NEWARK: A funeral service for Bertha Louise Cooper, 96, of Newark, Ohio will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens, Newark, OH.
Mrs. Cooper passed away October 14, 2012, at Arlington Care Center, Newark, Ohio
She was born January 23, 1916, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, to the late Clarence and Alice (McDonald) Dew.
She was a 1934 graduate of Martins Ferry High School, and a 1964 graduate of Ohio University in Athens Ohio where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree. She met Charles Van Tilburg at Ohio University in 1935 and then married him during WWII on December 24, 1941.
She taught at Elm School in Martins Ferry, Ohio where she had attended elementary school. She also taught at Woodside and Cherry Valley in Newark, OH. She retired from Cherry Valley in 1973 after 36 ½ years of teaching.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church for over 60 years, member of United Methodist Women (Elizabeth Circle), Research Club, Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma and Land of Legend Travel Club.
She is survived by many friends, especially Cherie Pinnick, Robert Pinnick, Allison Friedman and a special friend Scott Smith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Robert W. Cooper whom she married in 1948; first husband, Lt. Charles Van Tilburg who was killed in action in WWII in 1945; brother, Harold Douglas Dew, and nephew, James H. Dew.
Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St. Newark.
