LAWSONVILLE - Mr. Gilmer Watson Mabe, 83, died Saturday, October 4, 2008 at his residence.
He was born in Stokes County July 30, 1925 to Noel and Lettie Shelton Mabe.
He loved working on his farm, caring for his cows, fishing and wood working while he was able. He was a farmer all his life. Gilmer was highly respected in his community. He helped organize the Lawsonville Volunteer Fire Department and was Chief on two different occasions. He was also a charter member of the Lawsonville Ruritan Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Bonnie Mabe; and his son, Steve Mabe.
He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Doris M. Mabe; children, Dawn (Richard) Smith, Danny (Teresa) Mabe, Tina (Wayne) Moore, all of Lawsonville, and Tim Mabe of Mt. Airy; and daughter-in-law, Charlotte Scott of Danbury; sisters, Mildred (Bill) Maupin, Iris (Glen) Roberson, Arlene (Bill) Fulp, Shirley (Lloyd) Sheppard, Pat (Randy) Bennett, and Dot Slate; brothers, Delmar (Virginia) Mabe, Raymond (Joann) Mabe, Morris (Doris) Mabe, and Akers (Jane) Mabe; grandchildren, Marsha (Jason) Sizemore, Erica (Scotty) Marshall, April (Sonny) Hedrick, Jessica (Dusty) Moricle, Steven Mabe, Joshua, Leslie, and Luke Moore, Nicole Clark, Grey (Stephanie) Smith, and Misty (Dustin) Felde; great-grandchildren, Lorin and Evan Sizemore, Hannah Marshall, Taylor and Tara Smith, Austin, Kyle and Jake Felde; sisters-in-law, Shelby (Louis) Fagg, Annie Ruth Greene, Ruby Crews, and Sarah (William) Alley; brothers-in-law, Charles (Hilda Gray) Matthews, Larry (Gail) Matthews, and many nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 6, 2008 in Peters Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Ragsdale, Rev. Eugene Payne and Elder Scotty Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. this evening, Sunday, October 5, at Peters Creek Baptist Church. The family requests memorials be made to Hospice of Stokes County, PO Box 10, Danbury, NC 27016, or to Peters Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 6561 Hwy. 8 N., Lawsonville, NC 27022. "The family would like to extend special thanks to Hospice of Stokes County and especially to Beth, Lisa, April, Jessica, and Lori. Also, special thanks to Charles Nelson and Randy McHone."
