Shirley Anne Johnson Bowman

RADFORD, Va. — Mrs. Shirley Anne Johnson Bowman, age 80 of Radford, VA, passed away Sunday, March 07, 2010 at her daughter’s home in Radford.

Mrs. Bowman was born in Sharon, PA to Wallace Allen and Myra Daugherty Johnson.

She was a dance instructor in Mt. Airy for many years, and an owner-operator of Bo-S-Aire in Anderson, SC.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Anne and Dr. Donald Lee Miller of Radford; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven Hill Lee Bowman and wife Mary Beth Harris of Inverness, FL; twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a sister, Janet Johnson Foster of Kure Beach, NC; and a sister-in-law, Paula Scott Johnson of Mount Airy, NC.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bowman was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Carroll Bowman, Jr.; two sisters, Delores Johnson Miles and Elizabeth Hurd Johnson; and by a brother, Wallace Allen Johnson, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by Steven Hill Lee Bowman. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until the time of the service. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Flowers welcomed, or memorials may be sent to Radford Senior Recreation Center, 200 George Street, Radford, VA 24141.

Clayton Aubrey Bryant

MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Clayton Aubrey Bryant, 66, of Mount Airy, passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.

Mr. Bryant was born in Surry County on Oct. 7, 1943, to the late Daniel and Arvada “Vena” Hunt Bryant.

Mr. Bryant worked as a night watchman and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Bryant is survived by his loving wife, Christine Bryant of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Loretta Lynn B. and Alan Boyles of King; three grandchildren, Amanda (Travis) Jones, Christy Boyles and Heather Boyles; one brother, Omar Bryant of Pilot Mountain; and two sisters, Geneva Stewart and Fleta Myers, both of Pilot Mountain.

Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Clayton Wayne Bryant; and two brothers, Odell and Arlis Bryant.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 12, 2010, at Friendly Chapel Church at 2 p.m. with Bro. Don Collins officiating with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 11, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cox-Needham Funeral Home. Cecil Calbert Crouse Sr

STATE ROAD - Cecil Calbert Crouse, Sr.. Mr. Cecil Crouse, Sr. of State Road passed away at his home on Sunday, March 7, 2010.

Born in Alleghany May 1, 1920 to the late George and Pearl Andrews Crouse, he was 89.

Cecil was a Postal Contractor and served in the United States Armed Forces.

He is survived by his children: Jane Reynolds (Bill) of State Road, Ann "Annie Belle" Crouse Cook of State Road, Nancy Crouse of State Road, and Cecil "Bud" Crouse, Jr. of North Wilkesboro. two brothers: Woodrow Crouse of Thurmond, Malhon Crouse (Ina Rae) of Kernersville and a sister, Ima Jean Chappell (James) of Elkin. Along with four grandchildren: Sarah Bartley (Dale), Krista Seagraves, Caleb Gullatt, Bailee Crouse, seven great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Daisy Etta Hutchens Crouse, two sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be held at Grassy Creek United Methodist Church, Tuesday, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., followed by the service on Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. John Pillsbury and Rev. Michael Harrell officiating.

PILOT MOUNTAIN — Miss Channah Celine Day, age 12 of Pilot Mountain, became an angel of God on Thursday, March 11, 2010.

Little Channah was the love of her family’s life and she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Surviving is her devoted mother, Denise Montgomery Day; a brother, Catlin Cox and fiancée, Brandy Willard; sisters, Courteney Cox and Katie Day; her mema, Juanita Montgomery; an extra special nephew, Carson Cox; uncle and aunt, Warren Montgomery, III and Tammy; cousins, Nicolas and Dillan Montgomery; godparents, Jerry and Carol Hardy; a lifelong doctor and friend, Dr. Kurt Klinepeter and special friends, Tad and Hello Kitty.

Little Channah was preceded in death by her grandfather, Warren H. “Sonny” Montgomery, Jr.; and her great grandparents, Warren Montgomery, Sr. and Gertrude Montgomery and Arnold Leftwich, Sr. and Elma Leftwich.

Thomas Jackson Edmonds

WHITSETT — Thomas Jackson "Jack" Edmonds, 82, of 2157 Herron Rd. passed away Monday, March 8, 2010 at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

He was the husband of Hazel Michael Edmonds for sixty-one years.

He was born July 20, 1927 in Surry County to the late Joseph Roscoe and Joanna Elizabeth Snow Edmonds.

