Hi there

I am also connected to Liam Raftis (not my direct line but through his wife Lilian). I was actually googling his name and found your post.

My mum mentioned his name and said he was a significant person in Waterford and that he was related to our side some how.

Lilian was the niece of my great grandfather Daniel Dowling and brother of Lilian's father Henry.

Here is the link to the North Dakota Department of Health Public Death Index.

https://secure.apps.state.nd.us/doh/certificates/deathCertSe...

It only takes exact spelling (I suggest only using last name) and only takes one decade at a time, as in: 01/01/1890 - 01/01/1900.

Here is the link to the North Dakota volunteer-run genweb project site.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ndgenweb/

Each county in the U.S. has a volunteer who gathers and posts information, links to area history, and usually posts lookup volunteers.

The site also includes general North Dakota databases. I don't find John or Arthur Gunder in the biography database. I do, however, find that Halvor THOE is included in a Ramsey County book:

http://library.ndsu.edu/db/biography/results

You may be able to find a lookup volunteer on the Ramsey County genweb site who can see what that entry says, and whether this Halvor / Halver is related to John or Arthur Gunder.

There are many other databases on that site which might be helpful to you.

Good luck

Beth
not related

find a grave for Arthur Gunder Thoe..... I haven't gotten his death certificate. I will have to research where specifically to mail and request that...... I will have to look to find a census to see when John arrived. I couldn't make any connections to other family members... Having those names will help.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=websearch-4104...

The 1915 Census of North Dakota, lists the Thoes next to the Wegges (both my husband's grandmother's direct line)....
I was told Shirley Thoe Bagge Skeim's (married twice) father's name was Gunder Thoe. It is through research that I have found the name Arthur with it. This census has John S., Arthur G. (Shirley's father), Lydia (Shirley's mother), Shirley is listed as Madeline S. (but Madeline is her middle name), and Lucel, (which is the other sister Ardis Lucille). The Wegges listed right below them on the census are also my husband's family. Link below.

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

1885 Dakota Territory census index:

38-004-23 Thoe, John S. 27 Head Farmer Norway Ramsey

38-004-24 Thoe, Emma G. 18 Wife MN Ramsey

38-004-25 Thoe, Samuel T. 64 Head Farmer Norway Ramsey

38-004-26 Thoe, Martha J. 60 Wife Norway Ramsey

38-004-27 Thoe, Halver 24 Son Farmer Norway Ramsey

I think it possible, because of the numerical listing of these individuals, that Samuel and Martha are relatives, possibly parents of John, and that Halver Thoe is John's brother.

A possible match for the above Halver THOE is found in the 1900 census: Minnewaukan, Ramsey, North Dakota. His father is living with him; his name is transcribed as Swaynam THOE.

I will check more records.

Beth
not related

Could you please list more information? You mention you have found a census record with Arthur Gunder THOE's mother listed as Emma.

Are you referring to the 1900 North Dakota, Ramsey County, Devils Lake census? This census tells us that John S. and Emma G. THOE have been married just 5 years. She was born in Minnesota. Gunder J. is listed as the son of John, was born 14 years earlier. The birth date of January 1886 fits with the Arthur Gunder THOE you are researching.

It would have been helpful if you had posted the information from that census. Do you have any other records for the family that might help determine who Arthur Gunder's mother was? Where was the family living in the mid-1880s?

Have you sent for Arthur Gunder's death certificate? It should have his mother's name on it.

re: John Thoe. When was he born? What do census records say was his approximate date of entry to the U.S.

fyi: In searching for G.A.'s mother, I find no THOE death between 1885 and 1905 in the North Dakota Public Death Index. I don't find a good match on findagrave.com.

If you post more info, I'd be happy to continue searching.

Sorry. Going through old posts and found this message. My Grandfather Anton Joseph Zahn immigrated to Napoleon, ND from Prussia. His first wife died and I know one of his children was Elizabeth Zahn married to a Glatt in later life. After his first wife died he married my Grandmother Brigitta Fettig who had immigrated from Odessa, Russia. Her married name was Schwan and she was a widow with three children. Ben, Eva and Agatha. Don't know if this will help.

