colony website is located at:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~molcgdrg/index.htm

Please consider contributing to the site if you have any historical or extracted records from any of the early or coastal NC counties for any of our surnames. You can contribute data to be posted by contacting any of our administrators or sending it directly to our webmaster at nelda_percival@hotmail.com. Be sure to put "Lost Colony Website Posting" or something similar in the subject line.

We ask each of our participants to provide their genealogical information and any other relevant research which is also posted on the website, so please take the time to look closely at each of our sections.

Our frequently asked questions are here:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~molcgdrg/facts/faq3.htm

We’re also in wikipedia now at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Colony_DNA_Project

General Lost Colony articles of interest can be seen at our blog at:

http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/

Every researcher who is interested in these surnames, or in the Lost Colony specifically, can be invited to participate in our Yahoo group whether or not they have DNA submitted to the project. Many of our best researchers are descended from these surnames, but don’t carry them today. If you are interested sharing and contributing to ongoing research, let us know and we’ll send you an invitation.

Robeson county is one of the main areas of interest.

We need Robeson county members to participate. Do you have a surname of interest? (found on website and blog) Does your family track back to the British Isles? Do you know of research there? Do you know of any interesting oral history that relates to this topic? Do you know of anyone who has or might be conducting research there or who might interested in DNA testing?

We look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested in this history-making project. Our group is listed below with our research specialty.

*Roberta Estes – Native American, mixed race and early Virginia records, DNA analysis - restes@comcast.net

*Joe Chandler – British Isles and early NC and colonial records research – joechandler@yahoo.com

*Rob Noles – Lumbee Tribe, NC, SC and Georgia records - rbnoles@bellsouth.net

*Anne Poole – Oral History Documentation project and Archaeological locations - croatan56@gmail.com

*Janet Crain – Correspondence, historical research and Blog - ljcrain2@pgrb.com

*Nelda Percival – Webmaster and Lost Colony Yahoo Research Group moderator - nelda_percival@hotmail.com

*Penny Ferguson – Melungeon records, historical research – currently on sabbatical

*Jennifer Sheppard – Certified Genealogist, NC records - shepjr@coastalnet.com

*Dr. Ana Oquendo Pabon – African diaspora, Native American, DNA - ladoctora@gmail.com
Kinlaw people all seemed to have many children and there were lots of people with the same first name so I am stuck. . Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love to do whole families of brothers and sisters if at all possible.

Could anyone tell me if Kinlaw is from Scotland, Ireland or Scotch-Irish. ? I am lost on when and where my KINLAW clan entered the U.S. and if the entering state is North Carolina. It seems there were many named people of KINLAW were in N.C. so expect that is where they originated.

I have researched my KINLAW clan from my G grandfather as they went to Georgia and found wonderful information. However I do not have the opportunity to hit the N.C genealogy information sources because of distance and money.. If anyone ever needs Florida and Georgia information I have a much broader collection of information and sources. N.C. is a beautiful state and have been there many times in the past. . No wonder I was always comfortable visiting there.

Thank You

Jane Vaughan
Tampa, Florida

McMILLANs of Mid-1800S [NC & SC]

I have just located a new line, & desire to make contacts with potential family members. In 1840 Chesterfield Co, SC census, I located ggg g/fa ALEXANDER McMILLAN (50) born in NC, w/ gg g/mo HARRIET (16), & other family members. Also, 5 other McMILLAN 'h-o-h' for the same area were: [1] John D. (55) w/Archibold (52); [2] James (53) w/Ann (53); [3] James (51) w/Catherine (48); [4] William (49) w/ Jane (47); & John (28) w/Rebecca (29).
The McMILLAN family name has been prevalent throughout Robeson, Richmond, Cumberland & Bladen Co.s....just across the Chesterfield Co border. I would very much like to e-talk with any McMILLAN 'tree-climber' in these areas, which have any of these family units in their databanks. Please, let's e-talk. Bob E.
My ggg grandfather Richard BULLARD of Bladen/Robeson County, NC began having children (9 total) in Robeson by 1818 with his wife Elizabeth (nee unknown). So far I have not been able to find any record of their marriage in any state to identify ggg grandmother Elizabeth. She was born in Virginia in 1799, so they "could" have been married in VA. I would be ever so grateful to anyone who may have access to old marriage records for a marriage between Richard BULLARD and an Elizabeth, circa 1817. Thank you very much in advance and best regards. Mike