Jack served in the U.S. Army. He was employed by Big Jim's Appliance and then was the owner operator of Jack's Appliance Service for thirty-four years until his health made it impossible to continue. Jack was a member of Brown Wesleyan Church for over sixty-three years and was a member of the Friendship Sunday School class. He loved to go to Gibsonville to the Around the Green on Saturdays. He was a grandpa to all the other children of the church besides his own grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of the home, daughters; Jackie Faith Kylander and her husband Lonny of Chapel Hill, Tammy Rene Steinert and her husband Jason of Julian, Sandy Gaye Wheeley and her husband Tim of Haw River, grandchildren; Amanda Etchison, Travis and Amy Kylander, T.J. Hill, Danielle Justice, Cody Myrick, Michael Baldwin, great grandchildren; Alexis and Austyn Etchison, Adiken Flynn, Bryleigh Flynn and Jordan Baldwin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Debra Diana Edmonds.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Brown Wesleyan Church by Rev. Larry Pope and Rev. Billy Roy. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Wesleyan Church and at other times at the home.

Doris Mayes Gentry

DOBSON — Ms. Doris Mayes Gentry, age 85 of Dobson, passed away Tuesday, March 09, 2010 at the Woltz Hospice Home.

Ms. Gentry was born in Surry County, August 4, 1924 to Floyd Dennis and Mattie Galyean Mayes.

She was a loving homemaker who will be dearly missed.

Surviving is a sister-in-law, Hassie Jarrell of Lowgap; nieces, Shirley Payne and husband Larry; Nedra Edwards; Nelvra Dozier and husband Earl all of Dobson; nephews, Dennis Mayes and wife Rita and Delane Mayes all of Dobson and several great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Gentry was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Hoover Mayes and a nephew, David Mayes.

Vera Gladys Gentry Goings

MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Vera Gladys Gentry Goings age 92 of Mt. Airy, NC widow of Boyd Grant Goings passed away Monday March 8, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home.

She was born December 15, 1917 in Surry County to the late Rennie and Jane Nixon Gentry.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to all. She was a retired employee of the Beulah School cafeteria and was of the Primitive Baptist Faith.

Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Nancy Edmonds, Dobson; Janie and Aaron Draughon; Mt. Airy, five grandchildren and four spouses, Jeff Edmonds and Deanna of Dobson, Joel Edmonds, of Dobson, Josh Edmonds and Nicole of Apex, Shannon Ford and Joel of Boonville, Amanda Bledsoe and T.J. of Dobson, a step grandson and spouse, Tim Draughon and Anita of Dobson, four great grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Goings was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Atkinson.

Barbara Beatty Groover

GREENSBORO — Mrs. Barbara Beatty Groover, 83, of Greensboro, died Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Moses Cone Hospital.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 11, 2010, 2 p.m., at First Christian Church by the Rev. Lee Moses. A graveside service will follow Saturday, March 13, 2010, 2 p.m. at Salem Fork Christian Church Cemetery in Dobson by the Rev. June Haislip.

Barbara was born April 22, 1926, in Maysville, Ga., the daughter of John A. and Hattie Tolbert Beatty.

Barbara attended Phillips University in Enid, Okla., and was a member of First Christian Church in Greensboro where she was very active in the Christian women’s fellowship and various other activities.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Howard H. Groover.

Surviving are her daughter, Carol Groover of Greensboro; son, John H. Groover and wife Kristie, formerly of Asheville; and grandchildren, Julian Groover and Alexandra Ryan.

Madge Sylvia Gunter Gunnell

ARARAT — Mrs. Madge Sylvia Gunter Gunnell age, 89 of Ararat, NC passed away Monday, March 8, 2010 at Northern Hospital of Surry County.

Mrs. Gunnell was born in Surry County on May 20, 1920 to the late James Charlie and Bertha Southern Gunter.

She retired as a secretary from Surry Community College. She was a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church and was a Gold Star Mother.

She is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lema and Hoyal Jones of Ararat, NC and Maude Hill of Ararat, VA; a caregiver and special sister-in-law, Hassie Gunter of Mt. Airy; several nieces and nephew and several great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gunnell was preceded in death by a son, Dale Alan Gunnell and a brother, Charles C. Gunter.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Rock Hill Baptist Church by Rev. Lee Johnson with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Thomas Richard Helmholtz

EDEN — Thomas Richard Helmholtz, 53, of 227 Clifton Street, passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 10, 2010, at Hospice Home in Wentworth.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 14, 2010, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Guilford Memorial Gardens in Greensboro.

Mr. Helmholtz was born July 9, 1956, in Passaic County, N.J., son of the late Melvin T. and Lina Deppner Helmholtz.

He was a service technician with AT&T.