John Russell born Canada 1864/immigrates to USA about 1884

I desperatley need help !
I am looking for my gg,grandparents son who immigrated to the US sometime after 1881.
The last Canadaian Cenus he is on in Canada,is the Canada Federal Census for 1881.

He was born in Ontario, Canada and his parents John Russell and Margaret Russell were both born in Scotland.
I have no midle name for John nor do I have a marriage for him. Making searching for him most difficult.

I do have documentation that at some point he was in Boise County, Idaho.
I have reason to believe he crossed into North Dakota before arriving at Idaho County. He was in Idaho or somewhere close by where he picked up his mail at Ola, Idaho in the years 1893 to 1912.

I believe he may have gone back to Northern US.
Perhaps North or South Dakota.
His older brother Robert Russell (1857 )who immigrated to the US before him crossed into North Dakota where he took up residence for awhile before settling in Morrison County,
MN, USA.
I have searched th MN, Census but while coming up with some of his first cousins, I haven't come up with John.

John's siblings names wich may be helpful if he had a family of his own, were: Robert MN USA / Lizzie, Alberta, Canada / Mary, British Columbia, Canada / James, Ontairo, Canada / Hugh, Ontario, Canada / William .

I am up against a brickwall because I cannot find a John Russell born in Canada about 1863 or 1864, with parents born in Scotland on any US Federal Census !

I realize the birth year could be off in the US Census, which only adds to the confusion !

If anyone can help or recognizes this person in their tree,I would really appreciate hearing from you.

Thoe of North Dakota

I am looking for information on Arthur Gunder Thoe, who was born in North Dakota in 1885 and died in Traill County North Dakota in 1918. I believe his father's name was John. I have found census' with Emma listed as mother, but not sure if stepmother. I am also trying to find out if A. Gunder had any siblings... or information on siblings of John Thoe. A. Gunder Thoe married Lydia Swenson and had two daughers, including Shirley (my relative) and Ardis. I am interested in finding John in any manifest and where they came from in Norway.

This is the same Anna Magelky I'm interested in.
Seeking to find if the 1930 census entry is the same or different Anna Magelky from the other entires you referenced. The Wilbert has all the appearence of being the child of the Anna in the 1930 census.
As I mentioned they disappear after this census and I can find no other records of them.
The Anna (Magekly) Rountree you mention I have records for before 1930 and then 1937 to 1939 in Chicago (personal dated photos). She disappears again in 1940. and I can affirm she was in Los Angeles from 1942 on.
Seeking to know if these two Anna Magelkys are the same person. If so, I have an unknown relative (possibly deceased now) that was never talked about and needs to be traced.
The 1921 to 1942 years are the blanks to be filled in.
Thanks

You are trying to determine whether the Anna MAGELKY in the Cass County 1930 census is the same woman with that name who married Edward ROUNTREE?

She is included in one Ancestry.com family tree posted by "fijimom". This person gives her parents as Martin MAGELKY and Katherina JASSMANN. The mother's maiden name matches with the Social Security Death Index information for Anna ROUNTREE in California.

Anna MAGELKY is included in the South Dakota Birth Records:

http://apps.sd.gov/applications/PH14Over100BirthRec/searchre...

Birth Information for ANNA MAGELKY
(State File Number: 4007)

File Date: 12/15/1905
Sex: F
Birth Date: 12/03/1905
County: HUTCHINSON
Mother's Name: KATHERINA JASSMAN
Father's Name: MARTIN MAGELKY

You don't post what other information you have on this MAGELKY family before the 1930 census. I don't want to repeat research you have already done.

