thanks for that quick reply! glad you saw my post...could you tell, from your information on the Mildred Naylor in your tree, IF she lived or died in the Brunswick County, or New Hanover County area? Also, she must have been pretty old, and I am only guess, but she was probably in her mid 60's, maybe even a little older when I had her as a 1st grade teacher in the mid 1960's. So at her death, she could have been 85 yrs. old, or thereabout. Does that fit your Mildred? (What other, if any, info do you have on her?)
Thanks!!

hi, I don't have Naylors in my family--but there is one that has been dear to residents of this commuity for 2 generations, and that is Mildred B. Naylor. She may have been widowed, she surely lived, I believe, in Wilmington, N.C., but commuted every day for 30 some odd years to the "old Leland School" in Leland, N.C. That is, the OLD Leland School where we had 1st through 12th grades. Mrs. Naylor was a first grade teacher, and spanned over a generation of teaching. She taught my father, born in 1931, in HIS first grade class, and taught me, also in my first grade class in 1964. She was a beloved teacher who was revered, and so many stories abound when her name is brought up. She was a model teacher, and remembered most fondly by ALL of her students. I wish I knew more about her, who she was, other than the teacher we remember her as. I have worked in genealogy for over 40 years, and have my own tree, here, on A.com---wish I could be of help to you, but thought I'd have to at least ask while I'm here, do you know of, or have this sweet lady in your family tree? If so, please drop me a reply! I'd love knowing more about from where she came, and the answer to much speculation---"how old was Mrs. Naylor?" thanks, Don White, Leland, Brunswick County, N. C.

Hi! My name is Tami CASHWELL Lewis & I live in Stedman, NC. I hope that we are searching for the same information as I have only a family story and
a death certificate so far.

I reviewing the Sampson County records, starting with my Grandfather, I starting putting my chain together. What I found was a death certificate of my great- grandfather,
Miles Cashwell. He died in 1916 born approx. 1831. His parents are listed as Robert Fermidge Birthplace - England Mother Polly Cashwell - Sampson County.

Nancy Catherine Cain married James Franklin Cashwell. She would have been my great grandmother - Anna Cain's parents. Anna married Eddie Chevis Cashwell.
So I have a Nancy in my family tree but it was Polly Cashwell that had a child with Robert Fermidge in my tree. These are recorded facts in my family tree. Now for family story that is not widely know. Per my Uncle Joe -
he had heard a story about Mr. Fermidge whose wife became very ill & wasn't expected to live. Polly moved in to live with the family & care for his sick wife & children.
We do not know if she did die & they married - but if so the child's name was never changed as we are Cashwell's not Fermidge. This has been a big puzzle to us.
I would love any information that you might share that would help us should it turn out to be the same. As I am a parelagal, I have uncovered mistakes before
regarding the spelling. So not sure if it is Fermidge or Furmidge as I only found that one record. I have not searched on the internet yet as I am very new to ancestry.

I look forward to hearing from you! Tami Lewis

tamisporch@embarqmail.com

My husband, Lewis Gainey is a descendant through Cullen (1800-1875) and Susannah Maxwell who are buried at the Gainey Cemetery in rural Grady County, GA. Lewis' parents were the late Ralph and Julia Lewis Gainey who lived very near this cemetery. Within the last twelve years, we attended a Gainey Reunion and met a cousin named Mollie who lived in California (?) and a male cousin from England. Our oldest daughter is named Molly. The reunion was held at one of the old Gainey Homeplaces near the cemetery. One of my bucket list items is to begin researching Lewis' family trees. I have information shared by father's aunt. Please contact me if you are willing. DeLois Williams Gainey in Athens, GA. rlgdwg2001@hotmail.com 1-706-549-4631

Can Anyone Help With the Carroll's of Pitt County, NC?
I'm descended from Joshua Carroll (1770/74 - Died 1840's.) His son was Roderick Carroll (1809-80). Does anyone have any information on the Pitt County Carroll's? Many say Joshua is descended from Joseph, Son of Jesse Carroll Sr. Others say Joshua is the son of Isaac, son of Joseph, son of Jesse Sr. This can't be, and Joshua was born in the early 1770's. The only Head of House hold in Pitt 1786 and 90 census would be Isaac Carroll. All help is greatly appreciated. My father Capt. William Jennings Carroll started this for me in the late 1970's, and went to his grave not knowing. Please help.

Shurman Christopher Carroll
BA History NCWC

It seems they lived first in Sampson County, NC and then moved to Washington County, Georgia. There is also a Clarissa Hartley who married John Layton in Sampson Co., NC then moved to Washington Co. GA in 1817. My father was born in Tennille, GA. Burrell would I think be his great-great grandfather.

Sorry the only other direction I can point you in is the Joyner Library at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. They have a NC Collection department that might can assist you. A Susan Charboneau Holland at the Joyner Library helped me in the past. Sorry I no longer have her telephone number or email address. They have Superintendent of Public Instruction records going back to the 1800s. Those records may hold a key for you. One can only try.

Happy hunting.
Sueb

Thank you for your reply. I mention Halls township based on 1870/1880 Census. I lived on the Herring Farm as a child on Wyre Branch Road. The old school still stands. I talked with Kent Wrench regarding the school mention in the book and he got his information from a person I grew up with. My problem is that is the only reference in print that names the school Point Level. I am trying to find reference to Point Level School in school records, newspapers articles, etc. I have found reference to Pinehurst School. I am trying to determine if Pinehurst and Point Level School are the same, but the name got mixed up because of the church with same name. Information is coming from memory of people now in their 80's. I found school board records as early as 1886 that only name the township, district and the school board committee members. The founder of Point Level Church was on the school committee for district 11, which was in the Halls Township at that time.

Linda,
You have your communities mixed up a little. Herring Township and the old Herring School was located on Hwy 421 NORTH of Clinton. Halls Township and the old Halls School is located on Hwy 701 NORTH of Clinton. Hwy 701 north of Clinton goes toward Newton Grove. Hwy 421 north of Clinton goes toward Dunn. I couldn't find any records of a Pinehurst School but I did find ref to Point Level Grade School for African-American Students. There is mention of this school in a small book titled IMAGES OF AMERICAN SAMPSON COUNTY by Kent Wrench, Editor. A brief article states the school was located on the Wyre Branch Road in Herring Township. You might find out more info on this school by contacting David or Jeannie King at the Sampson County History Museum in Clinton, NC at 910 590-0007. The museum hours are Tues.-Sat. 10-4. You might also try contacting Kent Wrench at kwrench@intrstar.net for additional info he may have.

The Beamon Crossroads off Hwy 421 you spoke about is SOUTH of Clinton going toward Wilmington. It is not in the same general area at all.

Hope this helps.
Sueb

I am trying to find the name of a School in Halls/Herring Township near Beamon Crossroads off highway 421. Numerous people stated they attended Point Level School (Wyre Branch Road) near Point Level Church, which is on Vann Road. I have not found this name in any public document. The name Pinehurst in the Halls/Herring township is recorded, but not Point Level School. This school was for people of color (colored, negro, black and some Indians that did not meet criteria to attend Indian schools). I found one person that said the school was name Pinehurst, but about 25 that say it was name Point Level.

If you have ran across this in your research, please let me know and I would welcome anything you are willing to share with me. Thanks in advance.
