Hi Lynne! I do not know if there is a definite connection to a Downing line (my lines are Still & Asbell), but I hope to prove there is. I found evidence in "History of Cherokees, their Families & Geneology" written by Emmett Starr of a relationship between the Stills and Downings; however, I have not found my line, which is Jesse Still (wife unknown), his daughter Nellie Matilda Still (md. Pierce Asbell 24 Dec 1824 in Estill Co, KY). Please let me know ur Downing lines and I will pursue them with u for a connection. Have been trying to prove Nellie was part Cherokee for over 10 years Tx Donna C