Donnie is my paternal grandfather. Trying to research the line...had a good bit of info, but, had a hard drive melt down with no disk backup and lost 95% of all my entire maternal and paternal info. Particular info including Donnie's second wife--my father's birth mother--would be most helpful also...as that was the last major brick wall that i was working on b4 hard drive meltdown. Any info appreciated: Ore2Roses@yahoo.com or apachequest@msn.com

Does anyone have any connections to the Alexander McDougald family that was in Robeson County, NC about 1812. They immigrated to North Carolina in 1792 from Scotland. There were 9 children: Archibald, Dougald, Catharine, Mary, Duncan, Sarah, John, Nancy and Alexander. I have a copy of the will and estate papers that I got from the NC archives back in 1998.

I am trying to connect this family to my Alexander McDougald who was born in 1794 in North Carolina and died in 1877 in Gadsden County Florida. I have been able to connect 2 brothers to him named John and Duncan.

If anyone knows anything about this McDougald family in Robeson County, NC, I would love to hear from you.

Cemeteries in Robeson County... Anyone working on listing them..

in great detail, inscriptions of tombstones and pictures? I would really like to help do this. I am looking for relatives and a certain Cemetery (Collins if anyone knows whether it really is near Hwy 41 SR 2208, please holler) myself and as I ride around this county I see literally tons of small cemeteries, overgrown and probably not documented at all. If only someone had taken a few minutes and written down directions and taken a photo or copied the gravestones, I wouldn't be hunting so blindly. I noticed there are projects out there for documenting cemeteries, BUT every single website I've found seems to have been abandoned, not updated and in the last few months Ive not gotten one response to my inquiries about helping. So I'm asking locally! Anyone doing this? Anyone interested? I intend to start documenting these things on my own and starting a database, but it would be nice to have a place to send the info I gather.

Email me at jynx@direcway.com if you can help!
Stephanie

Gaston Baxley/Lilly ? (Leola Barnes), Clarissa Prevatte

Does anyone have any information about the marriage between Gaston Baxley b.1902/04 Robeson NC to Lilly. The 1930 US Census shows Garton Baxley (misspelled)married to Lilly Baxley b.1902/04 but I can't find Lilly's maiden name. Their children were Curtis(m), Clyde(f) and Lane(m) Baxley.

I think Lilly may be Leola Barnes but I can't prove it.

Any information, PLEASE, would be greatly appreciated. I have hit a brick wall and can't seem to get over it.

This Baxley couple had a daughter named Clyde Jane Baxley b. 1927/8 who married John Gilbert Swain b.1924. I know the Swain Family was a very large family and I believe the Baxley and Barnes Family were also very dominant in Robeson.
With the size of these families and so many people interested in genealogy, I'm hoping that someone has tied these family together.

I believe Gaston E Baxley may be the son of Loranza D Baxley 1868-1923 and Clarissa Prevatte 1875-1972. They were married 4/1/1894.

Any info about this family may be posted here or sent directly to me at AGLujan@aol.com.

I was born in NC on 4/10/64. I may have been born in Rockingham County. But, I know my birth parents came from Robeson County.

My nickname when I was in foster care was Baby Polly. I was the second out-of-wedlock child born to this birth mother. The first was also a girl. I was adopted when I was a few months old to a couple in Carteret county.

I'm told my birth mother's family are "rather prominently connected". I personally don't understand what that means. But, I'm hoping someone else does, and it could help lead me to the family I was born into.

My birth mother had two sisters and a brother, and my birth father had a younger sister and brother. My birth mother's father died when she was six years old. He was a native of South Carolina.

My birth father's father also died when he was young.

If you may know of this family from Robeson county, please contact me. I would love to know them.

Thank you . . God bless you.
