Hello, Im actually looking for some information on the Clagon Family as well. In the 1870 census there was a Phoeby Clagon (black)along with her daughter Macey Clagon and Edward Clagon who was listed under Smith Clagon's family. I believe she may have been a former slave for his family. I check his slave schedule for 1860 and I saw a woman who was close to the same age Pheoby would have been. Is there any documentation or will that names his slaves?

Hi Nancy,
I'm so glad that you could clear up the name if Jimma for me! I had found his name spelled several different ways-but in a personal letter from Nellie Sarah Patrick (deceased), she indicated that the name was something very close to your correction. During a research trip to NC,Lois Krawczyk in Washington County showed me a picture of Lela's brothers-Carl, Hubert and David. Ola Chesson Patrick also remembers these 3 young men. I have several notes on them from an interview with Mrs. Patrick.
Thank you again and stay in touch!
Regards,
Patsy Campbell
pcampbel@henderson.net
Harold,
There were several Doctrine Davenports in the Washington County area at the time you are asking about. One Doctrine Davenport, the son of Celia Ann Spruill and James M. Davenport was married to a Sarah Jane. Census records and his death Certificate indicate that he was born April 8, 1858. He was living in Washington County with his family in 1900. He died in Edenton in 1937 and is buried in Beaver Hill Cemetery. My mother remembers him as living in Edenton. This Doctrine Davenport has numerous connections with the families you mentioned. If you think this is the gentleman you are looking for and I can be of further help, I will be happy to add more information.

I am interested in Joshua B. Davenport. A friend gave me a letter written to Joshua B. Davenport in 1864 concerning some slaves that were being boarded by a Farley Ellis in Salisbury, NC. It is a very interesting letter because it details how much it was costing Ellis to board the slaves. The letter was written by a friend of Davenport. I was wondering if any of your papers would have information pertaining to Ellis or any friends of Davenport in the Salisbury area.

His name was Darryl Moore. He was est. born in 1950-1951. He lived with his Mother in Bayshore, New York on Long Island and attended Bayshore high school from 1965-1970. My Mother dated him at Bayshore High School and her name was Laurel Middleton. She passed away in 1978 when I was 8 and always told me that she would tell me about my father when I turned 18. Unforntunately, she wasnt here on my 18th birthday.
I only know that he was originally from North Carolina and his family moved to New York. My email is amiddla@yahoo.com. I would appreciate any information. Thank you.

Looking for Fisher family connections in the Tyrrell, Washington and Currituck County area. There was a Daniel Fisher in Currituck in early 1800 censuses. The story is that my Daniel Fisher's family were seafaring people who had commercial ships in trade in the French and Spanish ports in the Caribbean. If anyone has suggestions on where to find more about ships and seamen in pre-Revolutionary NC, I would certainly appreciate them.

I don't know if there is any relationship with the Philadelphia Joshua Fisher and Sons firm. Those Fishers were Quakers who had ships of trade.

Julia Armstrong's father John Harden Armstrong was a ship's captain, and her mother, Mary Swain, came from another sailing family. The Armstrong family ancestors had owned property on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and the Swains had settled Nantucket, Massachusetts.

There were Parramores in Tyrrell County, from the 1700s into the 1800s. There's even a cemetery, Paramour Cemetery, in the Riders Creek area of Tyrrell (on the same road as the Malachi Chapel Baptist Church). There are no marked graves with that name, though.
If you go to the Tyrrell County, NC GenWeb site, you can find some Parramore marriages, and a bit of other information, but there weren't a lot of people there with that name:
http://www.ncgenweb.us/tyrrell/TYRRELL.HTM

By the way, Washington County was formed in 1799 from Tyrrell County, so a few families with that name did end up in Washington County, (Joseph and Thomas Parrymour), but by 1850, there was no-one in the census with that last name.

An area that became Tenn was originally named Washington County, but that county was dissolved before 1799, which was when the present-day Washington County, NC was formed from Tyrrell County (more land was annexed in 1801 from Tyrrell to Washington). Washington County, NC is on the east coast, south of the Albemarle Sound. It's only relationship to the county that used to exist is that they have the same name.

