MAYODAN —Reginald Maxwell Alley, 84, of 103 Long Street, died Thursday, January 28, 2010, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, February 1, 2010, at Woodbine Baptist Church with Dr. Jim Crews and Dr. Arnold Cook officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery with military honors by Rockingham County Honor Guard and the N.C. National Guard.

Mr. Alley was born May 26, 1925, in Rockingham County, to the late Oscar Cecil and Margaret Martin Alley.

He graduated from Mayodan High School and was a WWII US Navy veteran. He was a member of Woodbine Baptist Church and retired from Gem Dandy, Inc. Reginald loved the Lord, his family and the church and for many years served as a Sunday School teacher, a deacon, and a member of the choir. He enjoyed helping neighbors and friends, loved visiting the nursing home residents, and will be remembered for his warming smile.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ruth Webb Alley; brothers, Paul Alley and Dallas Alley, and sister, Helen Connelly.

Mr. Alley is survived by daughters, Charlotte Alley Shelton of Martinsville, Va., and Kathy Alley Peay Everette of Madison; grandchildren, Ryan Shelton, Caroline P. Holland (T.J.), and R. Craven Peay III (Jennifer); step-grandchildren, Brad Everette (Kim), Brian Everette (Sherry); great-grandchildren Ally Shelton, Emma Kate Harrison, Aiden Shelton, Lydia Peay and Sidney Shelton; step-great-grandchildren Andrew Holland, Pattie Everette, and Lillie Everette.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Colonial Funeral Home and all other times at the residence.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to Morehead Hospital staff for their compassionate care and to their special friends who provided so much support throughout Mr. Alley's illness.

Mrs. Jane Wray Angel, age 74, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at Britthaven of Madison.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, February 7, 2010, in the chapel of Ray Funeral Home with Dr. Harry Smith and Rev. Randy Jessup officiating. Private inurnment will be at Comer’s Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was born September 25, 1935, in Rockingham County to the late Otis Wray and Elsie Gibson Wray.

She was retired from Unifi, Inc.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Jay L. “Poochie” Angel, Sr.; son, Jay L. Angel, Jr.; daughters, Kathryn Hawkins (Kenneth),all of Madison and Lisa Angel of Mayodan; brother Gwen Wray of Alameda, CA; step-mother Mae Wray; half-brother Tim Wray; half-sister Judy Lemons; granddaughter Chelsie Marie Angel and half-niece Nicole Lemons.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM, Sunday, February 7, 2010, prior to the memorial service.

William Jackson Apple Jr

REIDSVILLE — Mr. William Jackson "Jack" Apple, Jr., 67, died Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro after a brief illness.

A graveside service and burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Madison at 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 26 with the Rev. Dan Ramsey officiating.

Mr. Apple was born in Reidsville, May 9, 1942.

After graduating from Ruffin High School, he joined the U. S. Army where he served as a member of the Military Police for three years. He worked at American Can Corporation for several years before retiring from the Ball Corporation in 2004. He was known for his mechanical abilities and his love of the land, both of which kept him busy during his retirement years.

His father, William Jackson Apple, Sr., son-in-law, Michael Van Thomas, and father and mother-in-law, Alonzo Dillard "Lon" Folger, Jr. Elizabeth "Lib" McAnally Folger, preceded Mr. Apple in death.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Libby" Folger Apple; mother, Lillian Tramel Apple; daughters, Tabetha A. DeLancey and husband, Wayne of Reidsville and Lisa Thomas of Madison; brothers, Bobby C. Apple and Curtis M. Apple and wife, Linda; sister, Erlene A. Johnson and husband, Raymond; grandchildren, Caleb I. DeLancey of Reidsville, and Elyse and Clay Thomas of Madison; and sister-in-law, Jane F. Joyce and husband, Van of Greensboro.

The family will receive friends Tuesday at Colonial Funeral Home in Madison at 1 p.m. prior to the graveside service.

Rozelle Ayers Benton

Rozelle Ayers Benton, 90, formerly of Stadium Drive, passed away Thursday morning at Brian Center in Eden.

A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January 16 at Ridgeview Memorial Gardens.

Ms. Benton was born April 5, 1919 in Rockingham County, NC, daughter of the late Elisha and Bertha Martin Ayers.

