Hi Rootsweb/Ancestry used to notify us when a response is posted to an old post, they are getting so bad about that. But it's lucky that I subscribe for Alerts to several Message Boards and I came across your message. It's sad, too, that they also messed up the original message that I posted, they added a bunch of illegible figures when they changed their message boards a couple of years ago, my original message made a lot more sense. Also, since I first posted, I've found out a lot more of those named were related to me.
Anyway, I see that it was Mrs. Viola Spruill, Deacon Thomas Hudgins, Mrs. Nannie Spruill, and Deacon Kenneth Spruill were part of the Anniversary Publication Committee, meaning that they are the ones that gathered the history and info for publishing the book. There are photos of Mrs. Dorothy Spruill (1859-1948), Mrs. Mary Hudgins (1858-1922), David N. Spruill (1895-1975), William S. Hudgins (1895-1964), Willie J. Spruill (1875-1950),Mrs. Cora B. Spruill (1878-1960), Mrs. Beulah Spruill (1894-1966),Mrs. Nannie J. Hudgins (1898-1947), Arthur W. Hudgins, Rev. James S. Spruill, Rev. Nesbitt E. Spruill and Joseph Spruill.

These last names without dates had no dates, and were probably still living, if not recently deceased, at the time of publication in 1977.

I don't know what other info you're looking for, I posted MATTHEW ALSTON's Census info in a previous message in this thread, which I am sure must have read. Whatever else you are looking for is in the Census. If you're looking for his father's further info, I've also supplied his name, Whit Alston, so all you do is look at his age & family in that 1930 Census, then follow him backwards through each census before that.

As far as I know, if you are Matthew's grandson, then Whit Alston was your G-grandfather. I have no idea of where either Matthew or Angeline were buried, I'm not even sure where they died since they obviously moved to another State which doesn't give access to their death databases. I know when their son Matthew Alston Jr. died (1939-1993) since his birth record is included online, so it's easier to identify the right person through the SSDI. But I haven't found any birth record for his parents and without a their actual birth dates, it's difficult to identify them in the SSDI, the only other way to find a death date for States that don't have death records online, that is, if they had a Social Security number, which a lot of people didn't from that era. Since Matthew Jr.'s SSDI indicates a last residence in Maryland, and that he had filed for SS in Virginia before 1957, one can only assume those were possible locations for his parents to have died also, but VA currently has very few death records available online and I hate it when someone moves to that State since it's almost impossible to find anything on them after 1940.

My family is also out of Halifax, NC. My great great great grandmother is Molly Solomon who was married to Thomas Albert Solomon. Their son Ferris Solomon Married Neva Silver. Their daughter Ethel Solomon married Matthew Richardson. I write because I have some links that make me wonder if Molly's father was Daniel Boyd. I'm not sure but I'd like to know what links you might have??? I know that Ethel was raised in such a way that she did not "believe" in slavery. Because Halifax had tens of thousands of free people of color and Ethel seemed to be ignorant to what slavery was I think that these families may have been among them. Good morning Jerome. My name is Geraldine. i am a descendant of Andrew Jackson Green of Warren County, N C. He had two wives. My Grandmother Geneva was a child of his first wife. The second wife had children that lived in Warren County. One of the Grandchildren married William Henry Cordell, (Caudle). His line comes out of Halifax County. The name Caudle was changed to Cordell. Another great granddaughter married a William Caudle, (his second wife). My aunt married William Henry Cordell. She was his third wife. He was first cousin to my grandmother Lizzie Lewis Turner. They were first cousins to a famed Indian Chief. There are Cordells livng in Warrenton N C that may have some history. Hope this helps. Have you looked for them in the Census records? While Robert & Georgia were married in Warren Co. in 1903, he was not from Warren County. I found him with his parents in 1900 in Granville County:

One correction on a date you have.
The marriage between John Hawkins & Salley Macon took place in Bute County; in 1765, Warren County did not exist and the location was known as Bute County at the time.

Be careful with throwing "Hunt" in as a middle name, it can throw everything off ;)

This is what I have
Gideon Macon (1715 VA- 1761 NC) and Priscilla Jones (1729 VA-1802 NC) had a third child name Sara "Sallie" Macon (1747 NC-1808 NC).

Sallie married John D Hawkins (1745-1808) son of Philemon Hawkins (1717-1801) and Delia Martin (1721-1794) on 27 Feb 1765 in Warren County, North Carolina. They had ten kids.

Sallie remarried James Alston (1754-1805) in 1804.

Yes I know. Almost anyone who is descended from the RICHARDSONs and EVANS of Halifax & Warren, will find that their ancestors go back to a BASS in one way or another. At least 2 of the original RICHARDSON brothers born in the mid-1700s, married BASS females, and many of the EVANS married RICHARDSONs, all of these families are intertwined down the line.

I am looking for documentation on Zachariah Ellis. Zachariah was still living in North Carolina in 1800. He was listed in the census records there. He moved to Georgia after 1800 and was living in Oglethorpe County Georgia where he was listed in his mother-in-laws will as son-in-law. He may have died shortly after that. There doesnt seem to be any 1810 census records for Georgia, but the 1820 census records are there, but he is not listed. His son Benjamin married in 1820. I am assuming that Zachariah died before 1820 and that his wife Rebecca Hawkins Ellis may have re-married by this time. Benjamin wasn't listed as head of household in 1820, so he must have been living with someone else, or his mother and step-father. Still have a lot to do on Zachariah.

