STOKESDALE — Mr. A. B. Fulp, 86, died Sunday May 17, 2009 at Moses Cone Hospital.

Mr. Fulp's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday May 19, at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church with Rev. Dan Stowe and Rev. Tony Dowdy officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

A Rockingham County native, Mr. Fulp was born on September 8, 1922 the son of the late George Washington and Mattie Ricks Fulp.

He was a farmer, and a proud veteran of the US Army having served in World War II. Mr. Fulp was a well-known and respected community member known for his love of family and strong work ethic.

Surviving are his wife of sixty-two years, Lorene Gauldin Fulp of the home, son Charles E. Fulp and his wife, Donna, of Winston-Salem, daughter Gail Dowdy and her husband, Tony, of Kings Mountain, brother W. T. Fulp of Stokesdale, sister Blanche Alley of High Point, and five grandchildren Holly Fulp, Heidi Fulp, Joshua Dowdy, Micah Dowdy, and Gabriel Dowdy.

The family will receive friends this evening, Monday, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Forbis & Dick Brooke Chapel, and other times at the home.

SUMMERFIELD — Mrs. Sarah Neal Moore, 76, died Sunday morning May 17, 2009, at Moses Cone Hospital.

Mrs. Moore's funeral will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday May 19, at Mt Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Craig Toth officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

A Rockingham County native, Mrs. Moore was born on May 1, 1933 the daughter of the late Herman and Gladys McGee Neal.

She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by a son Paul (Jerry) Dunlap and brother Fred Neal.

Surviving are her husband Mr. Burley Moore of Wilmington, sons Fred Allen Neal (Fonda) , and Timothy Carlton Dunlap (Jeanie) all of Stoneville, Ronald L. Dunlap and Joseph Dunlap both of Summerfield, sisters Mrs. Edith Bradshaw of Stokesdale, Gail Brown of Madison, and brother Archie Neal of Stokesdale, ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends this evening, Monday, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Forbis & Dick Brooke Chapel, and other times at her son Fred's home in Stoneville.

Raymond R. Tilley

STOKESDALE — Mr. Raymond R. Tilley, 76, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 17, 2009.

Mr. Tilley’s graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Ararat, with Rev. Mitchell Pruitt officiating.

A Rockingham County native, Mr. Tilley was born on March 13, 1933, the son of the late Jessie and Minnie Bullins Tilley.

He was retired from Elastic Fabrics of America and of the Holiness faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Tilley; and sister, Vera Mabe.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Bessie Johnson Tilley of the home; children, Virginia Parson of Franklinville, Janice Parson and her husband, John, Charles Tilley and Donald Tilley and his wife, Lisa, all of Stokesdale; brothers, Eddie Tilley of Wentworth and Jimmy Ray Tilley of Reidsville; and sister, Doray Groce of War, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren, Shelia Vince, Tonia Parson, Garry Parson, Warren Parson, Jamie Parson, Krissy Parson, Danny Parson, Steve Parson, Craig Tilley and Clifton Tilley; four great-grandchildren, Samantha Vince, Niki Stiltner, Vince Crews, and Raegan Parson.

The family will receive friends this evening, Tuesday, from 6-8 p.m. at Forbis & Dick Brooke Chapel, and other times at the home.

MAYODAN - Mrs. Barbara Vernon Farmer, 70, of 1204 Virginia Street, died on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at First Baptist Church of Mayodan where she was a member with Reverend Randy Jessup officiating. Interment will follow in the Mayodan Municipal Cemetery.

Mrs. Farmer was born on November 7, 1938 in Rockingham County to the late Alfonze Vernon and the late Hallie Vernon.

She was retired from Unifi.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ronald Farmer; and a brother, R.C. Vernon.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Farmer of Mayodan; son, James Ronald Farmer II of Stoneville; sister, Madeline Carter of Dobson; brother, Jamie Lee Vernon of Madison; and a granddaughter, Chelsea Farmer.

REIDSVILLE — Lucille Mills Golden, 93, a resident of Penn Nursing Center died there on Sunday, May 17, 2009.

Graveside Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2009 in Reidlawn Cemetery.

A native of Virginia she was a daughter of the late Bessie Mills and had lived in Rockingham Co. most of her life. She was the owner and operator of Lucille's Beauty Shop until her retirement.