A quick search of sites other than Ancestry.com for MAGELKY in the Dakotas, found while searching for Anna and Wilbert:

Dunn County, ND, BLM records:

MAGELKY Andina
MAGELKY Martin
MAGELKY Mathias

Morton County, ND, burials:

MAGELKY / MAGELKI/ MAGILKE / MAGELKE: Melchoir, Katharina, Melchoir Jr., Kathryn, Catherine, elizabeth, Joseph, Joseph

Bon Homme County, SD, naturalizations:

MAGELKY Mathias, Russia, arrived 1852 New York

Bon Homme County, SD, delayed births:

MAGELKY Jacob 09/13/1896

Stark County, ND, BLM Records:

MAGELKY George

------------------------

Here is a link to the North Dakota Biography Index Records.
I am so glad you came back and have enjoyed the information we have found so far. I agree with falsterdan that it was completely logical and normal for Lillie to be taken care of by her grandparents when her mother died just after childbirth. Knut definitely seems to have been part of her life by being listed on her marriage certificate and in her obituary.

Are you able to access Lille's obituary on ancestry? I am a bit reluctant to post it here but it does give her daughters names and locations. If you don't have it I can copy it and the information I have found on their addresses and phone numbers and email it to you through ancestry.

Lillie's headstone can be seen on findagrave.com. Just search for Lillie Doyle North Dakota.

Certainly understand not telling your grandmother about Lillie but Lillie's daughters are likely to have pictures and information.

Barbara

Hi again,

Delightful to hear more about your wonderful family!

I searched for Lillie in US census and so far didn't find her. Nellie died when Lillie was born or about then (must check notes to recall), so Knute was a young man, widower, with an infant. It is normal that grandparents stepped in to help.

About Ane Kristine going back to Norway and then selling the farm - well, I was referring to Ane Kristine's possible reaction to life on the farm in MONTANA / NORTH DAKOTA.

Knute immigrated rather late in American immigration history - and by this time many lands to the south and east were taken. He settled in one of the last places to be chosen by immigrants.

You wrote, "I think Ane Kristine enjoyed town life more than farming." (Yes, it appears so, lol.) "Just like Lillie it seems!" I am not sure what that last sentence means. Lillie didn't like farm life??

Anyway - I think you are Norwegian. Is that right? That's personal and you don't have to answer! But if so it is very funny that Barbara and I were looking for Margot in USA, based on how American you sound.

Let's continue on trying to find Lillie descendants.
=========================

Edward Jay Doyle 1919-1992
Buried Fairview Cemetery, Fairview, McKenzie, North Dakota
Find a Grave LINK:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=DO...;

Hi,
yes, this is definitely a story of sturdy and strong-minded individuals. And one I've been very curious about my entire life!

My great grandmother refused to talk about Knut or America, so all we've known up until recently is what I wrote in the last email. But my granndmother has never seemed upset with her father- it does seem he tried to make it "right" for his daughter by setting them up in Molde.

I've always thought of my great grandmother as "the godmother" haha.. She lived in the house she built with my grandmothers family, seemed to have been kinda strict and there was much that was off limits to ask about. But she loved her family very, very much, and could suddenly do things like walk into the room, put a pile of money on the table and say "you should buy a car." And then go upstairs again haha!

You are right. I know all about "normal" family situations usually being anything but mother/father/child. What I meant was that maybe he didn't "send her away" and start a new family, but maybe it was more common for a child in her situation to live with her grandmother. Like you said he was a farmer, probably working long hours. About Ane Kristine going back to Norway and then selling the farm- I think she enjoyed town life more than farming.. Just like Lillie it seems!

I am very interested in finding out about Lillies family- they must be the only people how might be able to tell us about Knut- maybe apart from the man who posted about having letters from Knut.
My grandmother would probably love to see photos, and know about Knut! But since that part of her life has been off limits by choice of her mother I must tread carefully. I think I will continue my research and then see what we do with it. The rest of the family will want to know as we have been totally in the dark about our American side of the family.

Thank you so much for your help! We are so grateful for all all the help we are getting! I wish you could have seen my 89 year old grandmother eagerly scrolling websites and clicking on links for the first time in her life! She's a natural hah!

