Atchley in Elk City, OK

I'm trying desperately to link my Atchley line. My grandmother was Olga May Atchley, her father was Fenimore E. Atchley, his father was Daniel E. Atchley. Daniel E. was born in Texas, lived in Washita, Custer, OK...then in Elk City, Beckham, OK. His wife was Arabella E. They are both buried at Fairlawn Cemetery in Elk City. His father may have been the elusive Robert Seth Atchley, but I can't be certain. If anyone has any info that can help, I'd be mighty grateful.

To the family that has been so kind to message me about the Old Doxey cemetery in the past. You sent me an obit about Mrs. Waits from the Arkansas newspaper. I have since gotten other obits for Mrs. Sallie Waits of Wash, wife of Charlie, but these do not tell of a drowning. These are 1903 Sayre newspapers. I show the death date of the Mrs. Waits in the Old Doxey cemetery to be 1903. The Arkansas newspaper is dated 1910. I would like to talk with you about this and try to figure out which obits are right. Please contact me by e-mail or by phone - 580-928-2641.

Thanks!

Stacy

He married my great grandmother Meada Embry 11 May 1911 in Louisville, Kentucky and died young of Pneumonia when my grandmother Mabel Maxine Bean was only 3 or 4. They're all deceased now, so I'm left to fumble through these pages to find info, but it's not easy since this is the ONLY info I have on him. Any help is appreciated! Thanks

My G-Grandfather was Earl Arms.

His WWI reg card state he was born in Elk City, OK, in Aug 1894, but all my current research says Elk City (currently in Beckham CO.) did not exist until 1901. His Occ. listed as a Junk Peddler in Stockton, CA.

He is found in the 1920 US Census with my G-Grandmother, my Paternal Grandmother and her older Brother, in Pocatello, Idaho. He states Texas as his Birth State there. Occ. was General Laborer.

I have not found him in the 1910 or 1900 Census' yet. He appears to have moved a lot (Los Angeles, CA in ealy 1917, to Stockton, CA in mid 1917, to Oakland, CA in 1918, to Pocatello, ID in 1920, back to LA, CA in 1924), and was possibly prone to exaggeration (his WWI draft card says he had 7 children).

He is absent from the picture between the birth of his 3rd child, and my G-Grandmas 4th child by a 2nd Husband (bet. 1924-1927).

Now the questions:
1) was Elk City at any time part of the Greer Co. that was claimed by Texas??
2) Any one researching "Arms" in these areas??
3) Any suggestions on getting out of this dead end??

I only have 2 docs to prove he even exists. the 1920 Census and the WWI Draft Card.

Any Help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Lost

Napa Valley Register Wednesday, July 18, 2007

Ruby Duncan
NAPA - Ruby T. Duncan passed away July 11, 2007, at her home in Napa at the age of 100.

On her 100th birthday this past January, there was a party celebrating her many years, attended by all her family, many coming from other parts of the country. It turned out to be a family reunion.

She is survived by her daughter, Lou Whitaker, and son-in-law Brown Whitaker of Napa; four grandchildren, Susan Whitaker of San Francisco, Steven Whitaker of Phoenix, Ariz., Linda Adams of Riverside and Terri Snyder of Coarse Gold; eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Duncan; and her daughter, Jeanette Gordon.

Ruby was born in Elk City Okla., Jan. 19, 1907, and moved to Long Beach in 1944. She lived in Apple Valley, where she was involved in real estate, and Riverside until 1991 when she moved to the Redwood Retirement Residence in Napa to be near her daughter, Lou.

She was a great craftswoman, and her talents have given many happy hours to hundreds of people, teaching the fun of making crafts that they never dreamed they could make. She taught crafts along with her sister on Royal Viking Lines and Delta Lines for several years during the 70s.

She was a fun loving, outgoing and unique woman, enjoying parties, costumes, jokes, getting dressed up, and she always looked her best.

She was a woman of great pride and irrepressible determination, living her life that way to the end. We shall all miss her vibrant personality and great sense of humor. She was larger than life and truly a “precious jewel.”

Ruby will be interred next to her daughter, Jeanette, in Riverside at a later date.

*I'm not related. Just thought it was a interesting obit since she was born pre-statehood in Beckham County.
Bob Buster Obituary Elk City Morning Times 1934

