On Aug. 11, 1883, Oscar O. Pickett, in the company of one Cato Potts did break into the smokehouse of Archibald McGirt and steal and carry away some 300 lbs of bacon. The bacon was carried to the community of Keyser in Moore County where it was sold to James McDuffie. Pickett was the husband of Flora Jane Wilkes and father of Jarvis Jonathan Pickett and Ernest Wilkes Pickett. Pickett subseqently escaped the Rockingham jail.