She was a dedicated worker, having worked with the Rockingham County School system for almost 20 years. Ms. Benton was a retiree of Fieldcrest Mills.

Surviving are her sons, Ray Benton and wife, Judy of Ridgeway, VA, and Sam Benton and wife, Deborah of Eden; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Ronnie Benton.

LAWSONVILLE – Rhonda Duggins Bullins, 38, of 3217 NC 704 Hwy E, went to be with the Lord, Monday, January 25, 2010, at her home.

The funeral service will be held at 2 pm, Thursday, January 28, 2010, at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Rhonda was born on December 14, 1971, in Rockingham County to Dan and Rosa Joyce Duggins.

She was a member of Smith Chapel Baptist Church and a former employee of Liberty Screen Printing, Inc. She was a loving person and always had a loving smile.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Granny Lucy Joyce; a brother, Darrell Duggins; and father-in-law, Pinto Bullins.

In addition to her parents, survivors include her husband, Frank S. Bullins and son, Frank Aaron Bullins of the home; mother-in-law, Jeanie Bullins of Lawsonville; brothers, Todd (Janet) Duggins of Danbury and Keith (Wendy) Duggins of Sandy Ridge; sisters, Cheryl (Dwayne) Joyce of Danbury and Robin Butler (Darryll Martin) of Madison; nieces, Brittney Duggins, Tashia (Darren) Cobbler and Tabitha (John) Fulton; nephews, Justin (Kayla) Duggins, Matthew Duggins, Brandon Butler, Jordan Butler, and Tyler Butler.

Larry Cooper Darnell

EDEN — Larry Cooper Darnell, 58, of 302 Grant Street, passed away early Sunday morning, January 24, 2010 at his home.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 27, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Ridgeview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Rockingham County, Mr. Darnell was born March 21, 1951 in Leaksville.

He was a 1969 graduate of Morehead High School and attended UNC-Chapel Hill. He remained an avid Carolina fan. Larry attended Osborne Baptist Church and was a retiree of Dupont, Inc. More recently he was the owner and operator of a cleaning service.

Surviving is his mother, Garnet Hudson Darnell of Eden; brother, Gary Darnell and wife, Pat; nephews, Jason Darnell and wife, Brent of Greensboro and Richie Darnell and wife, Farrah of Eden; three great-nieces and two great-nephews; uncle, Edd Thompson and wife, Mary; and aunt, Maxine Hudson, all of Eden.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Darnell.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home of his brother, Gary, 1989 River Chase Drive in Eden.

Ruth Shropshire Dattero

EDEN — Ruth Shropshire Dattero, 81, of 631 Fagg Dr., passed away Monday, January 25, 2010 at Morehead Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 28, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel.

A Rockingham County native, Mrs. Dattero was born September 6, 1928, daughter of the late Bland Milton and Ethel Murphy Shropshire.

She was a retiree of Karastan Mills and was most recently employed by Chaney's Restaurant in Eden.

Surviving is her son, Jimmy Shropshire and wife, Mira of Reidsville; one grandson, Ryan Shropshire and wife, Jessica of Dover, Del.; one great-grandchild, Jaiden Shropshire, also of Dover; brother, Joseph Shropshire of Stoneville; and sister, Becky Shropshire of Eden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Dattero.

REIDSVILLE — Earley Coley Dickerson, 91, of 121 Talley Rd. Reidsville, N.C. went to be with the Lord Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the Hospice Home of Rockingham County.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday January 28, 2010 in Evergreen Memory Gardens.

A native of Rockingham County, he was the son of the late John Henry and Hallie Fulcher Dickerson and had lived in Rockingham County his entire life.

A retired farmer he was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and was preceded in death by his wife: Sylvia Hammer Dickerson and a sister: Dixie Dickerson Hall.

Surviving: Daughters: Donna D. Eanes and husband Bob, Glade Valley, Carol D. Turner and husband Wayne, Thomasville. Grandchildren: Steve McMichael and wife Tammie, David McMichael and wife Sherry, Billy Everette and wife Penny, Bryan West and wife Dawn and nine great grandchildren.

She was a native of Caswell County and a retired public school worker.

