I discovered Stephen Lee in the Freedmen's Bureau Report of Outrages by Blacks against Whites in the State of North Carolina, for the 15 days ending Nov. 30, 1867. Nov. 9 in Plymouth. Stephen Lee against Jno M. Bateman, Sheriff. Nature of the outrage: shooting with gun. Remarks: Bateman was in the discharge of his official duties at the time.

I found the court case: State vs Stephen Lee} shooting with intent to kill. He found guilty. There was no sentencing.
(Washinton County Clerk of Superior Court Minute docket. Feb. 24, 1871

He was married to Mariah Gilliam. I found Mariah in the census but was not able to find Stephen in any other records. Any suggestions on finding Stephen will be appreciated.
