NEWARK: Mr. Richard F. Saunders 83, a current resident of Flint Ridge Village and formerly of West Main St., Newark, Ohio died on January 18, 2013, at the Selma Markowitz Hospice Care Center.

He was born October 30, 1929, in Licking County, Ohio to the late Lee A. and Esther (Merle) Saunders.

Richard graduated from Granville High School in 1947, and served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany during the Korean War.
He was employed by the Signal Department of the B & O Railroad for seven years.
He was a member if the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters Union of the United States and Canada for 55 year, in Local 271 of Newark, Ohio until it merged with Local 189 of Columbus, Ohio and retired after 32 years in 1990.
Richard's interests included tending his vegetable garden, working around the house, and a love of bluegrass music.

Mr. Saunders is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carol (Terry) Worst of Newark, OH; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven (Ronda) Saunders of Granville, Ohio; two grandchildren, Jacob and Erika Saunders of Granville; two step-grandchildren, Jennifer (Scott) Shannon of New Mexico, and Jonathon Worst of Hawaii; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Gavin Shannon, of New Mexico; one brother, Wilbur Saunders of Newark; one sister and brother-in- law, Doris (Robert) Toland of Heath; one sister-in-law, Lila Saunders of Heath, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Jeanne Carol (Ruff) Saunders and four brothers: Ray, Howard, Herbert, and Martin.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St. Newark, Ohio.

Chapel services for Richard F. Saunders, are at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, where military honors will be conducted by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. Pastor James Gau will be officiating. Following a luncheon, burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.



In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Granville Music Boosters, or to the AMVETS Post 345 (Newark), Christmas Gift Fund for Nursing Home Veterans.
