Elkin - Mrs. Dorothy Barker Adams, age 85, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Villages of Wilkes.

Mrs. Adams was born May 5, 1924 in Wilkes County to Thomas and Mollie Wilmoth Barker.

She was a homemaker and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Jessie Monroe Adams, daughter Doris Jean Adams, and two great grandsons Justin Osborne and Andrew Adams.

Survivors include sons Thomas Adams and wife Debbie of Ronda, Roger Adams and wife Bobbie of West Jefferson and Johnny Adams and wife Sandra of Ronda, daughter Betty Couch and husband Lanny of Elkin, brothers Gaither Barker and wife Carol of Elkin and Walter Barker and wife Carol of Ronda, sisters Edna Soots and husband Jobie of Ronda, Hallie Soots and husband Paul of Ronda, and Helen Stroud of Ronda, eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in Macedonia Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at the church.
The family will accept flowers or memorials may be made to Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1120 Austin-Little Mtn. Road, Ronda, NC 28670.

Alma Louise Welch Breeden

MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Alma Louise Welch Breeden, 91 of Ridgecrest Lane, Mt. Airy died at Northern Hospital of Surry County Saturday, January 30, 2010 after a brief illness.

She was born in Mt. Airy on September 7, 1918 to the late Walter Presley and Lula McGee Welch.

She graduated from Mt. Airy High School and attended Appalachian College. She married the late Claude Mebane Breeden on August 10, 1941. They were married 55 years and lived in Raleigh and in Southern Pines where she worked in the business office of Moore County Hospital. They retired to Mt. Airy in 1982. She was a member of the Mt. Airy Friends Meeting.

She is survived by her son David Pritchett Breeden and his wife Phyllis of Laurinburg, NC; a grandson Jonathan David Breeden and wife Beth of Garner, NC; a granddaughter Jessica B. Moran and husband Jon of Raleigh; great grandchildren, Mary Claire Moran and David Ross Breeden; a sister, Helen Gardner Hutchens of Mt. Airy and a sister-in-law, Mary S. Welch of Kathleen, GA.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Breeden was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Clara Belle and Evan Charles Brown and a brother, Walter McGee (Giggi) Welch.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held in the club room of Ridgecrest Retirement and Assisted Living Community, 1000 Ridgecrest Lane, Mt. Airy Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 1:30 PM by Dr. Jon Cawley. Interment will be at Oakdale Cemetery prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Mt. Airy Friends, 109 W. Wilson St. Mt. Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Home will be assisting the Breeden Family.

Susan Denise Goins Peele Dillon

MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Susan Denise Goins Peele Dillon, 43, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2010, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.

Mrs. Dillon was born September 26, 1966, in Surry County, to the late Samuel Harrison and Ruth Fulla Haynes Goins.

She worked at Mount Airy Oil Company as long as her health permitted.

Mrs. Dillon is survived by her husband, Richard Dillon of the home; a son, Justin Andrew Peele of the home; her parents, Samuel Harrison and Ruth Fulla Haynes Goins of Mount Airy; and a brother, Danny Bateman of Mount Airy.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, February 4, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Sam Holder officiating. Willie Mozelle Dodson Essick

KING - Mrs. Willie Mozelle Dodson Essick, age 89 of King, born in Surry County on February 6, 1920, to Robert (Bob) and Quillie Tucker Dodson, went home to be with her Lord January 28, 2010.

She was a member of Community Church of Christ in Pilot Mountain.

Though we will miss her dearly, she longed to go home where her parents and her husband Charlie Reedy Essick had gone before. She was also preceded in death by one stepson, Samuel Wilson Essick; four brothers, Arch, Burk, Frank and Henry; three sisters, Emma Wilmoth, Rachael McNeil and Mary Sams; one grandson, Jeffrey Essick and one granddaughter Pam Wood..

Surviving are four sons, Paul Ray and wife Amy, Charlie Billy and wife Sally, Junior Reedy "JR" and wife Shelby, and Ralph Thomas and wife Becky; one daughter, Linda White and husband Wayne; fourteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; one great great grandson; and one sister Pauline Vaughn.

