Seeking information on the family of Peter P. and Anna (Wittenberg) Engbrecht, who settled near Golden Valley, North Dakota, around 1904. They had nine children. The following settled in and around Golden Valley and Hazen: Jacob Engbrecht, John Peter Engbrecht, Isaac Engbrecht, Anna, Mrs. John Kaufman, and Helena, Mrs. Cornelius Loewen. Peter P. Engbrecht had a farm between Golden Valley and Zap. He died in 1923, and Anna in 1929. Members of the Canada and Turner County, South Dakota Engbrecht families are suspected to be relatives, but no connection has yet been established. The family originated in the Molotschna Colony (Mennonite) of South Russia.

I am looking for information reagarding the family of Michael NEUMANN married to Louisa GROSS. I would like to know if Louisa GROSS was the daughter of Martin GROSS also of Stanton area.

I would also like to get Michael and Louisa's marriage date and place. I do not know for sure if they married in the US or in Russia before they came here. I have searched the Ellis Island site for them, according to the 1920 census and naturalization papers they came to the US in 1893 through New York.

I need some help and/or advice on how to proceed in finding more information on these families. Dorothy is the daughter of Prokop and Christine. They came to Mercer County in 1904 from Russia. On the Ellis Island records Prokop listed Koratscha as his home land. I cannot find if this is a city or state, whether it is in Russia or the Ukraine. I know they were farmers. Dorothy visited her first cousin in 1938 in Muscatine, Iowa and died of a heart attack. I have found these families in the 1920 census but haven't checked 1930 as of yet. Where could I write to find obituaries. Other names listed in Dorothy's obit were Mrs. John Roth, Mrs. John Wild, August Miller some of her 13 children; also sister Mrs. Louisa Link, brothers Frank and August Kasper; also aunts, Mrs. Joseph Bower and Mrs. Rosie Reinboldt. Any help and advice would be appreciated. Prokop was my great-grandfather's brother. My great-grandfather came from Austria in 1850 by himself.

I have found my great uncle, Earl W. Poulson, listed as Earl W. Polson in the 1910 census for Mercer County. I would like any information pertaining to him that can be found. However, my real search is for his father, Alfred J. Poulson, who died in 1911 and is not in the family plot in Goodrich and it has occurred to me that he may have been visiting one of his children when he died, August 13, 1911 and was buried somewhere else.

I have occasionally found them listed in the census as Paulson rather than Poulson. Any information would be appreciated.

Obituary: Milo Nathan Olds (1861-1920)

Milo Nathan Olds was born at Spring Valley, Minnesota, October 28, 1861; and died at Jamestown, North Dakota. , December 31, 1920 at 10:07 a. m. of pneumonia. Age, 59 years, 2 months and 3 days.

He moved to Milbank, South Dakota, with his parents, in 1882. He was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Venner, at Milbank in 1887. Five children were born to this union: Nathan Olds, on the home place at Stanton, North Dakota; Arthur Olds, of Wolf Point, Montana; Mrs. Edith Janssen, of Stanton, North Dakota; Harry Olds, of Stanton; and Leo, at home with his mother. Will Olds died during the flu epidemic in 1918 at the age of 20 years.

Mr. Olds and his family moved to Stanton, North Dakota in 1903, where he homesteaded. He lived on the farm until after his health failed. The first stroke of paralysis was in January, 1917, and was afterwards unable to talk, although able to get around the house. He left the farm in July, 1917, moving into Stanton. He contracted the flu in 1918 and failed from that time, and in 1919 he was taken to the hospital in Jamestown, North Dakota, where he remained until death called him

His remains were brought to Spring Valley for interment. The funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:30 p. m.

His wife and son, Leo, and daughter, Mrs. Janssen, accompanied the remains to Spring Valley. His sons, Nathan and Harry, were unable to come, being in ill health. Arthur Olds was expected but did not reach here.

Seeking clarification on the Mercer County Cemetery Index. I show Theodor Edward Ellwein (d. September 22, 1907) buried in St. Petrus Gemeinde Cemetery. The Index lists him as the child of "Wilhelm and Eremlie (Keuryf) Ellwein". Is it possible that this is a typo? My great-grandparents in the area were Wilhelm and Emelia (Kempf) Ellwein. Also, if this is their son, he is another "missing" sibling I didn't know my grandfather had.