I have been researching this family from the Hawkins side. My family ties in through James Fisher Gordon and Sarah Hawkins, who is Rebecca's sister. I have a copy of their mother's will which was filed in Oglethorpe Co., GA in 1811. (It was originally recorded but not filed in NC prior to her leaving there when they moved to GA.) Mary Hawkins died in 1811 and James Fisher Gordon and Zachariah Ellis were listed in her will as executors. The will also mentions her daughter Sarah Gordon as well as the name of three grandchildren and some slaves. What information are you looking for exactly?

I understand he was buried at the Episcopal Cemetery in Ridgeway, but can't find any information regarding this cemetery. Maybe this book can help.

I have been advised that the Warren County Cemetery Books is now published and available for purchase after many long years of surveys of hundreds of cemeteries by the local Historical and Genealogical Societies in the County.
It is a 3-volume set with over 300 pages in each volume and covers both public and private cemeteries throughout the County, many of which have never been surveyed by anyone else. Each volume contains an index of the names in that particular book, and they are fully categorized by location with complete directions.
One other thing I was asked to mention is that there are 2 cemeteries not included which unfortunately did not have time to get into the book: the Old Warrenton Cemetery and Fairview Cemetery. However, both of those cemeteries are online at Find-A-Grave complete with photos and directions
for anyone looking for people in them.

My father was Andrew Mitchell Owen. My name is Allen Milton Owen. My tree name is in Andrew and Allen Owen's name. My grandfather was James Monroe Owen and he married Martha Isabell Green 1877-1958. Her father was Peter Larson Green 1799-1881 are so. I have Josiah Green as Peter's father but no way to prove it but they both came from Morgan County Ga. and the dates work. This my maternal grandfather Jerman is the informant on his fathers death certificate and the Jermans proper address is listed there aswell!

If you notice Jerman's new wife Margerte Cole is the informant on his death certificate and probably did not list the proper full name for Jermans mother. Her name was Maggie and she was rumored to be white "caucasian" which is why I think margeret said his mothers name was Maggie White.

After working with several genweb researchers and those at familysearch in Utah I became convinced that the following family is Aaron Hills See Link: http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1880usfedcen&a...

A researcher at family search told me that the surname "White" has the same meaning or is pronounced Spruill according to a surname dictionary/reference book that she allegedly had there. No other researcher that I have asked to confirm this has heard this before.

As you now know in 1900 you see Aaron living with his younger brother George and thier spouses, but you won't find another Aaron and Maggie anywhere else.

Maggie seems to disappears from the face of the earth, then in 1910 you see Aaron with TWO young children listed as BOARDERS with the Hill surname living with Aaron, new wife Jeanette "Jennie" Hatcher-Williams-Hill and her parents the Hatchers. I don't know what happened to the 7 month old baby Wilmer L. Hill either after that point in time. Jennie is later listed as Jermans mother but she is not his biological mother as Jennies parents indicated on the 1910 census report. What happened to Aarons first wife Maggie??

Addtionally, if Aaron is listed as being 50 years old in the 1910 Census his birthdate would have to be on or about 1860!!!!

See what I mean? What say you??

I pray that someone here is either related or has information regarding my Alston, Spruill, Hill family members.

Hi there,

great to find this group!! I've traced my maternal ggfather Aaron hill back to 1880. He married my ggrandmother Maggie Spruill in Raliegh 1886. Maggie was rumored to be caucasian or mulatto because Aaron was a darker indian complextion man its also rumored that Maggies family pressured her leave Aaron and give up thier child Jerman Everett Hill (my grandfather). I see them married and living with Aarons brother George in 1900 in Raliegh then Maggie just disappears. I cant seem to find her origin or her death.I then see Aaron remarried and living with his inlaws and two small children: his son Jerman Hill and a 7month old baby named Wilmer L. Hill I don't know what became of this baby either.

My grandfather Jerman Hill met and married Mary F. Alston of Chadbourn NC. Mary's parents were Matthew and Maybelle/bettie Alston and her grandfather was Nelson Alston who was born 1846 Shocco, Warren, North Carolina and his parents names were Adam and Delia Alston. I found Nelson spending time with relatives over his life time in Tennessee, Virgina and in several parts of NC. Nelson lived until his late 80's.

If anyone can shed some light on who else maybe related to us it would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for documents on Zachariah Ellis who moved to Oglethorpe County Georgia in early 1800. His mother-in-law Mary Hawkins (widow of John Hawkins) also moved to Oglethorpe in early 1800 as well as his brother-in-law James Fisher Gordon. They all moved from Mecklenburg County North Carolina. Mary Hawkins daughter Mary Bullock, wife of Nathaniel and Wyatt Hawkins and his wife Frances (Burford) were also living there. These families were originally in Warren and Granville County North Carolina.

The one I have was murdered in Tierra del Fuego after being kidnapped by a group of native indians. From what I have read he was trading in the area when he went to the rescue of some English sailors and got taken away. This was in 1847. Could it be the one you are looking for?
