McKisson - Broomhall - Wright and associated surnames. A lot of people! We were just there 2 weeks ago - it seems everytime we go (we live in Maryland) we find more people. Several years ago we met the caretaker (I think his name was Richard) and he said that the records were private. I am wondering if there is any change in that status.
Thank you very much,
Carol & Gary Petranek

I lived near a Ferd McMurray (or was it McMurry) in Shadyside Ohio in the 1950's. He was a barber and was probably born in
the 1890's. His mother was a Brice and I am not sure of his father's name. He was raised by his grandparents. He had a son Earl and a daughter-don't remember her name, but it seems she lived near Athens Ohio.I don't know if these people connect to yours or not.

I do find that interesting. My own Michael Carnes I have not found who his parents were. The write-ups on him all say that he came from Virginia but I have not found anything to link him there.Near as I can tell, he was born sometime around 1780-1790. He arrived in Logan Co. about 1816. His wife was from Rose Co. which I have found nothing on her family either. So it is possible that there is a connection. I will have to go back and look at more records. Bellefontaine is about an hour from me. Columbiana area is a bit farther. But I can also look in my local library and see if I can find anything there. It will be monday before I can go though. I definately will do some other research. I printed out your info and I will check to see if there is anything else I can find on them as well. Very interesting indeed. I will post anything that I find. Dawn Carnes

Thanks Linda
I presently don't have any connections to the Carnes family of Columbiana that I know of. I have researched the Carnes family of Ireland though and find it very interesting. I do find it interesting though that your ancestor came to this area. My own family of Carnes are from the surrounding area of Logan Co. and I do have family that came from Columbiana, surname of Wickersham and Jacobs that married into my Carnes family. Thank you so much for posting this as well. I presently have several copies of The Report that covers several years and thought that I would start posting some of the content in them so that others may be able to use that info for their own families. Appreciate your thoughtfulness. I will post a note on the Carns/Carnes boards for others who may be connected.

Dawn:

I found it most interesting that Elizabeth CARNES, her husband, Robert JOHNSTON, their children and granchildren, came directly to Columbiana Co., OH, from Ireland. All three of the JOHNSTON immigrant families came up the St. Lawrence River. I guess that was much easier than trying to land on the east coast and traversing the mountains of PA. Obviously, there must have been others, who'd come before, and had told them the easiest way to travel to their destination. Perhaps, a search of the real estate records would reveal a possible connection. Since I live in Michigan, it will be next year before I'm able to make a "genealogy jaunt" to Ohio to look at them. I've been to Belmont County, several times, since I was originally told that the JOHNSTONs came from there (an error).

At this point, I'm not aware of any ancestors before those, who "came across the pond". I do have a friend, in Ireland, who is trying to assist me. She lives near PRONI, their records office (like our National Archives).

Linda
Dawn:

Thanks! I'd sure appreciate it if you can find anything. I was thinking that, since Elizabeth CARNES married Robert JOHNSTON, all their descendants would carry the JOHNSTON surname. However, if Elizabeth was a member of the CARNES family, who'd previously come to America, there could be relatives, most anywhere. These people sure seemed to get around a lot, considering the times and modes of transportation available to them. LOL!

Linda
Dawn:

Thanks for posting the Bible Records of Sarah JOHNSTON.

In reviewing some of your old postings, I find that we have some surnames and locations in common.
William Clark (1814-1900) Query

Hello: I am trying to find more information on the ancestors of William Clark (1814-1900). I just posted his obituary to this board. The obituary states he was a member of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church (I believe this is in Bridgeport). If anyone has access to the records of that church (I believe some of the records may be at the Wheeling Room of the Ohio County Public Library in Wheeling) I was hoping to get a bit more information.

1. He moved from Wheeling to Bridgeport about 1866. Would the church records indicate what church he was a member of prior to that?
2. William's wife, Ruth Bentley Clark, died in 1888. Would the records indicate an exact date for her?
3. William Clark died on January 4, 1900. Would there be a record of his death in the church records? If so, I would be interested in knowing if the record shows the name of his parents.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

What follows is a transcript of the obituary of William Clark of Wheeling, WV and Bridgeport, OH.

Wheeling Daily Intelligencer Newspaper, Friday, January 5, 1900

“CAPT. WILLIAM CLARK DEAD,

He Was a Native of Wheeling, and Was Known as an Old-Time Pilot on Western Waters.

Captain William Clarke, a veteran river man and one of the oldest residents of this vicinity, died at an early hour yesterday morning, at the residence of his son, Squire J.E. Clarke, in Bridgeport. He was in his eighty-sixth year and until a recent date had enjoyed good health unusual for one of his age. His rugged frame was stricken with paralysis about a week ago, since which time he grew gradually weaker until the close came of a long and honorable life.

The deceased was a native of Wheeling, and was born on North Main street, in 1814. When sixteen years of age he began running on the river, and for about fifty-five years as a pilot and captain, and previously in minor capacities, he travelled on the Ohio, between Pittsburgh and Louisville principally. Eighteen years ago he forsook the river for a life of retirement. He moved from Wheeling to Bridgeport about thirty-four years ago, and since the death of his wife, he made his home with his sons. Surviving him are seven children, six sons and one daughter, as follows: J.E. and W.H. Clarke, of Bridgeport; Harry, of Chicago; D.B., of Wheeling; Bently, of Freedom, Pa.; James, of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Chris Young, of Portsmouth, Ohio.

Only one son is engaged in the river business, Captain Bently Clarke, of the Dick Fulton. The funeral will occur Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock, from the residence of J.E. Clarke, in Kirkwood. The deceased was a member of the Kirkwood Presbyterian church. The interment will be at Mount Wood cemetery, this city.

Captain Clarke was a member of the Septuagenarian Club, of Wheeling, Bridgeport and Martin’s Ferry, many of the members of which have died during the past two years.”

NOTES REGARDING THIS OBITUARY:

1. I have typed this exactly as written – including the inconsistency in the surname (spelled CLARK in the heading and CLARKE throughout).
2. William Clark (1814-1900) and his wife Ruth Clark (1818-1888) were buried at Lot A 35 in Mount Wood Cemetery.

Seeking the correct birth date for the following:
IDA WHITE: born June 16, 1914 or 1916 in Belmont county, Ohio
Her parents: William H. White and Alice A. Durbin. I found her death record and it states she was born in 1914 but it also states she was 3 yrs old when she died, death date being February 1, 1919. The difference is more. It may be a clerical error but I would like to know the actual birth year. Thank you for your time....Lorie

I attached the photo.

The back of the postcard reads
"FRETER BORS. Famous Post Cards Made at Bridgeport, O."
..and in handwriting
"Eva Sweeney"

I know the chance is extremely slim, but any possibility you can shed some light on the picture for me? People, school name, city, etc...?

Thanks!

Joshua

Hello!

I just found one of these class photo post cards that has my great-grandmother from Salineville, OH. The photo was taken ~1910.

I'm researching it to find out which one is my great-grandmother, and possibly identify the other people for other researchers.

Are you still interested in the postcards?