Mrs. Golden was preceded in death by her husband: Thurman Golden and a Great Granddaughter: Heather Y. Gunn.

Surviving is her son, Spencer "Brien" Smith and wife, Virginia of Reidsville; grandchildren Cindy Patterson and husband, Keith; Julie Whitt and husband, Johnny all of Reidsville; Sheryl White and husband, Michael of Easley, SC; Gary Carroll and wife, Regina of Eden; great grandchildren, Tyler White, Matthew Carroll, Anna Carroll, Stephanie DeHart, & Lauren Williams; step-great granchildren, Jake Scott, Zack Scott, & Kelsey Scott; great great grandson, Hunter Stultz; special friends Ann Boyd, Eloise Litaker, & Evelyn Moricle; special Aunt, Linda Koontz.

EDEN — Mrs. Nadine T. Lyons, 69, died May 16, 2009.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Rising Star Baptist Church in Eden. Burial will be in Hamlin Cemetery.

She was a native of Rockingham County and a retired textile worker.

She is survived by two sons, Bobby Lyons Jr. and Jimmy Lyons (Sherlene) both of Eden, two daughters, Freda Winfield of Nashville, TN, Mary Lyons of Reidsville, two brothers, the Rev. James Tinsley, Jr. (Mildred) and Rev Walter Tinsley (Lattie) of Eden, four sisters, Fannie Hairston (Rev. Fredrick) and Emma Broadnax (James) both of Eden, Wyoming Adams of Silver Springs, MD, Garnelle Martin (Jesse) of Fayetteville, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Michael Ray Edmonds

The funeral for Michael Ray Edmonds, 59, of Ridgeway, who died May 18, 2009, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Peoples Church of the Living God, west of Bassett. Bishop Dwayne Pruitt will officiate. Burial will be in the Deal family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. today and other times at the home at 6418 Morgan Ford Road, Ridgeway.

Edmonds was born in Eden, N.C., on Aug. 8, 1949, to Naomi Meeks Edmonds of Eden and Raymond Harry Edmonds. His father preceded him in death.

He served in the Army and worked in air conditioning and as a sheet metal mechanic before becoming disabled.
He was a member of the Peoples Church of the Living God and was involved in the bus ministry for many years.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Mary Witt Edmonds of the home; a daughter, Dorothy Ann Edmonds of Reidsville, N.C.; a son, Shannon Lee Edmonds of Patrick Springs; a sister, Wendy Donovant of Eden; two brothers, Jerry Edmonds and Harry Edmonds, both of Eden; three grandchildren; and four nephews.

Druscilla "Dru" Walker Hutchens, 64, of 160 Knottingham Way, Danville, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009 in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born November 26, 1944 in Ruffin, NC, she was the daughter of the late Elma Parsons Walker and the late Abner H. Walker.

She was married to J. Dillard Hutchens on February 23, 1963.

Dru was secretary/treasurer of Old Dutch Supermarkets, and was an active member of North Main Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School part-time. She was a member of the Dan-Pitts Chapter of ABWA, Danville Cancer Association and a former member of the Danville Christian Women's Club.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a daughter, Janice Aaron and husband, Keith and a son, Gary Hutchens and wife, Sandra all of Danville; three brothers, Wayne Walker of Eden, NC, Richard Walker of Martinsville, VA and Fred Walker of Burlington, NC; and two grandchildren, Brittany and Blake Aaron.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at North Main Baptist Church, Danville with Rev. Jason Barber and Rev. Gregg Palmer officiating Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens, Danville.

Edward Gene Dones

REIDSVILLE — Rev. Edward Gene Dones of 827 Robinson Circle died Sunday at the Moses Cone Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from the First Baptist Church, 401 Hubbard Street with Dr. Joseph A. Bryant and Pastor Robert Eberling presiding. Interment will follow in the Grooms Chapel Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

He was a native of Guilford County and a resident of Reidsville for the majority of his life.

Rev. Dones was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1966 and pursued further education at NC A & T State University. Having an illustrious career in the United States Army, he retired as a First Sergeant with twenty-five years of service, serving during the Vietnam Conflict. He was the Fellowship Minister at First Assembly Church where he served with the Praise and Worship Team. Rev. Dones was the former pastor of Trinity Baptist Church and formerly served as an associate minister at Grooms Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. He was a dedicated employee for the Metzler Corporation where held the position of manufacturing associate in safety, chaplin and union representative. In the community, he was an instructor the American Red Cross.