Mozelle was a devoted mother and grandmother and nothing made her happier than being surrounded by her family. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at Slate Funeral Home in King. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, at First Christian Church in King by Ministers Mark Essick, Larry Hatfield and Kenneth Smith. Burial will follow at the Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The family extends deep gratitude to all the workers who took loving care of (Mo) at Village Care of King and to the staffs of Forsyth Medical Center and the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for the care and comfort given to Mother and to the Family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Kate B. Edward Edgar Felts

HAMPTONVILLE - Edward Edgar Felts, 94, of Hamptonville died Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Palliative Care at Hoots Hospital.

He was born in Surry County, NC on December 25, 1915 and was the son of the late Will and Emmaline Payne Felts and was retired from Yadkin County Cooperative Extension Service.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February, 2, 2010 from Mackie-Sinclair Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Bell officiating. Burial will follow in the Yadkin Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his son, Timothy Felts of Hamptonville; a daughter, Susie Wells of Hamptonville; a brother; Warren Felts of Yadkinville; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mr. Felts was preceded in death by his wife, Etta Felts; a brother, Sammy Felts; and a grandson, Tony Felts.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, February 1, 2010 at the funeral home and other times at his son's home. Samuel Bailey Glenn Jr

WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. Samuel Bailey Glenn, Jr., 80, passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 26, 2010.

Bailey was born May 19, 1929 in Mount Airy, NC to Samuel B. Glenn, Sr. and Nell Folger Glenn.

He graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1946 and attended Duke University and played on the golf team, winners of the Southern Conference in 1948 and 1949 and NCAA Championship participants. After graduating Duke in 1950 he served in the U.S. Army. He became head professional at Roaring Gap Club in 1956 and enjoyed the position until 1993. Bailey was proud to have been a lifelong member of the PGA of America, and that he competed in Carolinas PGA events spanning six decades from the 1950's to 2000.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Stevens Glenn; his children, William B. Glenn and Kathryn Glenn Allred of Winston-Salem, Mary Frances Marshall of Carrboro, NC, John Folger Glenn of Florence, SC; grandchildren: Dax Allred, William Allred, Amelie Glenn, Cerre' Glenn, Sam Marshall, Jack Marshall, Henry Marshall, Bailey Kate Glenn; and step-grandchildren: Jessica Speer and Jack Speer. Other survivors are loving first cousins, Fred Folger and Barbara Folger Chatham.

A family Graveside Service was held on Thursday, January 28, at Forsyth Memorial Park. Bailey and the family express their deepest appreciation to friends, health care, and hospice personnel for support and care provided. The family passes along Bailey's request, that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Hospice & Palliative Care of Winston-Salem, and Brenners Children's Hospital. Lillie Marie Riggs Godfrey

Mrs. Lillie Marie Riggs Godfrey, age 84 of Mt Airy passed away at Central Continuing Care on Friday, February 5, 2010.

Mrs. Godfrey was born in Surry County on September 4, 1925 to the late Fletcher Banard and Rosa Childress Riggs.

She worked at Mt. Airy Hosiery Mill and Spencer’s for many years. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church and attended as long as her health permitted.

She is survived by two sons, Donnie and Danny Riggs, both of Mt. Airy; stepdaughter, Marion Strickland of Greensboro; stepson, Danny Godfrey of Greensboro and a grandson, Kaleb Kristopher Riggs of Mt. Airy and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Godfrey was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Godfrey; sisters, Hazel Williams, Mary Bett Riggs and Annie Riggs; brothers, Dewey and Archie Riggs.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, February 8, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Midkiff Family Cemetery. LOWGAP — Mr. Joshua Bradley “Josh” Hawks age 28 of 196 Watershed Road, Lowgap, NC passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010.

He was born July 20, 1981 in Forsyth County, NC to Charles Clyde and Diane Johnson Hawks.

He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Mercedes Brianna Hawks, Mt. Airy, a son, Josh Blake Hawks, Mt. Airy, his parents, Charles Clyde and Diane Johnson Hawks, Lowgap, a sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Christopher Lowe, Lowgap, a brother Jamie Hawks, Lowgap, two nephews, Dakota Lowe, Lowgap, Logan Hawks-Muncy, Bland, VA, grandmother, Orene Hawks, Lowgap, Sylvia and Arlis Williams, Thurmond, Bert and Anita Johnson, Burnsville, MN, and great grandmother, Ethel Hawks Cave, Lowgap, and a great grandfather, Van Pierce, Wilmington.

