Gust E. Wenning
Birth: 24 Feb 1910, Linton, Emmons County, North Dakota
Death: 4 Jan 1997, Spokane Washington
Gust was born on Feb 24, 1910 at Linton, a son of John and Katharina (Fauth) Wenning. In 1936, Mr. Wenning moved from this area to Washington State for employment with the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1974 he retired after 38 years of service, the last 12 as section foreman in Spokane. One of his final jobs involved changes to the UP’s “Old Yard†adjacent to Expo ’74 to accommodate the steam locomotive 8444.
In 1937 he returned to North Dakota to marry Bertha Weber at Jamestown. The couple lived in Walla Walla, Farmington, and Spokane, WA. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct 16, 1987. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, bowling, working for his church, friends and family. In 1977, as a result of illness, he was confined to a wheelchair. He spent the last years of his life at Manor Care Convalescent Home in Spokane. He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Spokane.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and John Thompson of Seattle, and Marily and Richard Smiley of Pendelton, Ore; two sons, Ray Wenning of Spokane and Byron Wenning of Bellevue, Wash; seven grandchildren, Dawn and her husband, Scott Olinger and Cindy Thompson, all of Seattle, Elizabeth Smiley of Arlington, VA, Abe Moriah and Rachel Wenning of Spokande and Bryon Wenning, Jr. of Bellevue; two great-grandsons, Bradley and Steven Olinger of Seattle; eight sisters, Carrie Hill of Portland, Ore., Emma Wickert of Seattle, Wash, Lydia Goldaer of Troy, Ohio, Frieda Wheeler and Ruth McAllister, both of Walla Walla, Wash., Ester Jacobs of Bellingham, Rebecca Mobley of Modesto, CA, and Ida Matteson of Bose, ID, and two brothers Henry Wenning, and Albert Wenning, both of Walla Walla.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Krieg and Kathryn McBath, and one brother, John
Funeral services were held at Hazen and Jaegar Funeral Chapel in Spokane, WA on Wednesday, Jan 8, 1997, with Pastor John Amon officiating.
Casketbearers were Ray Wenning, Byron Wenning, Abe Wenning, John Thompson, Richard Smiley, and Scott Olinger.
Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery at Spokane.