This site has a brief historical background on Tenn:
http://www.tngenweb.org/pre1796/

One problem for you is that a lot of people from North Carolina migrated west and settled in Tenn - they came from all over - there were some who left Tyrrell County prior to 1799, and went there, then more left after 1800 (some from Tyrrell County, some from Washington County). Given the dates you mention, you might have better luck posting a query on the Tyrrell County forum instead of here, since your husband's ancestor was in Tenn before modern day Washington County was even formed. You might want to put a query in at every NC county that was in existence between 1775 and 1800, covering the birth year and the first year you know he was in Tenn. You can find a listing of the dates when counties were formed, and which other counties they might have been formed out of, here:

http://www.ncgenweb.us/county-list

Good luck.
I am at a loss for words. I have desperately been trying to locate my husbands 4 x Great Grandfather. He lived in Washington County, TN most of his life before dying in Cocke County and is buried there. I know that Washington Co. TN used to be Washington County North Carolina. He was born in North Carolina, and I suspect it was Washington County.I have him first appearing in Washington County Tennessee in 1800 as his oldest son was born there. His name was Abraham Tinker and he married a lady named Polly we do not know her last name. It was not Polly Hobday as some sources try to attribute it to being. She married Edward Tinker of Craven Co. NC, no relation between the two. Now, Abraham was born 1 Oct. 1775 in North Carolina. I do not really know where. Just goin on a hunch that it may have been Old Washington County, North Carolina. Any thoughts?

(from NC Historical & Genealogical Records)

"North Caroline Headrights - A List of Names, 1663 - 1744" pg. 30

p. 225 {CCR 102} Anthony Alexander proves his right to two hundred acres of land by the Importation of himself, An his Wife Anthony his son and Jno. Mason (General Court, 28 July 1698)

Anthony and Ann appear to have had 19 children. Before they moved to the NJ/NY area, they lived on Somerset Plantation with their mother Mary. I have no info on their father, as in those days families were separted from the fathers. If anyone has any information on their birthplace of family, please contact me.

Very early on, there was a Washington County that encompassed most of what is now eastern Tennessee (NC ceded it's lands there to the U.S. government in 1790). However, it had ceased to be by the time Washington County in the eastern part of the state (the one covered by this message board) was formed from Tyrrell County in 1799. Tyrrell then went on to cede more land to Washington County in 1801.

Very confusing as same name, but different counties at different times.

"Widowed" husband Penticost was living with "a nephew", Irvin Hughes in 1880 in Bakersville, Mitchell, North Carolina.

I am posting to this board because I heard Washington County at one point in the last quarter of the 1700s, covered the entire state of Tennessee.

Any large library should have a genealogy section/room. If your local library does not have the book, request they do an inter-library loan and get the book for you from another library. I have done that a number of times.

You might also try Google Books to see if it's online; also try MARS http://mars.archives.ncdcr.gov/BasicSearch.aspx and http://digital.lib.ecu.edu/historyfiction/

Good luck with your research.

Jean

Thank you, My cousin has a Bible that is dated around 1679 and we were looking at it and even though it is faded we could see Jacob, Joseph, William Jacob, John H perry. Oher names William and Margaret Smith son Thomas b Aug 18, 1804 My grgrgrgrandmother Hester Smith b 1811 January 9th to william and Margaret Smith. Married William Perry, who I think is son of Jacob Perry as he is living on the census right below a widowed Hester and family. Earlier entries were very hard to read names were Calloways, Harmons, Longs. Joshua Long, son of William and A___ Long b 25th of Nov 1736 was the earliest. The bible is disintegrating and is in a boot box. I will post these names separately. We are also going to have someone participate in the DNA study.Jean, do you know where I can view the book "History of Perquiman Co.? I will check at Cincinnati Library. Rita

My guess is that all the Perry's in northeast NC were descendants of Phillip Perry who settled in the Isle of Wight Co., VA. He left his will there 9 Oct 1669. Some of Phillip's children, James, Jacob & Joseph moved to NC.

An earlier Perry, Thomas (age 34), emigrated to VA in the "Bonaventure" Jan 1634 with Dorothy age 36 & Ben age 4.

I recommend you look through the book "The History of Perquimans Co." for more on the Perry family. Another source is "Memories and Records of Eastern North Carolina."