Mr. Hawks was preceded in death by his grandfather, Junior Clyde “Blackie” Hawks.

Mary Satterfield Jarvis

MOUNT AIRY — Mary Satterfield Jarvis was born Feb. 8, 1917, to the late Dave and Mallie Satterfield. She was one of four children born to that union.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Elder James and Edmond Satterfield. She also had a half brother, Claymon Davis.

Mary married Walter L. Jarvis on Dec. 25, 1939, in Galax, Va. To that union was born one son, Walter L. Jarvis Jr.

Mary went home to be with her Lord at Golden Living Nursing Home on Jan. 30, 2010, after a long illness. In 1938, Mary, her sister and one other, were the first black graduates of the J.J. Jones High School. Mary was a very proud woman and pristine in her attire. Her home was immaculately kept. She was a member of Ararat Missionary Baptist Church, where she “always helped in the kitchen.” She was a wonderful cook; although, she declared that she was not.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband of 70 years, Walter L. Jarvis Sr. of the home; her son, Walter L. Jarvis Jr. and Donna of Adelphi, Md.; sister, Essie Satterfield Joyce of Rock Hill, S.C.; her grandchildren, Marie J. and Donnie Nicholson of Mount Airy, Marcy Jarvis of Greensboro, Carla Jarvis of Castro Valley, Calif., Walter L. Jarvis III and Tammy of Surprise, Ariz., Lisa Davis of Modesto, Calif., Scott and Morgan Davis of Topka, Kan., and Kelly Davis of Adelphi; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will cherish her memory as well.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Ararat Missionary Baptist Church, 211 Jones School Road, Mount Airy. The Rev. Walter L. Jarvis Jr. will be the eulogist, and burial will follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens, Mount Airy. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Edward J. Spencer and Pattie J. Spencer Memorial Chapel, Mount Airy. Spencer Funeral Directors are in charge of all services and arrangements.

Sarah Rosa Lee Crabb Johnson, age 70, of State Road, NC went home to be with her Lord, Sunday, January 31, 2010, at her home surrounded by family and friends.

She was born September 7, 1939 in State Road, a daughter of the late Barney and Pearl Walker Crabb.

She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church of State Road. She was former nurse’s aide and was always thinking of others before herself.

She is survived by her daughter, Lethia Johnson of State Road, and fiancé Dale DeVaughn of Dobson, son Darrell Johnson and wife Diane of Jonesville, three sisters, Virginia Ashburn and Ruby Crouse of State Road, Ruth Hamm of Jefferson, one brother, Vaughn “Buster” Crabb of High Point, and she leaves to cherish her memory very special friends, Jack and Jean Miller of Mt. Park, and Joan Haynes of Jonesville.

In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, W. Austin Johnson in 1992.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 a.m., February 3, 2010 at Pleasant View Baptist Church , by Rev. Kenny Wood. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Minnie Lee Laster, 92 of State Road, passed away Friday, January 29, 2010 at Heritage Health Care in Elkin.

Mrs. Laster was born October 25, 1917 in Davie County to William Beal and Mary Ella Nichols Bailey.

She was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Laster was preceded in death by her husband, Roby Howard Laster and a sister, Lodena Boger.

She is survived by a son, Howard Laster & wife Francis of State Road; a daughter, Margaret Jones of State Road; two sisters, Ruth Foster of Mocksville and Margaret Lefler of Coolimee; two grandchildren, Tim Craig and Roby Jones; four great grandchildren, Kinslee Craig, Laken Craig, Jasmine Jones, and Roby Ray Jones II; a brother-in-law, D.L. Boger of Kanapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, February 4, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Kramm and Rev. Bud Wishon officiating. Ricky Dean Linville

DOBSON — Mr. Ricky Dean Linville, 52, of Dobson passed away on Saturday January 30, 2010 at Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home after an extended illness.

He was born in Surry County on January 10, 1958 to the late Berry Odell and Hattie Montgomery Linville.

