I double checked my records and have no record of his grave. I checked the records located at NCGENWEB for Cumberland Co. NC Genealogy, an index of graves for Big Rockfish did not have him listed.

You may find help at the Cumberland Co. main library located in downtown Fayetteville. They have a room full of books and records on mico film. They have a complete collection of the Fayetteville Observer on file, with some luck you may find his death listed.

Thank you for the information. That is the correct James E. Clark. The name is transcribed wrong and the "B" looks like "le". His wife was Emma, once again transposed wrong, so you are on the right track. I am heading down to Fayetteville next week and plan to do some looking around to see if I can find his headstone. No one in the family is alive that has any further information on him so my search has been very fruitless. All bits of information are welcome and once again thank you for taking the time to respond.

An Ele Clark is listed in the North Carolina Death Certificates which can be viewed online at Ancestry.com. He was a white male 74 years old born abt 1852 in South Carolina. Died July 26, 1926 in Hope Mills, NC. Married to Enna Clark. Buried at Big Rockfish. At that time a cemetery was located next to the Big Rockfish creek and the Big Rockfish Church Cemetery was about 1/2 mile from that location. When the first phrase of I95 south of Fayetteville was constructed, graves located at the creek were moved to the church cemetery.

you will have to contact the library from that district or a local geneology place from that area..james and mary and the last name clark are very common..I found so many .. so your best bet is to look online for the historical society for that area.. there were many plantations and slave owners there as well..

On Aug. 11, 1883, Oscar O. Pickett, in the company of one Cato Potts did break into the smokehouse of Archibald McGirt and steal and carry away some 300 lbs of bacon. The bacon was carried to the community of Keyser in Moore County where it was sold to James McDuffie. Pickett was the husband of Flora Jane Wilkes and father of Jarvis Jonathan Pickett and Ernest Wilkes Pickett. Pickett subseqently escaped the Rockingham jail. Anyone with information, please contact Sid Pickett.

Looking back at the info on Jim & Lizzie Grant, I believe Jim Grant had a sister Julia b. about 1872-73 also in South Carolina that married a Sweatt brother that followed Ellen Sweatt to Alabama. My info said Malcolm Sweatt married Julia Grant, although he may have had several wives.
My notes also showed that in family stories about Nancy Peavy, Ellen Sweat's mother was strongly believed to be Cherokee & she came from the "Rain Water Family".I did find in the 1880 Smithville, Marlboro Co, SC census that the Grants were next door to the Rainwaters and the Suetts. Perhaps your 3rd great grandmother was actually a Rainwater?
This info has all come from the Alabama Chavis/Sweat line .
I will see if I can scan some photos for you!
Cathy Chavis

Isabelle, I will talk to my father-in-law, William S Chavis( soon to be 85), who grew up in Covington Co. He is the son of John Wesley Chavis, who is the son of James W. & Ellen Sweat Chavis.Perhaps he will recall the Grants that were in Alabama.

Other small bits of info- in Oct.1904 in Marlboro Co, S.C there was a homicide- William Sweat died from an axe handle blow by Frank Sweat, after William had drawn a knife. He was the son of William K. Sweat.
Also ,in 1905 Walter Sweat, a well-to -do farmer with wife & 2 kids, was killed by Duncan Grant by a blow.
I know my James W & Ellen Sweat Chavis left S.C and followed the turpentine line. There is a definite connection with Chavis's,Sweatt's & the Grants- I think I will search in Georgia a bit!
Cathy Chavis

Cathy,

I would love to have copies of any pictures you are willing to share.

I have found the newspaper transcript you provided very interesting. It says that Aaron Sweatt's mother-in-law was the Indian.. and her name was Sarah Frances Grant Peavy.

I suspect that Sarah's mother was actually the full-blooded Indian, since I have found virtually no information on her family.. but her name was Penelope.

Sarah Frances Grant was my 3rd great grandmother.. her younger brother, Peter Grant, was my 3rd great grandfather.. and her younger sister, Harriet Grant, was another 3rd great grandmother.

Do you have any idea who Jim and Lizzie Grant were? Or how they may be related?

I cannot place Jim in my database, but the 1900 census lists him as born in May 1868. Both he and Lizzie were born in SC. And not only were Harley, Carrie and Spencer living with them, but also a Barney and Joe Grant who were listed as boarders.

This is also extremely interesting to me, because Sarah Frances Grant had a brother named Barnabas (called Barney), who died in 1865, a prisoner of the Civil War at Elmira, NY.

Barnabas did have a son named James Wesley, but he was born in 1854. He also had a daughter named Malinda in 1859.

I feel certain that these Grants are related to the Sweatts in some fashion.

