Elijah CRITES died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George MINX, in Highland Township, Tuesday December 3, at the age of sixty-six years, three months and eight days.
About 35 years ago, while the deceased was chopping wood, a stick of wood struck him near the right eye, fracturing the upper part of the check bone, and his death from cancer was the result. The deceased was born September 25, 1841, near Canal Dover, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. When about 20 years of age he moved with his parents to Christian County, Illinois. In the year of 61 he enlisted in the cause of Freedom, serving about a year in CO C 148TH REGIMENT ILL INF.
On November 11, 1867, he was married to Miss Rachel L. MINX; unto this union were born six children, three boys and three girls, three of whom died in infancy, one son at the age of fifteen. Two daughters are left to mourn his loss: Mrs. George V. MINX, of Highland Township, Mrs. Roy F. SPAINHOWER, of Terre Haute.
He was preceded to the better land by his wife on May 17, 1899. He was a member of G. A. R. Post No. 91 at Worthington.
He was a member of the Methodist church.
He was a kind and loving father, an honorable and upright citizen and a good neighbor.
He leaves a host of relative and friends to mourn his death. Interment in the Bland Cemetery, Thursday, Dec. 5 at 11 oclock.
