Thanks, Comrade28. I did find Charles' death certificate, and the 1880 Census previously, but nothing to link them together as the same person; for example, I couldn't find the marriage records for Charles and Harriett, or for his parents, Lee and Roxanna. I can't find a death record for Harriett, Mary, Lee or Roxanna, or a marriage record for Charles and his second wife, Mary Osborne.
Can anyone Confirm a link between these two Charles, or should I just go with it?

Charles A Alexander was born around 1854 in NC and died in Rochingham county, NC in 1924. His father's name was listed as Lee Alexander. Charles was married Mary Elizabeth Osborne/Osborn around 1882; I am related through their youngest son, Roy, who was born in York county, SC in 1901. However, Charles had a previous wife, whom he married around 1879. I don't know her name; I found a reference to her in a federal census.

I'm looking for an obit, land deed, gravesite, marriage cert, anything. I'm interested in the first wife, any children he had with her, what happened to her, and of course Charles' parents. I haven't been able to find anything pefore 1900.

Does anyone know how the Brodnax family acquired their slaves? The plantation was bought in 1811 by William Edward Brodnax, and given to his sons, Robert and Edward Travis. Did they bring slaves down from Virginia that they already owned? Did they purchase new slaves in North Carolina?

Thanks for any leads you may have to pass along! :)

I don't think that John and Anestes are the parents of Eliza at this point. I think they are of our Oakley Clan. I find that Hannah in her application for Cherokee claims, said Eliza's parents where Williams and Anetes (it is hard to read here but it looks like Anetes last names is Lynch or French or something with a nch on the end.)
I have become suspicious of Hannah. She claims Anetes was full blooded. Hannah also at this time is applying for CSA soldier widow pension.

Delila MAY be a daughter of James Jones from Orange Co NC and his first wife Naomi Baker. James and his second wife Catherine Cheek are on the 1850 Rockingham Co NC census with several kids. James and Catherine married in 1822 in Orange and were there through 1840; they went to Rockingham before 1850. James had 11 kids with his first wife and 9 with his second wife; there were two unnamed daughters born 1816-1818, one of which may be Delila. There is no proof; I'm just working on a theory....

I'm researching Robert Gilliland who was born between 1741 & 1750 and who was on the 1790-1820 census records for Rockingham County. Some time after 1826, he moved to Union County, IN. I know that he had at least two sons, John & Josiah, and some people say that a third son was Samuel. I've also heard that he was a doctor. Where does this doctor information come from? Are there any early records available for searching in Rockingham County (besides land records which are online through the ROD)? Thanks.

The 1930 census is interesting for this family. William Woodson Waters was born in Georgia. He was about 10 years older than his wife. His parents were both from Georgia.
Ella was from NC along with her parents. Elizabeth age 2 was born in NC, Mae was age 10 born in NC, son William age 8 was born in VIRGINIA, Calvin and son James both born in NC.
In 1920 the Waters family had a stepson living with them by the name of James T. Brown age 8. In 1900 ED 81 Militia District 1073, Buncombe, Polk, Georgia, I found William Waters, son of William Waters. His siblings were Henry, Tatum and James.

Thank you for the reply. I think the Hoops came from PA, now that I am getting a better picture of this branch of my family.

It looks like my George Martin was born around 1784 (a 1850 census in Illinois has him at age 66) and was married to an Elizabeth Riddle back in Rockingham County. Possibly 3 out of his possible 5 children were born in and around there. His oldest might be Mary (b. 1805, Rockingham), then Aaron (b. 1815, Stokes), then William (b. 1816, Rockingham), next Richard (b. 1820, Rockingham). Two others were born on the trek West, Charity in Shelby Co, IN about 1826 and the last one is possibly a Wiley, born somewhere in Indiana. Mary and Wiley are assumed children based on an 1850 census of Edgar County, IL (attached).

If any of this seems to match I would greatly appreciate any information you can pass along. I know children were often named after grandparents (from both mother and father's side) so names repeat often... however, some names are just common, like "George." Until I had a hit on another descendant I was having the darnedest time searching "William Martin"! =)

I am searching for the Hill family. They migrated from the Rockingham/Guilford County area westward. John Hill (1782-1858) married a Margaret Covington (1784-1873). They were both from the area and migrated to TN. John's father was John Priar Hill of whom I don't have any information. I have read on here that he was a Baptist preacher but I have no records to substantiate that. If anyone knows about this line. Please contact me here on Ancestry.com.

Yes, Martin is a relatively common name in Rockingham Co., NC and in its western neighboring county, Stokes. An early governor, I think pre-Revolutionary - was a Martin from Rockingham Co. I think his given name was Alexander. I live in western Rockingham County. My great-grandmother was Hattie Estalla Martin. The house I live in was built by her and her husband, Robert Reid Gann, in 1910. Hattie father's name was George and she also had a brother named George. It has been a while since I looked at this lineage and I need to go back and review it. I am not familiar with any Hoop family around here. Joy Gann Brown

I see this post is a few years old... I am new to searching Rockingham Co, NC - just got the information that an Indiana farmer and his family come from here.

Any possibly relation to a WILLIAM MARTIN, b.1816? So far I gather he is the son of GEORGE MARTIN (no years on him yet) and brother Aaron, Charity, and Richard... Charity was born in Indiana, probably Richard, too (or IL) but AARON MARTIN (b Jan 25, 1824) is from Rockingham Co, NC as well. Mother is KATHERINE HOOP. They left NC in 1827, spent a little time in OH, moved on to Shelby Co, IN before settling in Edgar Co, IL. William later returned to IN by 1860 and died there in 1890 with his second wife.

Is MARTIN a common name in this county in late 1700's early 1800s?

I see this post is a few years old... I am new to searching Rockingham Co, NC - just got the information that an Indiana farmer and his family come from here.

Any possibly relation to a WILLIAM MARTIN, b.1816? So far I gather he is the son of GEORGE MARTIN (no years on him yet) and brother Aaron, Charity, and Richard... Charity was born in Indiana, probably Richard, too (or IL) but AARON MARTIN is from Rockingham Co, NC as well.

Info under the Robinson Family Tree suggests that Willoughby Lee is the father of Wm. Hezekiah Leewho came to Rockingham ca. 1809. He is listed in the 1820 census with one male child 0-10, 2 males 10-16,1 male 16-26. Hezekiah is not listed in 1830 census for N.C. or Tn. In 1840, he is living in Overton Co.,Tn. Augustine, his son, is also living there. The story was that he died in Muary Co.,Tn. in the winter of 1847/48. This was from a genealogist who could not find out what happened to the rest of his family. I am wondering if Alexander Lee who lived in AngelinaCo.in 1860-70 was Harris' brother or cousin, as they named their children similar names. Alexander moved to Dallas Co.,Ala.
Doris Lamb, hdlamb2@gmail.com
