I am responding to an old post but I am a direct descendant of Hezekiah "Doc" Drake Jr. and Jane Cantrell. Their son, Leander Pinkney Drake was my great Grandfather and he had a brother named John Leander "Lee" Drake. I am trying to go further back on the family tree to John Leander Drake & Winifred Massey who lived in Lincoln County, NC. This would be John Leander Drake's and Leander Pinkey Drake's grandparents. Would like to exchange any information if possible.

Nervy Aiken, b. 1862

In the 1870 census of Pickens county, SC Thomas Aiken is listed as head of household, with wife Jane, and (apparent) children Nervy 7, and Martin 4. Thomas was divorced from his first wife, when he married Jane; they as well, later divorced. Does anyone know her full name? her parents´ names? Whatever became of Nervy? Was she indeed a daughter to Thomas, or a stepdaughter? Martin was both Thomas and Jane's son, as proven by his death certificate of 1948.

I am kin to ALL the Cisson's in South Carolina. My Grandmother was Bertha Leoda Cisson. She had brothers, Baxter, Charlie, Johnny, William, Dewey. My Aunt tells me that she had a sister also but she died young. I have (1) Aunt still living in Taylors, South Carolina that is the daughter to Bertha Leoda Cisson Moody & John Grover Moody. She is around 91 years old. She stills remembers everything and everyones names. She's really good at who was born to who and who was kin to who. Bertha Cisson was married to John Grover Moody. They 6 Children: Clifton Guthrie Moody ( my grandfather ), Grover Cleveland Moody, William Austin "Bill" Moody, Daisy Leoda Moody, Mary Annie "Lucille" Moody Head -(still Living), Troy Moody. Clifton Guthrie Moody married Loretta Malinda McMakin (my grandparents). They had 4 sons: Grover Leon Moody (Inman,SC)-living, James Calvin Moody (waterloo, SC)-living, Joseph Estee Moody ( Campobello, SC)living, Kenneth O'Neal Moody "Cotton" (Biloxi, Mississippi- my father)living. So as getting alot of info on the Cisson's I can pretty much get it and the Moody's. Aunt Lou tells me that the Cisson's were also kin to the Turner's, Anders.

Hi!
Yes indeed, I can easily explain all of this. I have it well documented in order. Know this family well as Surry D. Holbert Whitmire was my great-grandfather. I have the family Bible to back up other records, so no room for misunderstanding or error.

Please contact me direct at dma12@bellsouth.net and we can talk more.
Michael

Michael ... my name is Mary Whitmire Simpson. I saw your post about William Monteith Whitmire and his son, Surry Davis Holbert Whitmire. Surry Davis and Holbert Pickens are driving me up a wall. So confusing. On Surry Davis' son (Holbert Pickens) birth certificate, Surry's name is: Surrey Davis Herbert Whitmire (Surrey (note the E and Herbert not Holbert). I've located two Holbert Pickens ... one born in 1888 and one in 1891. The one born in 1888 is Surrey's son. I'm not certain about the other. Can you enlighten me about these relatives? I've searched and searched and have found very little.

I'm related to the Whitmires via Bennet. He was my great
grandfather, GG Michael A., GGG Stephen, etc.

I will appreciate anything. Thanks so much. Have a Blessed day. Mousie (my nickname).

Good Morning!! My grgrgrandpa was Harvey Tucker and was on the 1880 Transylvania Census with his family. My grgrandma was born aft. that. I'm wondering if this is the same Harvey Tucker you are asking about. They showed up on the Monroe Co. TN Census in 1900. He and his wife are buried in Monroe Co. TN. I'm trying to get info on his parents. His first name was William. I have that they had 6 children but no Christine. My grandma's name was Ellen, other siblings were Samuel, William, James, Martha, and Maggie. Would love to hear from anyone related or with info.

Thanks Connie French

Does anyone know any more about James Patton Deaver's wife, Emma? I can't find her under Combs. I received information that her maiden name might be some variation on Porsche, but I'm striking out on that as well. She and her second husband, Robert Elizur Patton, are my great great grandparents.

would like info on John W. Dodson and wife Mary M. Cantrell who lived in Transylvania Co.NC. John listed his residence as Rosman on the death certificate of wife Mary M. Cantrell. Mary was abandoned by her father after the death of her mother around 1877 along with four sisters. She and two of the sisters lived with G.H. Morgan listed in the Transylvani 1880 census. The other girls were Ida Nancis and Lana or Lena. Ida and Mary may have been twins. I can not find the other two girls, nor do I have their names. I have not been able to find out who Ida and Lena married either. According to their father in his Civil War Pension application, they were all living, but I don't believe he really knew, as he was living in another state and made no contact. He married or claimed he married Ary Margaret Hendricks, daughter of Jeptha and Martha Riggins Hendricks, who lived in Eastatoe on Nancy Mtn. If anyone can shed any light on this family, please respond.

Poll Tax - what, when?

I was just examining the tax records of 1862 for Transylvania County, North Carolina. Specifically I was looking at the information of William [Asbury] Batson. He was listed in the 1860 census for Greenville County, SC (Oil Camp P.O.) and in the 1862, 1863 and 1864 tax records, etc. in Transylvania County, NC. Thus he moved to Transylvania between late 1860 and early 1862.

I noticed that he paid no poll tax that year, yet some taxpayers did pay a poll tax for 1862, 1863 or 1864, but he is listed as a Superior Court juror in 1864. That got me to thinking - why did he not pay a poll tax? Did it have to do with length of residency, or what? The aggregate tax list for 1862 shows that 304 white males paid a poll tax. I don't have the population figure for that year byt it had to be much larger than this.

Does anyone have information of the rules for paying a poll tax in the southern United States in the mid-1860s?

I was recently in Sapphire Valley, NC and picked up a copy of "The Mountain Voice". In it was the following article:
"Notice To The Public: Approval Sought To Move Graves - ...on December 8th, 2008 intend to present to the Transylvania County Board of Commissioners for their consideration and approval at public hearing..., a plan for the disinterment, removal, and respectful reinterment within a local cemetery, the remains of three unidentified graves located on property more particularly described by two deeds thereof recorded at Deed Book 388, page 411 and Document Book 411, page 323, both of the Transylvania County Registry... The abandoned and unidentified graves are marked with rude head and foot stones bearing no identifying characteristics as to the possible identity of their origin. Through consultation with the Transylvania County Cemetery Board and a local historian, the most likely but uncertain identity of the graves are those of William Asbury Batson and family, who moved to the Connestee Falls area sometime after the Civil War. All interested persons should...contact Trisha McLeod,Clerk to the Transylvania County Board of Commissioners..., at (828)-884-3271..."

Yes Ma'am-

The church does still exist and it is in Penrose, NC. Penrose is only about 10 minutes from downtown Brevard, NC. There is an old rock church that has been there since probably the late 1800's and then there is a newer brick sanctuary. My family - the Talley's are all burried there.

Sonya McCall
