GERMANTON - Mrs. Lennis Flinchum Banner, 92, died Friday, March 5, 2010 at Rose Tara Plantation in King.

An 11 a.m. Graveside Service will be held Monday, March 8, 2010 at Germanton Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Lattimore and the Rev. Justin Jones officiating.

She was born August 23, 1917 in Stokes County to Ham McCormick and Lillian Moorefield Flinchum.

She was a member of Germanton Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Durward "Dick" Banner in 2004; three brothers and sister-in-law, Jack (Faith) Flinchum, Arthur Flinchum and Leon "Shorty" Flinchum; and three sisters and brothers-in-law: Hazel (Jake) Weatherman, India (Tom) Joyce and Dolly (James) Pender.

She is survived by two children: Peggy Humphries and Randy Banner and wife, Debbie, both of Germanton; three grandchildren: Lisa Nelson and husband, Roman, Sr., Grey Humphries and wife, Jane, Byron Banner and wife, Michelle; eight great-grandchildren, Sidney, Logan and Mitchell Hampton, Garet and Rachel Humphries, Eli and Ethan Banner and Roman Nelson, Jr., two sisters-in-law, Josephine Flinchum and Marlene Flinchum of Winston-Salem; brother-in-law, Lawrence Banner and wife, Nancy of Germanton and good friends and neighbors, Donnie and Connie Bullins.

Special Thanks to all the staff at Rose Tara Plantation and Stokes County Hospice. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Sunday, March 7, 2010 at Burroughs Funeral Home. Otis Carter

RIDGEWAY, VA. — Otis “BoCat” Carter, 89, died March 3, 2010.

He was a native of Stokes County and was a retired farmer.

Surviving are two daughters, Rosa “Top” Brown of Ridgeway and Mary E. “Lin” Redmond of Reidsville; two grandchildren; and several other relatives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Perry-Spencer Memorial Chapel in Eden, N.C. Burial will be in Davis P.P. Baptist Church cemetery in Madison, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home

Floyd Thomas Cromer

WINSTON-SALEM Mr. Floyd "Pete" Thomas Cromer, 93, died Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Forsyth Medical Center.

Mr. Cromer was born April 24, 1916, in Stokes County to Wilbur Franklin Cromer, Sr. and Phoebe Kiser Cromer.

He was a charter and faithful member of Trinity Christian Church in Winston-Salem. Mr. Cromer served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was the lead singer in the Vagabond Quartet (Barbershop singing). In 1952, the Vagabond Quartet was the Dixie District Champs and the finalists in the International Championships in 1951-52. He was a member of the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; fourteen sisters and brothers; and a daughter, Jettie Lee Cromer.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Thomas Cromer, of the home; his children: Dawn Hauser and husband, Dale, Nancy McAlexander and husband, Gary, and Eric Stephens and wife, Phyllis; his five grandchildren: Seth and Alex Hauser, Heather Williams and husband, Patrick, Stephanie Martin, Derek Stephens and wife, Brandie; and his three great-grandchildren: Henry Williams, Gracie Martin and Mason Stephens. In addition he is survived by two sisters: Georgia Young and Evelyn Fulp; and several nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2010 at Salem Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Keith Marisden and the Rev. David Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The family will receive friends from 10 - 10:45 a.m. prior to the Service. LEXINGTON — Erlean Davis Crotts, age 97 of Carolina House, formerly of Delta Street, Lexington passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010.

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Clyde Akers officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday night and at other times at the home of her daughter, 328 Northside Drive, Lexington.

Mrs. Crotts was born in Stokes County to Frank Edgar Davis and Kate Berry Davis.

She was a retired employee of Frank IX and Sons and a member of Second United Church of Christ.
She loved the outdoors, working in the garden or planting flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Curtis Lee Crotts, Sr.; brothers, Royal, Woodrow, Garland and Carl Davis; sisters, Thelma Staley, Pearl Tysinger and Hazel Freeman.

Surviving are: one daughter, Cornelia Coble of Lexington; one son, Curtis Lee Crotts, Jr. and wife Vickey of Lexington; four grandchildren, Rob and Randal Lloyd, Jennifer Nikouyeh and Crystal Crotts; four great-grandchildren; fours sisters, Mabel Kiser and Juanita Davis of Asheboro, Annie Kate Williams of Ramseur and Olivera Williams of Randleman; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Delene Hope Fain Curry

Mrs. Delene Hope Fain Curry, age 49 of Stuart, passed away Friday, March 5, 2010 as the results of an automobile accident in Patrick County.

She was born on September 21, 1960 in Danbury, North Carolina.

Mrs. Curry is preceded in death by her mother, Paula Juanita McPeak Fain.

She had worked at Results in Stuart, and attended Stuart United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Curry is survived by her husband, Howard Barry Curry of the home; her father, Clayton Fain of Stuart; two sisters, Dreama Jane Fitzgerald of Stuart and Paulette Anita Hodges of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina; two nephews and one niece.