Jean

My parents lived briefly in Plymouth back in the late 40s. While there, my mother gave birth to a full-term stillborn son. I never knew the date, only that it was when my other brother "was a little fellow." Since my brother's birthday is April 1944, I can put the stillborn between 1945 - 1947. My parents had left Plymouth by 1948. The child was not given a name, and I have no information on burial.

Does anyone know the procedure for searching for a stillborn record in NC? With given name and no birth date, I'm not sure what to do.

Hi,

Good news and bad news. The good news is that I've got digital images of the marriage licenses for both couples. An interesting side note there - Jessie Halsey was the man who put up the money for each license, AND he was a witness to each marriage.

Good news is that for Philip McRae and Annie Davis, there were names for his parents - looks to be Tom or Wm. McRae and Henrietta McRae for Philip, both deceased. For Annie, only the name of her mother was given - Sue Davis, but it is indicated on the license that her father is deceased. Witnesses were Jessie Halsey, Garfield Hart, and Jeremy or Jenny Credle, and they were married by Elder J. R. Spencer. I'm not 100% certain that Hart is the correct surname for Garfield - you might be able to read the handwriting better than I can. There is nothing put for where the witnesses lived.

As for Mack Barnes and Mary Day - that's the bad news one. He is listed as Mack Bond, but nothing is shown for his parents, not even any indication if they were living or dead. For Mary, it looks to be Malert and Adline Day, with no info as to if each one is still living. I'm guessing on the Malert part, as the clerk's handwriting isn't all that great. Witnesses were Jessie Halsey, Plymouth, NC; John Moore, Plymouth, NC; and it looks like Frank Bond or Bowen, Washington, NC.

My e-mail is glroberts@cox.net - send me an e-mail and I'll get those digital images to you.

And two other things - my aunt mentioned to me that in a recent edition of "The Roanoke Beacon", there was an interview with a woman who was 100 years old or so, and she was a McRae, and African-American. You can find the phone number for the newspaper online, so you might be able to get a copy - also, my aunt works with a woman who is married to a McRae, and she offered to pass along a message if you wanted to get in contact to ask about the family.

The other thing - as I was asking for assistance from the woman who was working in the Register of Deeds office, before I ever mentioned that Mack's name seemed to change from Bond to Barnes, she told me that recently, a man had come in looking for information on his family - and it was a Bond/Barnes name change, and he was also African-American. Unfortunately, he didn't leave his name with her.

I had noticed before that on the 1920 Federal Census, the household of Mack Bond (ancestry has him indexed as Bona) is shown with an Adline Bond, mother - so that's got to be Mary's mother, as that does match the name on the marriage license and what you have on Mary. And the father's name of Motier is close to the name on the marriage license. Going to the Marriage database on the Washington County, GenWeb page, the marriage license for Motier and Adline does give his parents as Motier Day and Presilla Day, of Halifax County (which you already knew Motier was from there), and that the mother was still living as of the date of the license - January 29, 1885.

Mack's name change seems to have varied - some of the children seem to have the last name of Barnes, and some Bond, spread throughout the years. There's one in 1911 who is a Barnes, and then some in the 19-teens, who have Bond, as well as one daughter born in 1923. I'm wondering if it might be a case where he didn't change his name, but perhaps clerk's had a difficult time understanding him - I could see how Barnes could be heard as Bond. That area of North Carolina has a very distinct accent, and there are times when I'm visiting relatives in Creswell and have to think hard about what they're telling me because I can't always understand them because of the accent.
hello once again. Wow thanks for the information. I barely remember my great- grandmother Mary Barnes. As long as I can recall we were the Barnes but I have seen a school record of my grand mother as Lossie Bonds. Now I have a lot of memories of my great grandmother Annie Mae. I never knew either husband but she spelled her last name as McCray. I am learning that this not an exact science. Again I thank you for the taking the time and helping out. The puzzle is slowly coming together. All help is needed and welcomed. Sherrie

Over at Family Search, they've got dates for the marriages of Mack Bond and Mary Day (I noticed in census records and birth records that he goes from being Mack Bond to being Mack Barnes - can't tell yet if that's a deliberate name change or just that people misheard his last name of Barnes and wrote Bond) and Philip McRae and Annie Davis. Mack and Mary's marriage date is 30 May 1911, and Philip and Annie's date is 28 Feb 1915. Hopefully, the licenses will show parents for the men.