Surviving are brother, Melvin Helmholtz of Eden; sisters, Joanne Thompson of Eden and Rosemarie Gwynn of Mount Airy; three nieces; two nephews; three great-nephews; and two great-nieces.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Frances Nix.

Myron Gail Hester James

YADKINVILLE - Ms. Myron Gail Hester James of Coolidge Street in Yadkinville passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2010.

She was born on April 25, 1945 in Surry County, the daughter of the late Myron Atwell and Pansy Pauline Thompson Hester.

She owned and operated James Tax Service for many years and was employed by H & R Block prior to that. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and was actively involved in the Yadkin County Humane Society. She was a "Foster Mom" to many motherless and homeless animals throughout her life and had a great love for her own surviving pets.

Surviving are her husband, Pastor Bill James, Jr. of East Bend; her children, Kevin James and his wife, Lisa of Lexington, Kelly Riggs of Mount Airy, Kristy Dinkins and her husband, Randy of Yadkinville, Kenan James and his wife, Dana of Yadkinville and Kyle James and his wife, Shannon of Mount Airy; her 12 precious grandchildren, Chrystal, Alex, Emily, Brylea and David James, Kaleb and Karlie Riggs, Erika, Tyler and Sydney Dinkins and Kylie and Brayden James; and her aunt, Mary Ruth Humphries of Mount Airy.

Funeral services will be conducted at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel on Silas Creek Parkway at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 14, 2010 by Pastor Lyn Ballentine. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Wilburn Eric Jarrell

MT. AIRY - Dr. Wilburn Eric Jarrell, 83, of 700 Country Club Road, Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at his home.

He was born March 14, 1926, in Floyd County, VA, son of the late Benjamin A. and Mary Hancock Jarrell.

Dr. Jarrell was a family physician, retiring in 1998 after 43 years of doing what he loved best, improving patients’ health. He was proud of his military service, having served as a pharmacist mate 3rd class at Iwo Jima and Okinawa during World War II, where he witnessed the raising of the flag in Iwo Jima. He also served with the First Marine Air Wing, Headquarters Squadron, in Tientsin, China. Upon completion of duties, he entered the University of Virginia for undergraduate studies and in 1954 received his medical degree from the University of Virginia Medical School. Dr. Jarrell was a past member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a lifetime member of the North Carolina Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and the Surry-Yadkin Medical Society. When serving as a member of the staff at Northern Hospital of Surry County, he helped design the hospital’s first Coronary Care Unit, initiated the establishment of the Medical Examiner’s system in Surry County, and served the county as its first Medical Examiner. Upon certification, he became a member of the American Association of Medical Review Officers. He was an original member of Surry Medical Ministries and upon retirement assumed the position of Interim Director of the Surry County Health Department. Dr. Jarrell also held the position as adjunct professor at East Carolina Medical School. In 2004, he was proud to be inducted into the Thomas Jefferson Society at the University of Virginia. In the community, Dr. Jarrell was a past member of the Mount Airy Community Foundation Board, Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank, The Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce, Camp Physician at Raven Knob and recipient of the Old Hickory Council’s “Order of the Arrow” award. He was the first recipient of the “Patrick Countian of the Year” award. He also was a member of Central United Methodist Church.

Dr. Jarrell is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jewel Davis Jarrell; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Roger Williams of Charleston, SC; a son and daughter-in-law, Davis and Teresa Jarrell of Bluefield, WV; a daughter, Susan Jarrell of Bluefield, VA; and five grandchildren, Leslie Williams, Roger Williams, Jr., and Logan Williams, Davis Jarrell, Jr., and Anne Jarrell. He is also survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Alene and Richard Ward of Mount Airy and Claudine Eaton of Crystal River, FL; and four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Joe Jarrell and Charles Jarrell, both of Mount Airy, Frank and Elizabeth Jarrell of Kernersville, Dallas and Diane Jarrell of Roanoke, VA, and Donnis Jarrell of Shelby.

He was preceded in death by his son, Wilburn Eric Jarrell, Jr.; his parents; and two brothers, Tommy Jarrell and Arnold Jarrell.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, March 12, 2010, at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Ferree officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery. Callie Gwyn Branch Lothian

STATE ROAD — Mrs. Callie Gwyn Branch Lothian, 90, of Red Bank Lane, State Road, formerly of Mount Airy, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.

Mrs. Lothian was born September 7, 1919, in Surry County, daughter of the late Charlie William and Mary Esther Simmons Gwyn.

She was a retired beautician and a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church. Mrs. Lothian was also an exceptional artist.

Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Bonnie and Earl Benge of Jonesville, Linda Gordon of Mount Airy, and Melanie and Gary Carpenter of State Road; eight grandchildren, Charlotte Grey, Charles Hull, III, Todd Hull, Kim Hull, Penny Blake, Neil Gordon, Kory Seal, and Kyle Carpenter; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Jenny Gwyn and Betty Gwyn, both of Mount Airy.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lothian was preceded in death by her husbands, Webb Branch and George Lothian; two sisters, Stella Gwyn and Mary Cooke; and four brothers, Brady Gwyn, Floyd Gwyn, Ray Gwyn, and Charles Gwyn.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, March 14, 2010, at 3:00 PM at Flat Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Todd E. Byrd officiating. Burial will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Rebecca Ann Wall McCann

DOBSON - Mrs. Rebecca Ann Wall McCann, 71, of Dobson passed away unexpectedly at her home on Monday March 8, 2010.

She was born in Surry County on March 2, 1939 to the late William McKinley and Dulcie Scott Wall.

She was a retired Computer Technician from AT&T and a faithful member of Salem Fork Baptist Church. Becky was always willing to help others anyway she could while asking nothing in return. Words can never express the thanks that her granddaughter has for always being there and imparting her wisdom and personal strength to her.

She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Jody Patient of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Tara and husband Alex Kellner of Greensboro and three great-grandchildren whom she deeply cherished, Isabella Rose Kellner, Ender Alex Kellner and soon to arrive, Emerson Kellner; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Mack Wall of Lenoir, Royce and Eloise Wall of Elkin and Linda "Bill" Wall of Jonesville.

In addition to her parents, her husband Hershel McCann; a brother, Harold Wall; an infant sister; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Johnson Wall, preceded Mrs. McCann in death.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday March 11, 2010 at Salem Fork Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Tom Parker and Rev. Ms. Moser was born in Stokes County on December 10, 1912 to the late Peter and Mary Hendricks Slate.

Ms. Moser worked for Barbers Hosiery Mill and was a member of Union Hill Friends Church.

Ms. Moser is survived by her daughter Faye M. King of Westfield, one granddaughter; Cindy (Jimmy) Boyles of Mount Airy; one great-granddaughter Ashton Boyles.

Ms. Moser was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Charlie Slate, Plato Slate, Hardin Slate; five sisters, Edith Bradley, Francis Owens, Jennie Harrison, Effie Sexton, Alma Goins.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at Asbury Presbyterian Church at 2:00 P.M .with Rev. Ricky Rogers and Rev. Terry Collins officiating with interment to follow in Slate Family Cemetery.Family will receive friends on Monday, March 8, 2010 from 7-9 PM at Cox-Needham

McKinley John Orta

Born in Surry County on Mar. 10, 2010
and resided in Traphill, NC.

McKinley John Orta, infant son of Ivan John and Margaret Beth Higdon Orta passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mackenzie Sue Orta.

In addition to his parents, McKinley is survived by a brother Marcus; three sisters Caitlyn, Maggie, and Morgan, all of the home; Paternal grandparents Felice and Ivan Orta of New York; and Paternal great grandmother Dolores Izquierdo of Florida; Maternal grandparents, Mary Ann and James Higdon of Whitesville, KY.

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 1:30pm at Faith Baptist Church cemetery in Traphill with Father John Hanic.

Ralph Roberson

Mr. Ralph Roberson, age 88 of Stuart, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at his home.

He was born in Little Richmond, North Carolina on October 30, 1921 to the late Samuel and Ellen Franklin Roberson.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Roberson was preceded in death by a son, Mitchell Wray Tatum, and 11 siblings: Ida, Effrie, Alice, Lilly and Mallie, Sam, Russell, Chester, Fay, Ray, and Robie.

He completed his walk with the Lord at First Christian Church (D.O.C.) in Stuart where he was a member, deacon, trustee, treasurer and custodian. He had retired from Easthampton Rubber Thread in 1980, and thereafter was employed part-time at Farmer’s Foods.

Mr. Roberson is survived by his wife of 50 years, Madelene Ziegler Roberson of the home; two sons, Elder Larry (Iris) Tatum, of Cleveland, Ohio and Dr. Houston Roberson of Sewanee, Tennessee; four daughters, Mrs. Elaine (Charlie) Thomas of Stuart, Preacher Sheila (Albert) Thomas of Stuart, Ms. Teresa Roberson of Charlotte, North Carolina and Mrs. Olivia (Kem) Givens of Charlotte; twelve grandchildren, Amanda Holmes, LaDonna Tatum, Christopher Thomas, Gregory Thomas, Derrick Thomas, Cynthia Robinson, Amy Craven, Nekeyda Tatum-Wimbush, Corey Thomas, Angela Tatum, Kimberly Tatum, and Bradley Thomas; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Roberson will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Elder Melton Roberson and Dr. Roger Hagwood officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens. A wake will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Ruby Hardy Stanley

ARARAT - Mrs. Ruby Hardy Stanley, age 83, of Ararat, NC, widow of the late Paul Henry Stanley passed away at her home early Thursday morning, March 11, 2010.

