I am searching for information on John COWAN. No dates known. He had been granted 270 acres of land on May 17, 1754, in Anson County, NC, on the north side of the Catawba River. His will was recorded in the April 1776 session of the Mecklenburg County Will Book. John's first wife's name has never been found. His second wife's name was Margaret (maiden name unknown) Childern were: John, Joseph, Hannah, William, and Mary. John's son Joseph COWAN b. abt 1758 at COWAN'S FORD, NC. Joseph's son John, Sr. b. 1787 d. 1870 married Susannah SIMS b. abt. 1799 d. 1875. Susannah was the daughter of Littleton SIMS and Hannah MITCHELL. Children were: John, Joseph, Anna, William, James, Mary, Alfred, and Hampton. John Sr's son was Joseph COWAN B. 1825 d. 1907 married Mary L. LONG b. 1830 d. 1857. She was the daughter of Thomas S. LONG and Dicy SHEMWELL. Thomas' parents were William LONG and Jane SMART. Dicy's parents were Elisha SHEMWELL and Mary MERRITT. According to family members, Joseph and Mary married in 1845 and lived in Rutherford County. Joseph and Mary's children were: Susan b. 1847, John (Jno) b.1847 , Thomas b. abt 1849 and William b. abt 1855. Joseph's son John (Jno)Cowen (this is where the spelling of Cowan changed to Cowen) b. 1847 in Bumcombe County, NC d. 1923 in Bowie County, TX. He married Virginia Jones. They had two childern, Mary Johana, and Hewett. Virginia died in her early twenties, and he married Sally Gay, then Cora ASKEW b. 1872 d. 1922. In 1900 Jno operated a post office in Spring Hill, TX. Jno. and Cora's children were: Maggie, Thomas, Susan, Madie, Vadie, Johnnie, Myrtle, and Ruby.