Mr. Linville was a self employed installer for R&L Hardwood Flooring and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his loving wife of twenty eight years, Linda Hart Linville of the home; a daughter and son-in-law Dawn Marie and Jesus Cuevas Reyes of Charlotte; a son and daughter-in-law Donald Jeramiah and Jill Hodgins Druck of Boonville; six grandchildren Mario Alberto Reyes, Ricardo Jesus Reyes, Amy Maydiline Parker, Christopher Paul Parker, Angel Star Howard and Landon James Hodgins Druck; two sisters, Juanita Stanley of Dobson and Reva Benson of Mocksville; a brother Mack Odell Edwards of Greensboro; an ex daughter-in-law Bridgett Manning of Jonesville;

In addition to his parents, Mr. Linville was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Adriana Marie Reyes.

There will be no formal services at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Lucille Garris Blackburn Luffman

ELKIN - Lucille Garris Blackburn Luffman, 93 of Elkin, passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2010.

Mrs. Luffman was born July 30, 1916 at the old A. Durham home place in Wilkes County to Rayvon & Rosa Durham Garris.

She was a dedicated member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and loved gardening, crocheting, and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Luffman was preceded in death by her first husband, E. Grant Blackburn; her second husband, Henry Luffman; her son, Jerry Ray Blackburn; a sister, Mary Wiles; and two brothers, Emmanuel Garris and Louis Everett Garris.

She is survived by her son, Edward S. Blackburn & wife, Barbara of Raleigh; three sisters, Rosa Lee Mathis & husband, Philip of Roaring Gap, Opal Nickel & husband, Stanley of Winston-Salem, and Peggy Carter of Charlotte; two brothers, R.V. Garris & wife, Pat of Roaring River and Dick Garris & wife, Lillian of Ronda; a grandson, Charles G. Blackburn & wife, Margaret of Columbia, SC; three granddaughters, Walton Spoor & husband, Richard of Raleigh, Charlotte A. PINNACLE - Mrs. Ruby Jane Michael, age 94, of Pinnacle, widow of the late Everett Garfield Michael passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Stokes Reynolds Hospital.

Mrs. Michael was born in Surry County on March 11, 1915 to the late James Wiley and Hattie Butner Barber.

Mrs. Michael worked as a homemaker, caregiver and was a member of Shoals Baptist Church.

Mrs. Michael is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Margie and Michael Neal of Shoals; one granddaughter and husband, Marisa and Tom Bryant of Apex, NC; one great grandson, Trevor Bryant.

Mrs. Michael was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at Shoals Baptist Church at 11:00 AM. with Rev. Tommy Martin officiating with interment to follow in the church cemetery. She was born February 5, 1917 in Surry County to the late Moir Wilson Belton, Sr. and Nora Pack Belton.

She was a faithful member of Bannertown Baptist Church in Mt. Airy and attended as long as her health would allow, where she taught Sunday School for over 40 years. She was retired from .the Mount Airy City School System where she served as School Food Service Director until retirement.

He husband of 66 years, Samuel Earl Myers preceded her in death in 2002.

Surviving are two children: a daughter, Sylvia Myers Chilton and husband, Doug, a son, Charles Earl Myers and wife, JoAnn Baer Myers, Richmond, VA, three grandchildren, Lauren Chilton Banks and husband, Wayne, Westfield, NC, , David Samuel Myers and wife, Dr. Michelle McAtee, Franklin, TN, and Daniel Wilson Myers, Berkeley, CA, four great grandchildren, Jacob Andrew Banks and Maegan Olivia Banks of Westfield, NC, Jacob William Myers and Noah Daniel Myers, Franklin, TN, and a host of friends, nieces and nephews. Louise was also preceded in death by three sisters, Jane Elizabeth Belton Thomas, Mary Belton McCraw, and Sara Frances Belton Keady and a brother, Moir Wilson Belton, Jr..

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, February 7, 2010 at Bannertown Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Terry Coe and Rev. Milton Sewell. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:30-8:00 pm Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Bannertown Baptist Church. Mrs. Myers will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bannertown Baptist Church, 1834 Westfield Road, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.