Mrs. Stanley was born in Surry County on October 20, 1926 to the late Levi Ellis and Ella Marion Hardy.

Mrs. Stanley was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister. Mrs. Stanley attended Appalachian State Teachers College, graduating with a degree in Home Economics and Science. She taught Science for two years in Stoneville, NC before returning to her native Surry County. She began teaching Home Economics at Copeland and then finished her teaching career of 32 years at Surry Central High in Dobson, NC. She was a long-time member of Level Cross United Methodist Church, and member and past president of Surry Quilters Guild. She also volunteered at Horne Creek Farm and was a former member on their board of directors.

Mrs. Stanley is survived by her loving daughters, Elizabeth (Charles) Calhoun of Ararat and Mary (Terry) Marshall of Shoals; four grandchildren, Matthew Calhoun (Rayanna) and Tim Calhoun, Jeff Marshall (Mele) and Layne Marshall; two great grandchildren, Luca and Faith; one brother and sister-in-law, Jesse and Martha Hardy and of Shoals; one sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Jimmy Palmer of Pinnacle; special friends and caregivers, Vickie Bledsoe and Carolyn Reid; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Stanley was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister, Luella Westmoreland.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Level Cross United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM with Rev. Rickey Spencer officiating with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Kimberly Lee Townsend

Elkin - Kimberly Lee Townsend age 51, of Hawthorne Rd. passed away Sunday March 7, 2010 at her residence.

She was born April 23, 1958 in Forsyth County to John A. and Camilla Galloway Townsend.

Ms. Townsend attended NCSU where she graduated in 1980, Magna Cum Laude, with a BS degree in Zoology. She was also in the first graduating class of NCSU Veterinary Medicine, receiving her DVM in 1985. Kim Started her veterinary career in publishing of veterinary literature in Kansas City, Mo., and then continued in Veterinary pharmaceuticals in Greensboro, N.C. She then followed up with a year in Basel, Switzerland. She was currently employed with the N.C. dept. of agriculture in Elkin as a veterinary diagnostician , and a member of Elkin First United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John A. Townsend, a sister Sandra Gail Townsend, one nephew Kelley J. Huitt, and a Niece Kippen Huitt.

Survivors include: Her parents, John A. and Camilla Townsend of Lincolnton; two daughters, Kelly Christian Arnold, and Camilla Hyland Arnold of the home; two sisters Pati Townsend Cooper and husband Michael, of Lincolnton N.C and Cari Townsend
Rhodes and husband Jeff, of Fletcher, N.C. ;three nephews and two nieces.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 10, at 3:00 pm at Elkin First United Methodist Church, by Rev. Chuck Baker. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends, Tuesday March 9, 2010 from 6-8 pm at Elkin Funeral Service.

Stacy Watson Venable

MT. AIRY - Mrs. Stacy Watson Venable, 94, of 524 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday morning, March 11, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.

Mrs. Venable was born July 2, 1915, in Surry County, daughter of the late Abraham Emanuel and Ninevah Watson.

Stacy retired from Perry Manufacturing and was a member of Union Primitive Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and was a friend to all.

She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carolyn and Grady Nichols of Mount Airy, Wendolyn Boyles of Ararat, and Mona and C.R. Sneed of Cherokee; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Jettie Venable of Salisbury and Reggie and Ana Venable of Raleigh; a foster daughter, Wanda Billings of Roanoke, VA; nine grandchildren, Sherry Brindle and Tony Nichols, both of Mount Airy, Danny Nichols of Miami, FL, Blaine Boyles and Byron Boyles, both of Ararat, John Venable of Clemmons, Jason Venable and Teresa Galizes, both of Raleigh, and Whitney Sneed of Charlotte; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Venable was preceded in death by her husband, Rex Wayne Venable; five brothers, Thomas Watson, Ernest Watson, Fred Watson, Eddie Watson, and Howard Watson; a half-sister, Mildred Branch; and a half-brother, the Rev. Arlin Watson.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Little Mountain Baptist Church, with the Rev. Billy Watson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Little Mountain Baptist Church.
