The tombstone of Elizabeth Carlton, b. 1/11/1829, d. 1/1/1904 has been recovered and is in the possession of the Cary, NC, police dept. They would like to restore it to it's rightful location. Anyone with information, please contact me or Denise Wilson at the Cary Police Dept.

I just saw the WRAL news story on this tombstone. My mother's mother was a Carlton -- Lois Carlton Vowell of Durham County. Her brother, Alton Carlton should still be living in Durham and may have a family Bible or family history.

My mother does not remember an Elizabeth Carlton, but her great grandfather was Marcellus Carlton and was a judge in Wake County. The Carlton family resided (as far back as she knows) in both Raleigh and Durham.

I hope this helps.

SIncerely,

I read about the tombstone at the WFMY2 web site. The article stated the dates were 11 Jan 1849 - 01 Apr 1904.

If the date of birth was 1829, I think I have found Elizabeth. She would have been the wife of James Madison Carlton.

1900 Wake County census:

Madison Carlton b. Mar 1854
Elizabeth wife b. Jan 1829

She was older. Age varies from 1880 to 1900, but at least 20 years older than Madison.

By 1910, James M. Carlton had remarried. The census noted he and his wife, Mary, had been married twice.

So, the date of death of 1904 for Elizabeth fits.

I located James Madison Carlton at ancestry.com with wife Elizabeth or Elizabeth Mary King, no other info for Mary and no death date for James.

Marcellus Carlton was a son.

Unfortunately, I do not know where Elizabeth or James were buried.

I did find son, Marcellus Carlton, in a cemetery listing at the Wake County GenWeb site. He is buried at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. James Madison Carlton nor Elizabeth were listed as being buried there.

Hope this helps,
Norma Zanetti

As a follow-up...

I just spoke with my great-uncle, Alton Carlton, who now lives in Timberlake, NC in Person County.

He also saw the news story, but did not have any documents relating to family history of the Carltons.

He remembered Marcellus Carlton, his grandfather, but remembered only a little about his parents: Marcellus (who is buried at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Raleigh) was the son of a German immigrant and his English wife. They originally settled in Warsaw, NC. Is it possible the church would have a record relating to his lineage?

Alton also said that Marcellus Carlton had traced his family history and had a chart made, but neither my uncle, nor either of his siblings has this document. He also stated that there were other Carlton families in Wake County and that there was a family of English origin with the spelling "Carleton."

I do hope you are able to locate the proper home for this stone. It seems possible this could be a relative of mine, but I am, for now at least, at a loss for how else to trace this.

Good luck!

I have found a couple of family trees online for this Carlton family, but I can't vouch for the accuracy. The line goes like this:

Leonard Carlton
Thomas Trice Carlton
Wesley P. Carlton
James Madison Carlton
Marcellus Carlton

Orange and Wake Co., NC

Marcellus J. Carlton and younger Carlton family members are resting in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetary. The Church was founded in 1883. I do not have an Elizabeth Carlton as resting there.

The parents of James Madison Carlton are Wesley P. Carlton and Laura (Lawry). Other children Geneavia, Willie, Fanny, and Timmy. The children possibly grew up in Morrisville township.1850 Census Wake Co.

Madison and Wife Elizabeth King were married in 1870.
A few years before her death, around 1900 they were living in House Creek Township, Wake Co.

Shortly after her death, Madison remarried Mary last name?
In 1910, they were living in House Creek Township.

In 1920, they were living in Leesville Township, probably at or around Leesville road.

I hope this will help.

I took my Mother out to Ebenezer Baptist Church today to visit the grave of her Great-grandfather Marcellus Carlton, presumably the son of Elizabeth Carlton. We walked the cemetery and found quite a few Carlton and King family members there. However, the older graves there seem to be right around 1900. So I am thinking that perhaps if we look to the church from which the founders of this church came, we might find THE cemetery.

Does anyone know the origins of Ebenezer Baptist Church?

Thanks for any new information. As this is an ancestor of mine, I am personally interested in restoring this tombstone to its proper location.

Also, if anyone can send me a link or any historical data on the genealogy tracing back from Marcellus (my brother was even named after him), I would greatly appreciate it.

My direct email is dawngaug@employees.org.

Thanks for getting back to me Lynn.

I don't know why the email is not working for you. I am receiving email and the address posted is correct.

There is still no news on locating this tombstone. I have been literally driving around Wake County walking old cemeteries trying to find leads.

Thanks again to you and everyone else who have helped.

Dawn