A graveside memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Stuart Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Moore officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at Stuart United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Delene Curry Burial Fund, c/o Moody Funeral Home, P.O. Georgia Willie Dalton

WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Georgia Willie Dalton, 91, passed away, Sunday, March 7, 2010.

She was a native of Stokes County, a member of Withers Chapel United Methodist Church and a retired employee of RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. (Brook Cove),

She is survived by a son, George W. Dalton of the home, two daughters, Lula F. "Faye" Latnel of Winston-Salem, Eleanor Williams (Michael) of Mooresville, ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 12 Noon, Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Withers Chapel United Methodist Church, in Belews Creek, burial will be in the church cemetery. Ronald Isaiah Montgomery

WINSTON-SALEM - Ronald Isaiah Montgomery, 61, died Tuesday evening, March 9, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center.

He was born in Stokes County on November, 17, 1948 to William Chester and Edith Lizabeth Merritt Montgomery.

He was owner/ operator of Legends Hair Salon for 5 years, has been in the hair industry for 40 years, won numerous trophies for cutting hair and was the best hair cutter in the city. He was an awesome person with so many friends. Ronnie had a passion for playing golf and had played at various locations around the country. But his real passion was his son. He was an honest man and was loved by all who knew him. He served his country proudly in the US Army.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m, March 13, 2010 at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Lovette officiating. Burial will follow in the Bowman Family Cemetery with military honors.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law; Kenneth G. White. He is survived by his wife of 26 years; Kathryn Friedman Montgomery and one son; Jacob Montgomery of the home, father; Rev. W.C. "Check" Montgomery of Germanton, one sister; Dell White of Walnut Cove, one brother; Jerry Montgomery of Germanton and several nieces and nephews.

John Braxton Merritt

WALNUT COVE - Mr. John Braxton Merritt , 95, died Friday, March 5, 2010 at Walnut Cove Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born November 29, 1914 in Forsyth County to Gray Grover Merritt, Sr. and Belle Krause Merritt.

He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Germanton High School and was a farmer. A Graveside Service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Red Bank Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Riggs officiating.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Margaret Carroll, Catherine Belda and Helen Williams; and three brothers: H. Shirley Merritt, Roger W. Merritt and Gray G. Merritt, Jr.

He is survived by one sister, Josephine M. Fowler of Winston-Salem; and sixteen nieces and nephews: Lewis Carroll, Cecelia Wyatt, Krista Welder, Don Wagoner, Nancy Wall, Craig Belda, Yvonne Rutledge, Karen Coley, Jeannie Boyles, Roger Merritt, Jr., Paula Holbrook, Kathy Robinson, Johnny Merritt, Amanda Dull, Richard Williams and Ellen Griffith.

Mollie Slate Moser

WESTFIELD - Ms. Mollie Slate Moser, age 97, of Mount Airy, passed away on March 5, 2010 at Dallas King Road, Westfield, NC.

Ms. Moser was born in Stokes County on December 10, 1912 to the late Peter and Mary Hendricks Slate.

Ms. Moser worked for Barbers Hosiery Mill and was a member of Union Hill Friends Church.

Ms. Moser is survived by her daughter Faye M. King of Westfield, one granddaughter; Cindy (Jimmy) Boyles of Mount Airy; one great-granddaughter Ashton Boyles.

Ms. Moser was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Charlie Slate, Plato Slate, Hardin Slate; five sisters, Edith Bradley, Francis Owens, Jennie Harrison, Effie Sexton, Alma Goins.

Larry Arnold Oakley

MADISON — Retired Master Sgt. Larry Arnold Oakley, 69, of 10781 NC 704 Hwy., died Monday, March 8, 2010 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Rev./Dr. Ronnie Chaney officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Oakley was born September 5, 1940 in Stokes County to the late William Fletcher and Lou Bera Joyce Oakley.

He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He served twenty years in the United States Air Force, is a Vietnam Veteran, and after his military service he worked for the Town of Stoneville where he retired from Waste Water Management. In addition, he worked part time for the Stoneville Police Department. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and brother.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Wade and Billy, and a grandson, Doug.

Survivors include a son, John (Jackie) Oakley of Greensboro; a daughter Gaye (Garry) Wood of Madison; sisters, Shirley Moorefield, Jean (Billy) Plummer, and Sharon Reid, all of Madison; four grandchildren, Shannon Oakley, Garrett Wood, Jordan Oakley, and Lora Wood.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel and other times at the residence.

Oleas Goin Rodgers

Oleas Goin Rodgers, 78, of 198 Wickersham Drive, Ridgeway, died Monday, March 8, 2010, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

She was born in Stokes County, N.C., on Nov. 20, 1931, to Grover Lee and Mary Beasley Goin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde William Rodgers; and a brother, James Weldon Goin.