So great to hear from you. About your grandmother, glad some of the work has been meaningful to her. I appreciate your point about Lillie. Just wondering though about Lilly descendants and stories (or photos) they might have about Knute, which could be so meaningful to your grandmother, like water after a drought. She can't meet Lilly, but perhaps she could meet descendants...just a thought.

I agree that the tombstone suggests Knute had a relationship with Lillie.

He bought a farm for Ane and Margot in Norway???? That surprises me. Funny how the facts have a way of recreating our vision of a situation.

I looked into the geography and history of the area only a teeny bit - but I think they lived in the "high line" area of US bordering Canada. That was a very hard place to live, tough to make a living, only the strong survived there. Is that right? If Ane "didn't like the weather," it could be dust storms, freezing blizzards, no people for miles, poverty, exhausting knuckle-scraping work, and endless, treeless plain were extremely hard for a girl from the fjords of Norway to adjust to.

I found no contact information on that family tree you mention. BUT explore it - maybe you'll find people online who have been researching those lines. That might work.

About Lillie living with her grandparents - was it normal? Normal, how? Families have always been abnormal in that way, including nowadays. In all the family histories I've seen (my own, and as a helper), this always comes up, that some families within a larger extended family do not fit the mode of "father-mother-children." We don't know the truth of this situation of course. Knute seems to have cared for Ane and Margot financially and possibly in other ways as well. From your oral history he does not appear to have abandoned his wife and child. This fact is what leads me to believe that he did not abandon Lillie. Perhaps she lived with her grandparents because that was a better life for her. After all, there she had a woman's guidance, etc. At home, father Knute would have been away all day in the fields, etc. and little Lillie home alone. Then too he left for Norway, perhaps to fetch a new wife and "new mother" for Lillie, and Lillie settled into a family life with her grandparents, and then Ane didn't like it in America, and etc. JUST A THEORY. The descendants might actually know some facts! You know best about grandmother, but perhaps figure out first whether you can find Lillie descendants and see how contact with them might affect grandmother.

This is a very very interesting family history, of sturdy and strong-minded individuals, apparently, and seems a history you can be proud of.

It's amazing how much you can find out! Thank you SO MUCH for helping my grandmother and me.
She hadn't heard about this first wife, and was so happy to see all the certificates etc from her dad's life.
Some of this I managed to find out myself, but not half as much as you guys!
I've decided to not tell my grandmother she had a half-sister, I don't want her to be sad she missed out on getting to know her… But for the rest of the family and I this is of course very interesting!

I'm very curious about Lillie and Knut's relationship- since she grew up with her grandparents. But that might have been normal for that period? It does say "Father" on his grave, and I don't think they meant Margot.
Also, is there some way of finding the person who posted info about his fathers letter correspondence with Knut do you think?

To answer your questions:

We think my great grandmother Ane Kristine Eikrem met Knut when he was visiting his family in Aukra/Molde,Norway, and that they decided to get married in the US. Until now, all we've known about these years, is that they got married, my grandmother Margot was born, Ane Kristine didn't like the weather and took her baby daughter with her back to Norway. Knut might have come with them. He did buy Ane and Margot a farm in Molde. Ane sold the farm, and made dresses to build her own house (one of the few still standing after ww2) in what is now the city center of Molde. Margot married Eystein Bjørshol.

Again- thank you!

Thanks! Okay - here's Ane Kirstine Kristoffersdatter Eikrem on the same ship as Knud in 1922:

First Name: Ane K.
Last Name: Eikrem
Age at Arrival: 34y
Gender Code: F
Marital Status: S
U. S. Citizen? No
Ship Crew? No
Nationality: Norway, Scandinavian
Place of Residence: Molde, Norway
Standardized Place of Residence:
Ship Name: Bergensfjord
Standardized Ship Name: Bergensfjord
Ship Arrival Date: 2 Oct 1922
Ship Arrival Port: New York
Departure Port: Bergen, Norway
Standardized Departure Port: Bergen, Hordaland, Norway
ID Number: 603526080163

She is single. Probably they are planning to get married before they leave Norway - or otherwise had a whirlwind shipboard romance. Maybe Ane Kirstine wanted to visit this new environment of America before making a lifelong commitment to it via marriage.