Judy Adams Shrewsbury

Mrs. Judy Adams Shrewsbury, age 60 passed away on Sunday evening January 31, 2010 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

She was born in Wyoming County West Virginia to the late Oscar and Macy Graham Adams.

In addition to her parents her husband Jarrett Shrewsbury preceded her in death; a son Randy Shrewsbury, four sisters Shirley Robertson, Laura Ross, Peggy Champ, Betty Adams.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law Regina Hicks of Laurinburg, NC, Angela and Marvin Rivas of Dobson, son Robbie Shrewsbury of Mt. Airy; six grandchildren Vincent Angel, Adrianna Angel, Dakota Lopez, Alexander Rivas, Jarrett Shrewsbury, Dylan Shrewsbury; sisters Linda Spain, Sandy and Thomas Miller, Edie Bolen, Rebecca and Allen Murdock; brothers and sister-in-law Butch and Jesse Adams, Acie Adams.

Robert DeVoyne Smith II

MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Robert "Bobby" DeVoyne Smith, II, 53, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2010, at his home.

Mr. Smith was born March 16, 1956, in Topeka, KS, to Robert D. Smith and Anna Lorene Ferguson Smith.

He served our country in the 82nd Airborne, Special Forces, in the United States Army.

Surviving are his wife, Sally C. Smith of the home; daughters, Nicole of Ararat and Brittany Hale and her fiancé, Jake McRoberts, of Mount Airy; grandchildren, Jada "Pooter" Dean and Cayden "Boo Boo" McRoberts; his parents, Robert D. Smith and Anna Lorene Ferguson Smith of Winston-Salem; a sister and brother-in-law, Debi and Jim McManus of Pinnacle; a brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Jessica Smith of DeLand, FL; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Rachel Nance and Jesus Perez of Cana, VA; several nieces and nephews; and many loving friends.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, February 4, 2010, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Ted Crotts officiating. Burial will follow in Peoples Church Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. Johnny Robert Snow

DOBSON— Mr. Johnny Robert Snow, age 54, of Dobson passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday February 4, 2010.

Mr. Snow was born in Surry County on October 10, 1955 to the late James Robert and Cassie Mae Venable Snow.

He was a dump truck operator and greatly enjoyed working with his horses.

Mr. Snow is survived by his wife, Deborah Doss Snow; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jennifer Lynn Snow and Rodney Hall and Elizabeth Hope Snow; two grandchildren, Katlyn Elizabeth Hall and Carson Dean Hall; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Bonnie and Jack Haymore, Betty and Ken Martin, Eva and Craig Southern and Frances and Dennis Collins; a brother and sister-in-law, James Lee and Mary Kaye Snow.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Snow was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Ray and Kenny Snow; a nephew, David Snow; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dosier Venable and his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. John Snow.

His funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home by Brother Tim Smith and Rev. Jimmy Lawton with burial to follow in Stony Knoll United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 PM until the hour of the service. Blanche West Triplett, age 82, of 500 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Blanche was born in Wilkes County on July 25, 1927 to the late Houston and Laura Barker West.

She was a member of Oak Level Baptist Church and was retired from Chatham Mfg. Company.

In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband Tallmadge Triplett, granddaughter, Melissa Bullins, great-grandchild, Cade Bullins, two brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by three children, Junior Triplett and wife Nancy, Charles Triplett and wife Becky and Margaret Swisher and husband James all of Elkin. Grandchildren, Kimberly Clendenen and husband Mike, Bobby Triplett and wife Tonya, Rickey Myers and wife Shelia, Chastity Layell and husband Benny, Misty Lester and husband Chris, Luke Triplett and wife Dana, Jody Harkey and Justin Harkey and wife Abby. Great-grandchildren, Megan Clendenen, Drew Clendenen, Sarah Myer, Megan Pilinsky, Kaylee Layell, Julie Layell, Alexis Lester, Jesse Lester, Adler Triplett, Vess Bullins and Brandon Cox. Several Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, 2:00 p.m., February 5, 2010 at Oak Level Baptist Church by the Rev. James Hall and Rev. Steven Barber. Mrs. Triplett will lie-in-state from 1:30 -2:00. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6-8 at Johnson Funeral Home.
