Hello Anita. My name is Sarah Johnson Aaron and Jeremiah Hughes was my 3 times great grandfather. I would love to know all you have on him. On findagrave.com. it has him and Two Horse thought to have been buried at The Old Zion Church Cemetery on Upper Pig Pen Road. From the memorial on the findagrave.com site, Two Horse was Sioux Indian.

Can anyone shed some light on David Smith living in Yancey County in 1850 and 1860 with his wife Elizabeth.

I know they had three daughters:
Sarah Sallie Smith (Married William Frazier Hall)
Malinda Smith(Married Greenberry Silver)
Hannah Smith (Mack Silas McCurry)

Many genealogist associate this David Smith with the one from Lincoln County who married Elizabeth Arendt, this is not the case. My David Smith is found in 1850 and 1860 living in Yancey County, not in Lincoln County.

Another Marriage is to Elizabeth Idol on Jan 15 1803. I do not believe this is this David Smith either as he dies in 1823 according to this article

http://whitlockfamilyassociation.com.s3.amazonaws.com/source...

Our David supposedly came from New Jersey as it states on the 1860 census. He was born abt 1785 and his wife abt 1786.

Any Thoughts!

Thanks

I descend from Andy Hall, Billy's last child by his first wife, Sally Smith. Based on family stories I've heard, Billy Hall's father was a Frazier. A number of years ago, I took a DNA test through Family Tree DNA, (which uses DNA to help with genealogy), and had a very strong match with a Frazier gentleman who lives near Winston Salem. To make a long story short, after years of DNA testing of a number of Halls who descend from Billy and a number of Fraziers, my best guess is that Billy's father was a man named "John Frazier" from Stokes County. Billy's mother was a Hall who, I think, lived around Salisbury, NC. Still trying to identify her. Also looking for male relatives with the surname Hall who descend from Billy who might be interested in taking the DNA genealogy test as well. The need to be direct male descendants, as the chromosome that is tested and compared is only passed from father to son, to son, to son, etc..
Also her possible brother Alfred Vaughn. All these people lived in Burke/Yancey/Mitchell county circa years 1810-1870.

Any further recommendations also greatly appreciated in this search : ).

I should have posted this update a long time ago, but have been away from the research for a while.

I do find in the Superior Court Minutes of Yancey County for 1881-1890 that Axey apparently finally filed for divorce in 1889. In the same group of minutes are various legal proceedings brought by her grown sons against their father John Henry; wouldn't be surprised if her older boys didn't encourage her to finally divorce the old scoundrel at the same time they were going after him!

I extrapolated her DOD from the last official recording (1889) and her son David's marriage license wherein he states his mother is deceased (1902).

I have not been able to discover where Axey is buried. John is buried up at Ogle Meadows, apparently all by himself. If anyone has even the slightest hint about where she may be buried it would be greatly appreciated.

Axey was the daughter of Rev. Samuel Honeycutt and Bridget Hampton. John was the son of Rev. John Wheeler and Rhoda Ray.

Axey Mariah HONEYCUTT (b. abt. 1837), married John Henry WHEELER (b. 05 Nov 1836) in Yancey County on 18 Apr 1853. Long story short, 27 years and 11 children later, John Henry left Axey in about 1880 for Sarah Matilda Duncan Guthery, whom he finally married in 1890. Family lore says that when John Henry left, Axey took the 4 youngest children still at home and "went to Tennessee" to live for a while with their son Samuel Harrison Wheeler, who would have been about 16 or 17 at that time. Supposedly she returned to Yancey Co. at some point. No record has been found in Yancey Co. of a divorce for Axey Mariah and John Henry. Does anyone have any clues as to what happened to Axey Mariah Honeycutt Wheeler? Any help or clues would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

Did any of these sons of Thomas Ray live in Mississippi at one time? Did any of the three boys have a son named James C. Ray born on 4th July 1821 in Mississippi? I have been trying to locate the parents and siblings of my great-great grandfather James C. Ray for the past 13 years. No luck so far, and I have almost come to the conclusion that perhaps my great-great grandfather James C. Ray was an orphan.

Thank you for your time and assistance.
Lucinda,
we have to be related. My Phillips line lived in Mars Hill, NC from 1814 or even before but that's all I can find. But I would say that Ephraim Phillips and Reuben Keith Phillips were cousins. The distance from Egypt-Yancey and Mars Hill(originally Buncombe county but now Madison) is only a few miles. I hope some day soon I can find a connection.
Thank you again,
Ryan

Thanks for the quick response, Paul. If I may I'm going to send you my Cresawn file by email. Would be glad for you to suggest any corrections or additions. I've just included the excellent information from your article about the Cresawn/Foster Family and the Civil War.

I started today by looking for the father of Carson Tilmon Cresawn because I recently met a relation of his. Seems it may be Levi? But it's a bit murky with their relation to the Snipes.

Andrew, if I'm calculating correctly, was my ggggrandfather, so what does that make me? Probably a lot older than you!

There was a previous reply about contacting John Silver which gave an e-mail address. If this is the JS who has cone EXTENSIVE research on the Silver family, he is deceased. You should contact his cousin, Clarence "Til" Tillery (ctillery2@triad.rr.com) who began the reserach and gave it to John to continue. Til has all John Silver's records, and is a Silver Family genealogist. He most likely can help you. Amy Tillery (Mrs. Clarence Tillery) Greensboro, NC

Burton came to Yancey County from Unicoi County Tennessee with his wife Mary Foster Chrisawn. Burton's sister Rebecca married a brother of Mary Foster Kennedy Foster. Rebecca remained in Unicoi. Rebecca and Kennedy had children that fought for the union army in the Civil War. Burton enlisted in the confederate army. He is buried at Chrisawn cemetery in Yancey county. Me and my brother maintain that cemetery now. Burton's father was David Chrisawn and his mother was named Mary but nobody seems to know her maiden name. Burtons grandfather was Andrew, A revolutionary war veteran who is buried in McDowell County with his wife Lucy Sims Chrisawn. I have all kinds of documents regarding the family if you care to see them. Do you have any pictures of Wllards, Charles or any other Chrisawns? I am always looking for those.

I'd like to know more about where the Chrisawns came from prior to Burton. I have found references to him, but beyond that, not really anything.

We have Bailey members who are connected to Crisson, Kershawn, Kersaun (various spellings) and also found Ballew, Balleu, and Bailey are most likely descended from the Baliol family. Our Kersaun, Crisson, etc and Bailey families settled in North Carolina. Any chance your ancestors were in North Carolina, specifically Yancey, Buncombe, Mitchell (Green mountain, Jacks Creek)? I have the Toe River Book by Lloyd Bailey. I will check to see if your McDowell or Ballew is in there.
