Hello. Based on several oral accounts that I heard as a child (1980's-90's), there is a possible link to Tecumseh. I'm part Cherokee on my dad's side. Basically as I understand it, my great-great grandfather was a Cherokee chief in North Carolina whose daughter (Mary or Mary Ellen as English name) married an Englishman by the name of Bruce Pfortner(Fortner) and settled in Grainger County, TN. So it is plausible. Perhaps a relative of his married a Cherokee at some point around the early to mid 19th century and perhaps the son or grandson went on to become the chief. But no surefire way of verifying. On my mom's side, it is Scots-Irish and German around St. Petersburg, Florida.