STONEVILLE- Mrs. Georgie Carter Harbour, 79, of 503 Settlement Loop passed away on Thursday morning, January 28, 2010 at her residence.

Mrs. Harbour was born in Stoneville on March 26, 1930, a daughter of Worth B. and Allie Barnes Carter, both deceased.

She was a retired beautician. She was a lifelong member of Providence Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Keith Harbour and wife Carol of Madison.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elwood Harbour and her twin sister, Maggie C. Orander.

Thelma Sands Hazelwood

EDEN — Mrs. Thelma Sands Hazelwood, 90, of 454 Ward Road passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Morehead Memorial Hospital.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 1, 2010 at Fairview Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Hazelwood Family Cemetery.

Mrs. Hazelwood was born in Stoneville on February 14, 1919, a daughter of Willie A. and Mary Roberts Sands, both deceased.

She was retired from Spray Cotton Mill. She had been a member of Fairview Baptist Church since 1964, and was a faithful Christian until the end. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Wigington of Stoneville; her sons, Rev. Thomas Lee Hazelwood and wife Dianne of Eden and Marshall Hazelwood and wife Mary of Eden; her sister, Mildred Joyce of Martinsville; her 18 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband King Marshall Hazelwood, her son, Melvin David Hazelwood, her sister, Ruby Sands and her brother, Morris Sands.

The extended family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Marshall and Mary Hazelwood for their loving and devoted care of Thelma.

EDEN — Myron "Buzz" Lee Holt, 54, of 319 Greenwood Street, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington.

A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, January 29, at Overlook Cemetery.

A native of Rockingham County, Mr. Holt was born October 5, 1955, son of the late Milton Earl and Mildred McNeely Holt.

He was employed by Fed-Ex as a route driver.

Surviving is his sister, Jean Eastwood and husband, James of the home; brother, Kenneth Holt and wife, Jean of Eden; two nieces, Mildred Hatcher and husband, Jerry and Myra Craddock and husband, Lee; two nephews, Wayne Holt and wife, Joy, and Wade Holt; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Amy and Jessica Hatcher, Casey and Jim Craddock, and Tabitha Holt.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his nephew, Mike Eastwood.

There will be no formal visitation, however the family will be meeting at the residence, 319 Greenwood Street.

Marie Thomas Linville

KERNERSVILLE - Marie Thomas Linville, 88, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, January 23, 2010.

Funeral Services celebrating her life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, at the Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Mullins officiating. Interment will follow in the Goodwill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Born August 15, 1921 in Rockingham County, she was the daughter of the late Leula Pegram and Willie Bright Thomas.

She married the late William M. Linville July 1, 1940 and was married 55 years until his death in 1995.

She was longtime member of Goodwill Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband and parents, she also was preceded in death by her daughters, Nancy Rominger and Frances Bennett; her son, Wayne Linville; her sister, Ruby Southern; and her brother, Cornelius Thomas.
At age 65, she started her very first public job at the Kernersville News. She worked in the press room for 20 years as a dedicated worker, and she worked nights or days as needed. She loved her job, and co-workers at the Kernersville News and would visit them as much as she could after her retiring at age 85. She was graciously helped by the Hospice at Forsyth before she went to be with the Lord.

She was the mother of six and is survived by three children, including her daughters, Cathy Edwards and her husband, Tony of Kernersville and Tammy Atkins and her husband, Andy of Colfax; son William Leon Linville and Betty Jo of Wallburg; sixteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; eighteen great-great-grandchildren; and four nephews; and two nieces.

The family will visit with friends from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. Alton Winfred Martin Jr

CHESAPEAKE - Alton Winfred Martin Jr., 61, of the 1200 block of AnneAve., went to be with the Lord Jan. 27, 2010 in Norfolk.

A native of Reidsville, N.C., he was the son of Alton W. Martin Sr. and the late MaryEllen Johnson Martin.

He retired as a police officer with the City ofChesapeake and was a member of Great Bridge Church of God. In hisretirement, he and his wife performed missionary work in Peru.

Pat Minor, 63, received her brand new body Wednesday morning, January 27th, at High Point Regional Hospital after a short period of declining health.

She was born in Reidsville, NC on May 16, 1946. Preceding her in death are her mother Luola Tucker Nelson and her father George Jackson Nelson.