Survivors are: beloved wife of 37 years, Lillie Graves Dones of the home; one son, Carlos Dones and spouse, Melany of Austin, Texas; one daughter, Alisia Shanta Dones and fiancée, Timothy E. Valdez; special nephew, considered as son, Tyree Hairston; grandchildren, Autumn, Aminah and Isaiah; three sisters, Carolyn Galloway and Peggy Dones of Reidsville, Mary Dones of Greensboro; one brother, Dennis Dones and spouse, Teresa of Reidsville; special aunt, Lorraine Massenburg of Raleigh; beloved mother-in-law, Mary Jane Graves; one sister-in-law, Mona Lisa Graves; three brothers-in-law, Clarence Graves, Jr. Rev. Cleaandrus Graves and spouse, Laverne, Lorenzo Graves; nieces, Joyce and Shawanda Dones; additional nephews, Clifton and Denzel Dones; other relatives and a plethora of cherished friends.

Gertrude Smith

EDEN — Gertrude Smith East, 91, passed away Tuesday morning, May 19, 2009 at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Danview Cemetery.

Mrs. East was born September 13, 1917 in Spencer, daughter of the late Carl W. and Lura Strickland Smith.

She was the co-owner and operator of Draper Soda Shop and later John's Drive-In with her husband, John East, Jr. Mrs. East served her community as a volunteer at Morehead Memorial Hospital for over 30 years, was the past president and vice president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion and held offices in the Extension Homemakers Club. She loved to travel and did so throughout the world, was an avid reader, and loved to do crafts.

Surviving is her daughter, Judith East Winstead and husband, Mike of Reidsville; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Smith East, Jr.; sister, Zara Smith Cotton; and brothers, James and C. W. Smith.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Morehead Nursing Center, Kay Witty, and Sherry Hall for their support and loving care.

MAYODAN — Mrs. Margaret Bessie Dalton Simpson, 86, of 149 Ridge Road, Mayodan, died on Monday, May 18, 2009 at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the Chapel of Ray Funeral Home with Reverend James Ward Jr., Dr. Jerry Foley, and Reverend Mark Simpson officiating. There will be a private burial.

Mrs. Simpson was born on September 30, l922 in Patrick County, Va. to the late Abe E. Dalton and the late Suelzie Haley Dalton.

She was a member of Stoneville Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnie Lamon Simpson; brother, Tommy Dalton; and sister, Zelma "Tap" Dalton Foley.

She is survived by her children, Mike Simpson and wife Jo Beth and Timothy Simpson and wife Robin all of Mayodan, Marsena Pardee and husband Patrick of Summerfield; sister, Elzie "Dump" Dalton Spence of Stuart, Va.; brothers, Billy Dalton of Stuart, Va, and James H. "Sonny" Dalton of Walnut Cove; six grandchildren, John Simpson, Mark Simpson, Julie Moore, Josh Simpson, Amy S. Knight, and Ashley Simpson; and ten great grandchildren.

A native of Rockingham County, Mrs. Hodges was born January 29, 1944 to the late Charlie and Nina Watkins Kallam.

She was a member of Church of the Living God and had retired from Britthaven of Madison.

Surviving are her children, Bruce Wayne Tart and wife, Julia of Ridgeway, VA, Regina Tart Fuller of Eden, and Melissa "Lisa" Tart Rigney and husband, Mike of Stoneville; seven grandchildren, Kendall Rigney, Josh Tart, Jessica Bixby, Cassie Dixon, and Katie, Keith, and Hannah Fuller; sister, Helen Lemons of Eden; and brothers, Kenley Kallam of Thomasville, Calvin Kallam and wife, Beatrice of Eden, and Howard Kallam and wife, Dorothy of Martinsville, VA.

Reidsville– Clarence McKinnley Holcomb, 88, of 1126 N. Scales Street ,died on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at the Brian Center of Eden.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 22, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. at Wilkerson Funeral Home, with Dr. Harold Venable officiating. Burial will follow in Reidlawn Cemetery.

Mr. Holcomb, a native of Fries, Va., was the son of the late Paul Coy and Lilly Sexton Holcomb.