Here is the information from 1900:

Jim Grant, Head, age 32, b. May 1868 in SC
Lizzie Grant, Wife, age 27, b. Oct 1872 in SC
Walter Grant, Son, age 10, b. Dec 1889 in SC
Theodore Grant, Son, age 2, b. Jul 1897 in GA
Harley Parker, Boarder/Head, age 23, b. May 1877 in SC
Carrie Parker, Wife, age 21, b. Oct 1878 in SC
Clarence W. Parker, Son, age 2, b. Feb 1898 in SC
Barney Grant, Boarder, age 22, b. Jan 1878 in SC
Joe Grant, Boarder, age 30, b. Feb 1870 in SC
Spincer Sweat, Boarder, age 24, b. Feb 1876 in SC

Jim and Lizzie Grant have been married for 10 years (ca. 1890) and Lizzie has had 4 children by 1900, though only 2 were still living.

Harley and Carrie Parker have been married for 4 years (ca. 1896) and Carrie has had 2 children by 1900, though only 1 is still living.

Barney and Joe Grant and Spencer Sweatt are all listed as single.

In addition, Alabama Deaths 1908-1974, shows that Glenn Sweatt (called Glennie) was born on 23 Oct 1907 and died on 25 June 1970 in Opp, Covington Co. AL. His parents are listed as Spence Sweat and Lola May Shaver.

It appears that Lola May Rigdon, daughter of Carrie, may have been named for Spencer's wife.

I will let you know if I uncover any other information.. but I would very much like to know if you have any idea where Jim and Lizzie Grant fit into this family.

Isabelle
Yes, John and Spencer Sweatt did move to Covington Co., Alabama. The living grandchildren of Ellen Sweatt remember Make( Malcom), Spence,Carrie ,John and Charlie. Chavis about 1886 in South Carolina and moved to Alabama with 5 children that were born in Marlboro Co.
John Wesley b 1886 (this is my husband's grandfather)
Minnie b.abt 1888
Willie Roland b.1891
George H b. abt 1894
Bessie b.abt 1896
and,
Charles b.abt 1902 in Alabama died in 1915

Also, there was a letter posted in the Andalusia Star News
on Sept. 26,1911. It was an Interest Notice " to whom it may concern to certify that we have known the Sweatt family for a number of years and find by tracing history and our own observation that they are originally from France on their father's side, on mother's side from Old Holland. The late A. Sweatt, father of Charles P. Sweatt, married a lady whose mother was of Indian blood. We can truthfully recommend this family as being all right in every respect." signed by citizens of Marlboro Co, State of South Carolina, certify we have known Sweatt for years.
Oct 22, 1907
CP Townsend, JB Green, Sheriff Milton M.Laurin, Judge of Probate; Nb Rogers, Treasurer; JA Drake, Clerk; Julian M Laurin, Deputy Clerk; MB Coward

An interesting letter to put in the newspaper! So, at some point it appears that Charles P. was also in Covington Co.
Malcom( Make) was also around for a while.
I have copies of photos of Ellen Sweat Chavis's family if anyone is interested-she is in one of them. I may try to scan them!
Cathy Chavis

Sherry,

The siblings of Ellen that followed her to Alabama were Aaron John Sweatt, Jr. (who went by John) and Spencer P. Sweatt. Those are the ones I know of.

John Sweatt died on 3 September 1956 in Opp, Covington Co. AL.
Spencer Sweatt died on 17 March 1953 in Opp, Covington Co. AL.

Of the other siblings: Elbert died in SC; Charles Peavy Sweatt died on 28 August 1940 in Smithville, Marlboro Co. SC; James Arnold Sweatt was in SC at least until 1910; and Malcolm L. Sweatt died on 27 May 1955 in Lockhart, Union Co. SC.

I don't know about Sarah or Carrie Sweatt, and there was another daughter, who I only know as M. A. Sweatt. She apparently died before 1880, because she is no longer in the census after 1870.

Hope this helps :)

Hi Cathy,
Elbert stayed in Marlboro Co., SC and raised his family there. He was married to a Sallie/Sally Cole, but I can't find anything else about her or her family.
Do you know the names of the siblings of Elbert and Ellen who moved from South Carolina to Alabama? Would appreciate this info.

Thanks,
Sherry

You are correct. Doing this late at night is not productive! Benjamin and Rosa would have been her grandparents. Did Elbert come to Alabama or stay in South Carolina?
Cathy

Hi Cathy,
I thought Ellen Sweat, b. 1862, was the daughter of Aaron Sweat and Nancy Peavy. Aaron was the son of Benjamin and Rosa Sweatt.
Ellen was the sister to my ggrandfather, Elbert Sweat, b. 1854 in SC.
Is this the Ellen to which you are referring?

Sherry

Hi,
Ellen Sweatt b.1862, daughter of Benjamin & Rosa, was my husband's ggrandmother. She married a James W Chavis( sometimes went by JW or John) and moved to Coffee Co, Alabama , then Covington Co Alabama by 1900. All their children were born in S.C. I can not find this Chavis line- but has to be around the Marlboro Co area close to Ellen E Sweatt . Any info on her marriage to James W Chavis? Several of Ellen's siblings followed her to Alabama.
Thanks!
Cathy Chavis