They have a child Margot in 1924. We need Margot and mother in the 1930 and 1940 census.

Ane Kirstine returned to Norway (as she died there) and yet daughter Margot remains in USA? That could happen, I guess, especially if Margot has grown up by that time. The parish records in Norway could be checked for AK's date of return.

I wonder if the poster's family stories include Lillie Dahl b 1916, who is likely the child of Knud Tautero and Nellie Dahl who died 1916. I really don't know if we're covering terrain she's already researched and knows - or if anything here is new. In any event it all helps to build a portait of the family.

I couldn't use one of the links posted. I agree with Barbara that additional info from you would be great.

It sounds as though you have a tree online perhaps at Ancestry.com and Barbara has viewed it. I'll add a few records for the benefit of the forum although you yourself may likely have them.

Knut Tautero first came to Nelson County, North Dakota, 1905. He was in Dawson County, North Dakota, in 1914 (see below). He seems to have returned to Norway and back again to USA in 1922.

In 1940 Knute Tautero, age 53, born about 1887 in Norway, lives alone and owns his own farm in rural Richland County, North Dakota. He is widowed.

Naturalization Record for Knut Olausen Tautero:
born Tautero, Akero, Norway 14 May 1886
emigrated from Trondheim 2 May 1905
arrived St Ste Marie 23 May 1905 on Lake Erie.
Declaration of Intent filed in Nelson Cty, North Dakota 25 Nov 1905.
Petition Naturalization #551 filed Dawson Cty 19 Jan 1914.
Cert Naturalization 521280 issued 6 Nov 1914.

Ellis Island Record
First Name: Knut
Last Name: Tautero
Ethnicity: US Citizen
Last Place of Residence: Dore, N. D.
Date of Arrival: Oct 02, 1922
Age at Arrival: 35y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Bergensfjord
Port of Departure: Bergen
Manifest Line Number: 0011

http://www.ellisisland.org/search/FormatPassRec.asp?MID=0549...

This forum can help find out more about the family in Norway -- be sure to provide all information that you have to them. Also, maybe you can connect with the creator of that family tree via this forum (as there seems to be no contact information with the tree):
http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/

A Johanna Tautero dies in 1913 in Montana, and the online tree you posted says "your" Knut's mother Johanne died 1913 in USA. Also Nellie Tautero, age 19, died in Montana in 1916. "Your" Knut's father immigrated to USA 1913, per the online tree. You can find his immigration on Ancestry - look for Olaus Kolbeinson (misspelled Kalerson I think) Tautero (it seems he did not use the name Andreas).

This Census from Norway
Folketellingen (Census) 1900 g.40.brk.3
Olaus Kolbensen 1852 gbr. fisker (fisherman)
Johanne Knuddt 1857 gmk [= Johanne Knudsdatter Tautra)
Knudt 1886 son (= "your" Knut Tautero)
Elen Rasmusdt 1883 tj. f. Sand (tj probably = servant, f. Sand means maiden name)
Ole Knudessen 1889 tj.

The online tree says Knut Matias Olausson Tautra came to USA in 1905 together with Iver Knutsen from Jogarden. The tree creator writes that Knut "corresponded with my father, but after his death, we have no information."

As you know the Norwegian had a patronymic naming system (a "surname" would be the father's first name plus son or datter). After this patronymic name comes a place name, as with Tautra. The place name for the person changes when the person moves to a new place. Thus you'll see people with the same place name - but they aren't necessarily related. Excuse me if this is all just repeating the obvious.

I used www.gramtrans.com to help translate the Norwegian text.

Okay - enough I am not family, just trying to help the forum progress on this.

The record I found was his passport application from 1922. The sidebar said it was saved to the original poster's private tree.