She had worked for DuPont.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ridgeway and Martinsville Chapter No. 66, Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are two children, Debra Mathena of Rocky Mount and Barry D. Rodgers of Ridgeway; a sister, Judy Faye Martin of Axton; a brother, Phillip Donald Goin of Martinsville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville with the Rev. Eugene Chitwood officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home in Ridgeway.

Lillian Lawson Sizemore

MAYODAN — Mrs. Lillian Lawson Sizemore, 90, of 110 W. Washington Street, went home to be with her Lord and reunited with her loved ones on Friday, March 5, 2010.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, March 8, 2010, at First Baptist Church of Mayodan, of which she was a member, with Reverend Randy Jessup and Reverend T.J. Easter officiating. Burial will follow at Mayodan Municipal Cemetery.

Lillian was born on August 4, 1919, in Stokes County to the late Elijah Lee Lawson and Jennie McHone Lawson.

She was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, four brothers and her husband, Guy Sizemore.

She is survived by her three daughters, Darlene Easter, Kathy Martin (Joe), both of Madison and Mary Prevatte (Larry) of Birmingham, Ala.; grandchildren, Danielle M. Gilbride, Alisha P. Brunson, Stephen Prevatte, Wesley Easter, Lisa Collins; great-grandchildren, Sean Gilbride, Mackenzie Gilbride, William Marshall Easter, Lindsay Easter, and Kyle Collins.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Ray Funeral Home and all other times at her residence.

Elmer Sanford Tilley

LAWSONVILLE - Mr. Elmer Sanford Tilley, age 73, of Lawsonville, husband of Bertie Donathan Tilley, passed away on Friday, March 5, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center.

Mr. Tilley was born in Stokes County on June 20, 1936 to the late Huff and Delia Tilley.

Mr. Tilley was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and East Coast Leasing Inc. and was attending Lawsonville Church of God.

Mr. Tilley is survived by nine children and their spouses: Ronnie (Dianne) Tilley of Westfield, Timmy (Amanda) Tilley of Lawsonville, Billy Tilley of Lawsonville, Teddy (Carol) Tilley of Lawsonville, Lynn (Allan) Nowak of Apex, NC, Gale (Rocky) Moore of Lawsonville, Joey (Angie) Tilley of Westfield, Crystal (J.H.) Bowman of Lawsonville, and Rebecca (Johnny) Fain of Westfield: 20 grandchildren: Michele (Eric) and Dena (Joey) Mabe, Stacey (Billy), McKenzie, Abby and Ethan Tilley, Bradley and Austin Tilley, Josh (Laura) and Holly (Ron) Nowak, Jessica (Andrew) Bennett, Jared Moore, Corey and Kaitlyn Tilley, Tyler, Jayden, and Addison Bowman, Trinity and Tristan Fain; nine great-grandchildren: Savannah, Corbin, Logan, Lilly, Treyson, Aleah, Haley, Blake, Justin; and one brother William Brady Tilley of Madison.

Preceding him in death are his parents; two brothers, Carl Tilley and Zane Tilley; one sister, Grace Arms; and two granddaughters, Shawn Tilley and Angel Bowman.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 8, 2010 at Asbury Pentecostal Holiness Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Wesley Flippin, the Rev. Ricky Brewer, the Rev. Leonard Young

GERMANTON - Mr. Leonard "Bubby" Young, 69, died Monday, March 8, 2010 after a brief illness.

He was born September 22, 1940 in Stokes County to John Willie and Juanita Lee East Young.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brother, Harold Young and infant brother, Bobby Lee Young.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Lawson Young of the home, and a son and daughter-in-law, Leonard Ray and Stephanie Young of Westfield.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 10, at Slate Funeral Home in King, with Elder Rodney Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in the East Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, P. O. Box 863, Walnut Cove, NC 27052.

Mattie Opal Morton Young

GERMANTON - Mrs. Mattie Opal Morton Young, 85, died Friday, March 5, 2010 at Liberty Commons Nursing Center in Salisbury.

She was born May 8, 1924 in Stokes County to James Peter and Vesta Martin Morton.

She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Rural Hall and was a 1941 graduate of Pine Hall High School. Mrs Young was retired from the Stokes County School System after 13 years of service.

She married Grover Cleveland Young in December, 1946.

A 2:30 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ed Sears officiating. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Grover Cleveland Young in 2003; two sisters; and one brother.

She is survived by three children, Golda Harrington and husband, Mike of Salisbury, Cheryl Wolfe and husband, Jim of Elkin and G. Vincent Young and wife, Kim of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren, Rachel Harrington, Dana Harrington and Trent (Evelyn) Harrington, Meredith (Robby) Shaw, Mary Kathryn Evanoff, Taylor (Michelle) Wolfe, Joshua Young and Julie (Chris) Stone; five great-grandchildren, Taylor, Tara and Heather Shaw and Hayden and Hunter Wolfe; one brother, Harold "Zack" Morton and wife, Vera of Madison.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 7, 2010 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burroughs Funeral Home of Walnut Cove is serving the Young family.