He was retired from Cone Mills and attended Calvary Hill Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Holcomb was preceded in death by his brother, Ira Lee Holcomb

He is survived by his sister, Ruth Holcomb Allen of Reidsville and numerous nieces and nephews.

EDEN — Mr. James Lawrence "GG" Lemons, 46, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Morehead Memorial Hospital.

The service of remembrance will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2009 at Boone-Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Lemons was born in Martinsville, Va. on August 18, 1962, a son of Cowboy and Jean Owens Lemons, both deceased.

He worked as a general contractor and logger. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and spending time with his wife, Cindi, granddaughter, Grace and his two Chihuahuas, Paco and Stretch.

He is survived by his wife Cindi Sharpe Lemons, granddaughter, Grace Harris, daughter, Dawn Earles Harris, grandmother, Margie K. Owens, mother-in-law, Peggy Sharpe; brothers-in-law, Pop Sharpe and family; Robert Sharpe and family and Rickie Sharpe and family; sister, Jamie Owens; brothers, Ken Lemons and Tim Lemons; special friends, Jipsey Boaz, Jimmy and Debra Rice, Bobby and Reda Shields, Donnie and Barbara Owens and family.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his nephew Mikey Otto and his father-in-law, Pete Sharpe.

MADISON — Mr. John Oscar Busick, II, 95, of 1661 Lindsey Bridge Road, died on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Lakeview Baptist Church where he was a member with Reverend Billy Nelson officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenview Cemetery in Reidsville.

Mr. Busick was born on December 24, l913 in Rockingham County to the late John Oscar Busick and the late Kate Whittemore Busick.

He had retired from the Reidsville Coca-Cola plant with 65 years of service. He was a member of the Reidsville and Madison Masonic Lodge and a member of the Shriners. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America where he was an honorary Eagle Scout, obtained the Order of the Arrow and Silver Beaver, and was a past president.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Grey DeGrotte Busick and second wife, Eleanor Gay Webster Busick.

He is survived by his children, Bonnie Fish of Charlotte, Fred Busick of Reidsville, Johnny Busick and Bill Busick both of Madison, and Kathryn McMichael of Eden; three grandchildren, Robert Fish, Kathryn Tinsley, and Dorothy Stafford; and three great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m., on Friday, May 22, 2009 at the funeral home and all other times at the residence.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, at the Church of God of Prophecy. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mrs. McCaslin was born in Martinsville,Va. on November 2, 1970.

She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, she graduated from Morehead High School and Appalachian State University. She was a 1st grade teacher at Leaksville Spray Elementary School.

She is survived by her husband, James McCaslin of the home and her daughter Kara McCaslin and step-daughter Kimberly McCaslin, both of the home. Parents Robert and Mavis Thomas of Eden. Uncle, Rudolph Teaster, Jr of Greenville,SC. Aunts, Betty French and Phyllis Smith of Eden. Mother and Father-in-law, Genell and Clyde Hicks of Kernersville. Cousins, Katy Adkins, Allison French, Kristi and Sean Teaster; and grandmother, Evone Williams.

A visitation will be held Friday evening, 7 until 9 p.m. at Fair Funeral Home, and at other times at her home.

Melvin Brooks

Eden - Melvin Brooks, 83, of 319 Cherry St., passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville, Va.

The son of the late John and Kate Barton Brooks, Melvin was born June 5, 1925, in Greensboro.

He was a World War II Navy and Air Force veteran. Mr. Brooks was a member of Spray United Methodist Church and a retiree of Stoneville Furniture Company. He worked many years at the "old Fuzzy's BarBQ" in Madison.

Surviving is his wife, Norma Brumbeloe Brooks of the home; son, Melvin "Scott" Brooks, of Seattle, Wash.; four step-children, Becky Shomali, of Eden, Michael Richard, of Bellevue, Wash., Cindy Pendington of Seattle, Wash., and Patrick Richard of Tokyo, Japan; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Bobby Brooks, of Eden.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, "Pete" Brooks, Charlie Brooks and John Brooks Jr.; and sisters, Mary Francis Allen and Elaine Buckner.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. today, May 24, 2009, at the Brooks home, 319 Cherry St.

Kevin Eugene Nelson

ASHEBORO — Kevin Eugene Nelson, 48, of Asheboro, N.C., and formerly of Reidsville, N.C., passed away on Friday, May 22, 2009, at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 25, in Lakeview Memorial Park.