I have found Knut in a number of records on Ancestry. WW 1 draft , census etc. The confusing part comes in with the ND location on the border of Montana. The nearest town is in Montana. The last name is misspelled in a variety of ways.

On familysearch.org I found the marriage record for the marriage of Knut and Ane in 1922. I wonder if he brought her back from Norway after his visit in 1922. The marriage doesn't seem to have lasted. Did she go back to Norway with their daughter?

Knut was married in 1915 but his wife died in 1916. Her maiden name was Dahl but I can't remember the first name right now and it's hard to go back and forth on my ipad.

Barbara

Hello,

I haven't even started looking for Knut Tautero yet but I did look at his passport application from 1922 and can see that you have saved the record. Did you see that if you go to the next page of the passport application records you will find the rest of his application including a picture!

Do you have any information about where the family (if together) lived at later times? Where did your grandmother grow up? Did Knut die while your grandmother was young? All these bits of information help in searching.

Barbara

Barbara

I'm looking to find out about my great grandfathers family.

Because my great grandmother did not talk about him, I only have his name and my grandmothers place of birth to go by... I am hoping to find out about him for my grandmother who does not even have a photo.

My grandmother is born in Richland County, North Dakota or Montana in 1924.
Her dad was Knut Matias Olausson Tautra, but the family might have changed its name to Tautero (according to Ellis island records).

I found this; awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=*v33t1327&id=I0865 -
but do not know who wrote it.
See discussion of this topic here, and I suggest volunteers add additional findings to that forum (Ancestry Message Board Douglas County, Wisconsin). Title of post "Can you help me?" LINK:

http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=1652&am...

Per the information developed, Myrtle (or Myrl) Louise Young should get married AFTER 1905 and BEFORE 1910 in (possibly) Beltrami County, Minnesota. The poster is still looking for the exact date.

If the religion of the family can be determined (any ideas Delayne?) there might be a church record. Also a newspaper announcement of the wedding in/near Jones, Beltrami, Minnesota might have appeared.

Anybody out there in Beltrami County willing to do a look up? I don't find them on MOMS (Minnesota Official Marriage System) www.mncounty.com

I did not search for additional threads where this topic might be posted.

BTW "Help Me!" and "Can You Help Me?" aren't the best bets as titles for a query.

Everybody posting a query on a genealogy board is seeking help. What if they all posted a similar title? Picture a message board with these titles:
Help Me!
Can You Help Me?
Need Help
Seeking Help!
Assistance Required
Rescue Requested!!!!
Pleading for Help!
Please Read and Help
Will You Help?
Help with a Search
Please Lend a Hand
Can You Find the Answer?
Need Help with Info
Got Time To Help?
I'd Love Your Help
Your Assistance Appreciated
Request Help and Answers
etc.

Such titles do little to inform others of the topics of those posts! Meanwhile, what if your title was "Look-Up Request Marriage in Beltrami County, Minnesota 1906-1909" That title might attract an appropriate volunteer.

Hope you don't mind my suggesting you change your approach to titles, and my posting the suggestion online, as it does apply to other people as well.

All good wishes and best of luck! We are rooting for you.

Hello,

Yes, I was thinking about buying copies of Hans Pedersen Svingen's naturalization record. The North Dakota Naturalization Records Index has two hits for Norwegian-born Hans P. Svingen: his declaration of intention on November 22, 1884 in Rolette County and naturalization on September 24, 1890 also in Rolette County.

As for the 1885 census, there is a "Hans Livingen," age 27, living in Rolette County. I'm not 100% sure if he is the Hans who I'm looking for, although the ages match up. His brother is listed as "Peder Swinger."

What date and location was the naturalization record?

My grandfather's naturalization in 1880s Minnesota only included the date and location, his name and the leader of the country from which he was changing citizenship from. That was all.

I haven't seen original 1885 Dakota Territory forms, only transcribed records online.

You made another ND posting on the SVINGEN brothers: are these men you are trying to trace in the 1880s?

If you post more information, I'd be happy to see whether I can find anything using other subscription sites.

Beth
not related
