Obituary - Mattie Shelton Flippin

GREENSBORO — Mrs. Mattie Shelton Flippin, 83, of Greensboro died at Carriage House Assisted Living on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 6:57 pm.

A native of Surry County, she was the wife of the late Charles Louis Flippin, Sr. and the daughter of John Quincy Shelton and Maulde Goad Shelton, both deceased. She was a former bookkeeper for Greens Fuel Gas Company now Piedmont Natural Gas Company for approximately 15 years. Mattie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Graham where she had been active and loved the kids of the church nursery. She enjoyed playing Bridge with her girlfriends, gardening and loved entertaining friends and her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Janet Flippin of Houston, TX; a son, Charles Louis Flippin, Jr. and wife Karen of Greensboro; two granddaughters, Rachel Heard and Allison Heard, both of Houston, TX; two grandsons, Reid Flippin and Troy Flippin, both of Greensboro; and a brother, Frank Shelton and wife Lisa of Mt. Airy. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Grady Shelton, J. Q. Shelton, Jr. and Charlie Shelton.

The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory in Graham on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 5 pm until 7 pm.

A graveside service will be conducted at Oakdale Cemetery, Mt. Airy, NC on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 2 pm by the Rev. Bailey Nelson with the family also receiving friends from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm prior to the service at the Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Graham, 224 North Main Street, Graham, NC 27253 or Westover Church, 505 Muirs Chapel Road, Greensboro, NC 27410 or Greensboro Hospice and Palliative Care, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.

The family would like to thank the Memory Care and Assisted Living staff at the Carriage House for their dedicated and loving service to Mattie.
