I am posting this in the event that descendants of Cecil someday go looking for genealogical information regarding their Robinson lineage. If I am still alive when they do, I would welcome contact and an exchange of information.

Cecil Roy Robinson, born 1 Aug 1895 in Oklahoma, died Feb 1976 in or near Mangum, Greer Co. Married Gertie Adellia Red(d)ing in Greer Co. on 17 Nov 1917.

Cecil was the son of Charles Lovelace Robinson and Alice M. Mayberry and the brother of Eddie Lee, who married Frank Jefferson Barnett. Charles and Alice married in or near Prescott, Nevada Co., Arkansas. Charles was born 1 Nov 1868, in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, to James Luke Robinson and Laura Ann Dickerson, and died 7 Dec 1911. He is buried in Rock Cemetery, near Duke, Jefferson Co. OK. Alice was born in 1870, died in 1958, and is buried near Charles.

James Luke Robinson was born in Georgia on 14 Dec 1835 and died near Lebanon, Marshall Co. OK on 10 May 1898. His parents are unknown at this time. Laura Ann Dickerson was born on 1 Feb 1849 in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, to Jehu Dickerson and Frances Ann Hope. James and Laura married in Ouachita Parish on 19 Dec 1870, and had three children: Charles Lovelace, Ola May, and Dona Ann. Dona never married, but Ola May married Francis "Frank" Frederick Sampson. Ola and Frank Sampson were my great-grandparents.

Perryman Shumate Ponder 1839-1896 is buried in Reed,Greer Co also, but he died before the Reed cemetery was formed (1899) and was buried by the creek on his home place. He was struck by lightning while plowing in the field. They hung his hat on the fence when they picked him up and it stayed there until it rotted. His wife is buried beside him and one grandson, Olen, buried beside him. Olen was the son of William Perry Ponder and Mary Cornelia Smith. (they owned Ponder Chevrolet in Mangum)

Wiley Campbell and Martha Lou Ch(a or e)ney Shadden were the parents of Rae Shadden Sooy. I've seen Ancestry.com data for them and some follow-on family date for two of their children as well. Unfortunately, there is no certain data for Rae's husband, Floyd Herschel Sooy, after the 1930 census. But, Rae Shadden Sooy does appear on the SSDI, dying sometime in April of 1981, presumably in/around Mangum.

I also have found SSDI to list a man who might have been their son and named Floyd A. Sooy (rather than Floyd H. Sooy as I have him listed), born 6/6/1916 and dying 5/24/2002 in/around Independence, MO. I do know that Rae's son, Floyd (A. or H., Jr.) Sooy, was born in 1916. I know nothing further, sorry to say. In the unlikely even that you live in/near Mangum perhaps you might care to find some record of their obituaries and/or cemetery records there. Thanks for responding!

Yes, I do know exactly where Oscar and Pearl are buried. Oscar was buried in Ryan, Oklahoma (Jefferson County) near his father. Oscar's mother, Hanah, would later be buried near the two. Pearl was buried in Mangum. (Interesting side note: Pearl's burial expenses were paid in 1967 by son Lee, (birth name Oscar Lee Jr.). I also have a greatly detailed account of the accident which resulted in Oscar's drowning. There is an amazing newspaper account, but in addition to that there was a law suit filed against the railroad on behalf of Pearl and the children. It went on for years, and wasn't settled until the early 1930's, after Pearl died and the kids were adopted. In addition to the other records, I have copies of the funeral home records for both Oscar and Pearl. According to the adoption information I have, all 3 girls (birth names Ellen Inez, Dorothy Laverne, and Norma Joyce) were adopted by families residing in Mangum at the time.) Their brother Billie Gene was adopted by a family in Goodwell Oklahoma and the other two brothers, Oscar Lee Jr. and James Rufus, were adopted by a family in Tulsa Oklahoma. My records show that with the exception of Norma, the first and middle names of all the other siblings were changed at adoption either partially or completely. I have a great deal of information to share, including some "up the tree" with Oscar's family and his mother's family, "Curtis", from Texas. Could we correspond directly through our email addresses?

I am seeking any information regarding the ancestors and descendants of Oscar Lee Brooks and Pearl (Faubian?) Brooks. Oscar and Pearl married in Greer County in 1916, and had 3 sons and 3 daughters. In the 1920 census, the family is listed as living in Hobart, Kiowa county. In 1926, Oscar was killed in a railroad bridge collapse, leaving Pearl a widow with the 6 children. Three years later, Pearl died, leaving the 6 children orphaned. The children were adopted by 5 different families around the state of Oklahoma and all their names were changed. The 3 girls were adopted by 3 different families in Mangum; 2 of the boys were adopted by a family in Tulsa, and 1 boy was adopted by a family in the panhandle. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I have much info to share with you, and would love to have contact with you. I have tried for years to learn what happened to this family and these children. I have many records, including newspaper articles, death certificates, adoption records, marriage license and info on Oscar's Choctaw heritage. I have some info on Oscars family, 10 siblings I think, and on his mother. I have little onPearl. I have no info after the adoption on any of the girls, other than their adopted names and adoptive parents. I have some info on the 3 boys, and met 2 of them when I was very, very young. I would be thrilled to be in contact with any of the Brooks descendants. I would so appreciate a copy of the picture you mentioned.

Hi there!

Just saw your post from 2004 regarding Essie Akers and Virgil Carver. I am a descendent of Virgil's brother, Arthur Carver, who was my grandfather. I guess that would make Virgil my great-uncle. Virgil and Essie had no children. He worked for most of his life in law enforcement and lived for many years in New Mexico, but I don't off-hand recall where. I believe he lived there at the time of his death too. If you need any additional information let me know.

Regards,
Howard Carver
Long Beach, California
formerly of
Willow, Greer County, Oklahoma

Thank you for the very interesting information and your generous offer to share it. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of info, but I will by happy to send the two individual pictures shortly as they are packed away. I had heard about a bridge accident and that after Pearl died, a Methodist minister took care of the children until they could all be adopted. My mom grew up in Mangum, then married and lived near Dallas most of her life. Her sister, Dorthea also lived in Dallas and died around l965. They had a sister, Virginia, who lived in Tx., but I have no info on her. Very little info on a brother, Bill, who lived in California. I was wondering if you knew the cemetary where Oscar and Pearl were buried? Off the record, I discovered that the couthouse in Mangum burned down in early l900's and all records were lost. I quit looking for any information after I read that.

I finally found the pictures of Oscar and Pearl. After a bit of trouble scanning on a new printer, I hope they are attached. I don't mind conversing by email. If you will reply to this post with your email address, I will email you back. It is amazing you have newspaper articles and so much detailed information. I have pictures of Dorthea and one old picture of the other sister. Also a picture of Norma at the age of three when she was adopted as well as many others. Did you grow up in Mangum? I was curious as to how you came across all this great information. I spent many wonderful summers and holidays there. I am in the process of trying to scan about 800+ slides on this new printer and a lot of them were taken in Mangum. AS I said, I just recently obtained all the documents, photos and slides. I am so very appreciative of anything you want to share with me and find it very exciting to have accidentally discovered your question on the website. If the pictures are not attached, please let me know and I'll try again.

I have an early picture of Oscar and his wife and I would be most interested in finding out more about them since they were my mother's biological parents. I do not know much except what the Barton family has told me. I also know the grandson of Oscar and in contact with them. I am astounded to look on this site and first thing I see is this inquiry.
