Aren't deeds wonderful. I have identified One of the families of Bensons that came to the Mecklenburg and Rowan area. I found the 1793 deed of Thomas, Robert, Henry, Rebecca and Ann selling their father's (Thomas') property on Coddle Creek in Cabarrus County. I have him purchasing it in 1764. The deed mentions a widow but gives no name???? That would match with what Thomas his son said in his Pension Application that they moved to Rowan County area in 1762 or 1763. Based on all else I have gleaned from the records that means the Thomas, Sr. family consisted of James, Isbell, Thomas, Robert, Henry, Rebecca and Ann. James had died by then and Isbell had moved to TN with husband William "Fleabuck" Bailey. From this is would appear that either the Robert in the 1790 census was a brother of Thomas, Sr. or he was a son who was married before he married Lucy (Lovie) Hutchins.
I have made some inquiries to the Cabarrus Historical Society and the Concord Newspaper to see if they have any information on the shoot out in the Cabarrus County Courthouse in 1812 with Thomas Benson, John Wddington, and John Cress. It was interesting to note that John Benson was the first Sheriff of Concord NC in 1837.
John Kerr Benson was a shoemaker in Concord based on the deeds and information on loans in the Cabarrus County records where he pledged land he owned in Concord as collateral.