Ms. Minor was once employed at Marsh Furniture, Craft Converters, and Anvil Brand in High Point. Even though she had been disabled for many years, she still touched the lives of many folks with just a simple phone call. There were many people whom she kept in close contact with daily just to tell them she loved them and she was praying for them. Many will miss these calls. Community Baptist Church in Trinity is where she attended faithfully before her illness.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Joe Minor, of the home; her children Billy Dean Minor and wife, Darlene, of Trinity, and Tammy Goodwin and husband, Keith, of Asheboro. Surviving sisters are Linda Byrd and husband Doug of Archdale, and Jewel Soles of Goldsboro. She had six grandchildren whom she adored, Danielle Minor, DeAnna Minor, Kenny Coe, Reba Coe, Dusty Coe, Victoria Coe, along with one great grandson, Carson Jacobs. Nieces and nephews are Jackie Barnes and husband Billy of Archdale, Daniel Byrd and wife Rayella of Randleman, Robbie Byrd of Lexington, Teresa Byrd, Michael Byrd, and Nathan Soles of Goldsboro, and three great-nieces and nephews, Jackson Barnes, Courtney Byrd and Wyatt Byrd.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Community Baptist Church, 9006 Hillsville Rd. in Trinity, with the Reverend Ty Thompson and the Reverend Doug Byrd officiating. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery in Jamestown, NC. The family will re­ceive friends Thursday eve­ning from 6 until 8 pm at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale and other times at the home of Linda and Doug Byrd.
A special thanks to the nursing staff on the 7th floor of High Point Regional Hospital, Drs. Tish Triplett, David Tarter, Jamilla Bhatti, all of Cornerstone Health Care, and the staff at the Wound Center. As a native and lifelong resident of Rockingham County, he was a retiree of Flavorich Milk Company and was a member of Garrett's Grove United Methodist Church.

Survivors are: beloved wife, Annie Blackwell Scales; one daughter, Virginia Scales; two sons, Eugene Scales, Jr. and spouse, Barbara, Ronnie Scales and spouse, Johnette; step-son, Larry Blackwell and spouse, Cathlean; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; devoted niece, Anita Graves; special friends, Ruth Purcell, Willie Lane, Douglas Stockton; other relatives and a plethora of treasured friends.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Martin officiating. The burial will follow in Reidlawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Scearce was born in Rockingham County to the late Tony and Zula Holland Doss.

She retired from Burlington Industries and was a longtime and faithful member of First Congregational Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Scearce; her sister, Hilda Loye; and her brothers, J.T. Doss and Paul Doss.

She is survived by her son, Ken Scearce and wife, Betty of Reidsville; her daughters, Nancy Fox and husband, David of Raleigh and Linda Apple of Reidsville; grandchildren, Matthew Scearce, Kristi Scearce, Tabetha DeLancey and husband, Wayne, Jennifer Harrell and husband, Chip and Kenny Fox and wife, Heather; great grandson, Caleb DeLancey; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, January 28, 2010, at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Sharpe was born February 12, 1922, in Rockingham County, to the late Thomas Dalton Griffin and Rosa Clair Holland Griffin.

She was a retired employee of the Rockingham County Department of Social Services and was a member of Lake View Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Sharpe; sons, Robert "Bob", Wayne and Garland Sharpe; brothers, Leonard and William Griffin and great-great- granddaughter, Savannah Allen.

Survivors include her daughters, Janice S. Smith (Harold), and Ann S. Griffin, all of Madison; son, Bryant Sharpe (Karen) of Westminster, SC; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Sharpe; brothers, Grady Griffin (Doris) of Reidsville, Dewey Griffin (Geraldine) of Madison, Dee Griffin (Linda) of Reidsville and Ted Griffin (Frances) of Winston Salem and sisters, Eileen Barber of Madison and Ennis Durham of Summerfield; grandchildren, Robert "Robbie" Sharpe, Jr., Kennythia Allen, Tracy Sharpe, Stacy Jackson, Shannon Bullins, Brandi Allen, Sherri Smith, Christopher Sharpe, Lincoln Griffin, Catherine Hundley, Zachary Sharpe and David Sharpe; 12 great-grandchildren and best friend, Janie Brown.