Any insight would be much appreciated!!

Seeking information on the death of Hugo ELLWEIN, child of Wilhelm and Emelia ELLWEIN. He appears on the 1910 census at the age of 2, but is not listed with the family on the 1920 census. I do not show him in the Mercer County Cemetery Index, which seems odd. Any ideas as to why not if he did indeed die?

I am trying to locate the death record and burial place of a Mark Leonard Walker born 1892 in Almonte, Ont. Canada but who emigrated to Mandan around 1909. I have a 1930 census record that he lived in ZAP with his wife Lillian (Mooney) Walker and managed a garage. Perhaps someone in the area knows when and where he was buried. I don't believe there were any children from the marriage.

Frank Pitzer, b 1884, Mandan,Morton,ND, married to
Anna Ouren, b 1896, Huff?, ND.

They lived in Beulah in the 30's at least, Frank owned Frank Pitzers General Store, then I think a Ford garage, and was one of 3 mgr's of the Beulah Miners semi-pro baseball team.

Frank & Anna also had a roomer as of 1930 by the name of Olaf Dahl, age 18 that I believe might have worked as a clerk in his general store.

Any info is appreciated

Born in Argentina, her parents came to the USA from South Russia about 1904?? But because of his bad eyesight was turned away. They then went to Argentina by boat where Christina/Christine was born, also Minnie we believe. They came back here, and were let into the country and went to North Dakota. They settled in Dodge, ND
Suss was her married name. Hoping someone else is researching this line I'd like to get a birthdate for her and her sister Minnie.

I am trying to find the ancestors of Timotha and Albina Hoffman from Hazen or Manadan, Mercer Co. ND. The childrens names I have are: Katie, Joe, Jack, Eva, Mary, Lucy or Ledvina, Mike. In 1905, he lived in Volga, Brookings County, South Dakota. In 1920, they moved to Zap, Mercer County, North Dakota.

Mercer County 1900, 1910 Census

I have been looking for my grandfather, August Borner and grandfather Paul Borner who lived in Stanton, Mercer County, ND for many years. I have not been able to locate them on the 1900 and 1910 census. The 1920 census for Stanton shows it as ED 128, T145, R84. Does it follow that 1910 and 1900 would have been the same? I find some sheets marked Stanton with a line drawn through it and a different Township and Range. The highest the ED goes is 95. I am beginning to think that Stanton’s records were lost in the two separate fires that occurred at their “City Hall.” Can anyone shed any light on what is going on here?

The 1900 census shows Elisabeth Bittner and her husband,
George Bauer/Baur in Huthinson, SD. They moved, I am told,
to Blue Grass, SD, then to Hazen in 1927.
The children were: Edward, John, Christiana, Julius,
Teophil/Theophil, Lea, Andrew and Christian.(born from
1881-1898)
I would like to learn more about my great grandmother's

I am seeking information on Arthur Revoir born August 03, 1888. He married Nelie Grande born in Norway on January 03, 1899. This is all I have on Arthur Revoir for his birth. He later went to Montana and raised a family with Nelie in the early 1900's. There first daughter was born in 1917. Any info will be helpful.

Am trying to find the correct Katherina GOEHRING. I have a Katherina GOEHRING in Mercer County that died in 1949 and I have a Katherina GOEHRING that died in Wells County in 1932 and without being able to look at actual ecords am unable to know which one would be the correct one. She was Katherina (MASHIAN) GOEHRING married to Philip GOEHRING. They farmed in Lincoln Valley for a time though how long I do not know except that they were still there in 1918. Joseph Teske Dead:

Passed Away Wednesday Night, From Heart Failure.

This community was shocked today when the news was learned that Joseph Teske, one of the old settlers of Mercer county had suddenly passed away from heart failure. He has been slightly indisposed for the past month, but his condition was not considered in the least serious, and the news of his sudden demise came as a distinct shock.

The deceased, who was a native of South Russia, was 59 years of age and leaves a wife, 9 children and 3 brothers to mourn his death.

He came to Mercer county from South Dakota about 15 years ago and took a homestead north of Buelah and has resided there up to the present time. He was one of Mercer County's best citizens, and a character who will be greatly missed from the community.

Funeral services will be held a the German Reformed Church north of Beulah, next Sunday.

The Independent extends sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