Bob Buster and Annie Britt married 1 nov 1928 in Sayre, Beckham County, Oklahoma. In additon to the daughter, they also had a son named Bobby Jo Buster. He was born 17 February 1935 in oklahoma. He died in Santa Clara County, Ca on 7 June 1993. Bob died 3 months before Bobby was born in an accident 18 Sept 1934. The obituary states that Bob Buster, aged 25 years, was instantly killed Tuesday morning when an International truck loaded with 3500 pounds of broom corn passed over the right side of his body as he fell beneath the wheels of the moving truck. The accident occured about five miles north and west of Sayre on Highway 41 about 10 o'clock yesterday morning. L. Hagerman who lives near Sweetwater was driving the truck and Will Moore and a man named Barnes were riding in the cab with him. Buster signaled to the driver for a ride but Hagerman did not slow down as he was approaching a hill and as he passed Buster made a grab for the side of the truck and started to climb aboard. He lost his footing and fell beneath the truck. The wheels of the loaded vechicle struck him in the groin on the right side and passed over his body crushing it and breaking his neck as the wheel passed over his shoulder near the head. He was dead when the men on the truck reached him. Officers at Sayre were notified and Lawson Gillum, under sheriff and Sam Flynn, Chief of Police of Elk City, who was attending court at Sayre went to the scene of the accident. A coroner's jury was empaneled at the scene of the accident and returned a verdict that Buster came to his death thru unavoidable accident and absolved the driver of all blame. The body was taken to the Sayre undertaking establishment. Buster lived in Sayre until last spring when he moved to the Poarch Tourist Camp. He had lived in the state 27 years and in the county for a year and a half. Buster is survived by his wife Anna Britt Buster and a five year old daughter Geneva. They had been living 2 miles west of Murphy's gin. He was empolyed on the Pera project near Sweetwater, Okla homa. He is survived by his mother and three relatives who live on a farm near Sawyer. From the Elk City Morning Times , Wednesday, Sept 19 , 1934
Looking for any information on Elbert M. Although he is not biologically related to me I would like to find out more about him as he was very special to me as a young boy. I do know that he was previously married and had children before he married my gr grandmother Melinda Pyle. If I am correct I believe that he had at least one child a girl name Gladys. Some young lads were playfully walking along the hiway and one fell onto a car and was killed. We think the young man's first name was "Hondus" and are trying to come up with the last name. Does anyone on the board recall such an accident?

Thanks

Wilson Homestead Beckham Co OK/Greer Co TX whereabouts Delhi area

Need to know if anyone knows if there is a place I can find out about an old homestead. I have been trying for several years to find a family grave in the Delhi area with no luck. Recently found an article that says, James T & Malona Wilson had property in the area, along with or close to land belonging to William & Mary Wilson. Wm's son Elijah traded some of his father's land to his Uncle James and vica versa. The whereabouts of this property might help to locate this grave and protect it. Please if anyone can help me with this contact me at fhawk57@hotmail.com. Elijah's wife and daughter are buried on the property with a single pillar marker bearing both their names. I have aphoto of the marked take long ago, but can't find the grave in person.
Barbara Germer

I have since been told that his name was not E.M. but no one is alive that remembers what his name was. The only Green listed in the Erick Cemetery that died abt 1956 is W.C. Green. I would like to find out more about this man that I knew as my gr grandfather. Also he was at one time a City Marshall I believe in Erick.
I would appreciate any help that anyone could provide.
Thanks
Robert

South of Elk City area - Spears, Brittle or Garner families

I'm looking for information on my Grandmother, Lorene Elizabeth Spears.

She was born in 1901 in Tennessee. Her parents died sometime around 1906/7 and she was sent to live with family in the Sweetwater area. This family had too many to care for themselves, so she was sent to live with we think was a family by the name of Brittles, could be Riddles or similar name. A friend of that family by the name of Bill Garner helped my Grandmother get her teaching certificate. He was supposed to have worked for the Railroad in Elk City and around the area.

The farm where she was raised by the Brittle / Riddle family is south of Elk City on Highway 6 and highway 152 junction.

Any information on any of these families would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you, Julie

I'm seeking any information on the family of a William O. Gray b. ca. 1860 in IL. His wife was Emma [mnu] who died in 1925, and she is buried in the Sayre-Doxey Cemetery.

In 1910, they were living in Texas Co., OK; 1920 in Beckham Co. I cannot find them on previous censuses.

Daughter Bertha E. Gray married Homer G. Barrett in 1917 in Beckham Co.
Daughter Christina Gray married Francis H. Smotherman in 1917 in Beckham Co.
Daughter Lillie Pearl Gray married T.D. Melvin in 1927 in Beckham Co.
I believe William and Emma also had a son named Dewey.

The last record I have of William is his marriage to my late grandmother in Sayre in 1927. I'd like to learn what happened to him and would like to learn more about his family. All I know is what I've written above.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Catherine

I am hoping to find someone to help secure a copy of my grandparent's obituaries. A. A. Evans (Andrew Allen Evans) died in late 1961 and is buried in Elk City, Beckham County. They farmed 9 miles south of Canute. Ethel Evans (b Nov. 2, 1891), after being widowed, moved to Dill City, OK and died in a Cordell nursing home in Sep. 1983. Ethel is buried alongside her husband in Elk City. A. A. Evan's parents homesteaded southeast of Elk City and southwest of Canute about 15 miles (Searching for their names). Ethel McCune(sp?) Evans was orphaned at a young age. I remember her saying her father became sick while working on building structures at, I think, the military base near Lawton, and died on a creek or river bank during the attack. She related seeing her mother on her death bed, so I presume she was at least 5 or 6 at the time (death around 1898-1900?). Too bad I wasn't more interested in geneology when I had the opportunity to answer all these questions. That's all I know about McCune's. Hopefully I can get the obits. and go from there. Thanks for any help.