He was a former employee of the City of Greensboro and was a truck driver for the Salvation Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl S. and Rebecca Patterson Nelson, and a brother, David Carl Nelson.

Surviving are his wife, Debra Nelson, of Randleman; two daughters, Karla Nelson Willard and husband, Blake, of Reidsville, and Katie Michelle Nelson of Reidsville; grandson, Grayson Eli Willard of Reidsville; sister, Glenda Lee Nelson, of Randleman.

The family will see friends from 7 until 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, at Citty Funeral Home, Reidsville, and at other times will be at the home of his daughter, Karla Willard, 532 Drum Road, Reidsville.

Billy Joe Sartin

REIDSVILLE — Billy Joe "Little Joe" Sartin, 43, of 3401 Ashland Road, died Wednesday evening, May 20, 2009, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, at Cherry Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Wayne Sartin and Pastor Ernest Sartin officiating. The burial will follow in the church cemetery. The pallbearers will be Ellis Sawyers, Randy McKinney, Tony Lee Walker, Jr., Jeff Butler, Eric Knowles, Timmy Sartin, Walter Ellington and Ken Mitchell.

Little Joe was born in Rockingham County.

He was a farmer and he loved working on the farm. He adored his granddaughter and his children.

He is survived by his daughters, Samantha Jo Sartin and Faith Rochelle Sartin of Reidsville and Kristen Michelle Stephens of Eden; granddaughter, Cadence Trinity Sartin; his parents, Linda Sawyers and Billy Joe Sartin, Sr.; and his sister, Ginny Sartin Mitchell and husband, Ken, of Providence.

Bernice Gann Martin

MAYODAN - Mrs. Bernice Gann Martin, 90, of 401 N. 5th Ave., Mayodan, NC, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2009, at her home.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 25, 2009, at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Austin Robertson, the Rev. Bruce Martin, the Rev. Doyle Marley, and the Rev. Kaye Munoz officiating. Interment will follow in the old Mayodan Cemetery (3rd Ave, Mayodan, NC).

Mrs. Martin was born August 7, 1918, to Jesse Franklin Gann and Maggie Maude Rakes Gann.

She was a member of the Mayodan Pentecostal Holiness Church for over seventy years and was involved in the music and teaching ministries of the church. After her retirement from Fieldcrest-Cannon, Inc, Karastan Service Center, she worked with special education students in the local school system for five years. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. Paul Martin, Sr; a son, David Farrell Martin; brothers, B. Donald Gann and Chester Gann; and sisters, Mabel Gann Joyce, Avis Gann Goins, Hilda Gann Mack and Pearl Gann Mack.

Survivors include her daughters, Gale Richardson and husband, Richard; Sherrill Marley and husband, Doyle, all of Mayodan, Kaye Munoz and husband, Manuel, of Mission, TX; son, John P. Martin, Jr. and wife, Judy, of Mayodan; seven grandchildren, Cindy Johnson and husband, Franklin, Richard (Ricky) Richardson, Jr., Joy Lewellyn and husband, Jerry, Julie Sizemore, Micah Martin and wife, Aubree, Justin Martin and David Munoz and wife, Felli; eight great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home and all other times at the residence. Reidsville - Sylvia Wilson Echols, 63, of 264 Rockingham Lake Road, died Friday, May 22, 2009, at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 25, 2009, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with the Rev. Rudy Woods officiating. The burial will follow in Evergreen Memory Gardens.

Sylvia was born in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Norman and Florence Paschal Wilson.

She was employed at Equity Meats of Reidsville and attended Oasis Baptist Church of Madison, N.C. She was very generous, kindhearted and a wonderful homemaker. Sylvia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Lawrence, Ellison, Cecil and Roger "Bud" Wilson and her sister, Dora "Sissy" Wilson.

She is survived by her husband, James Echols, of the home; sons, Mike Echols, and wife, Liz, and Paul Echols; her daughter, Cindy Echols, all of Reidsville; her grandchildren, C.J. Echols, Ashley Belton and Taylor Zbynski; her great-granddaughter, Savannah Belton; her brothers, Paul Wilson, Lonnie "Ronnie" Wilson and wife, Carolyn; her sisters, Maude Denny and husband, James, and Ruby Echols and husband, Joe, all of Reidsville; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend Mike Land.
