Terral Pioneers
This is the fourth of a series on pioneers of the Terral community, printed in connection with the Golden Jubilee Celebration being held in Terral, Saturday and Sunday, August 29 and 30. (did not find first three of series?)
JOSEPH SYDNEY VANDERBURG (with photo)
JOSEPH SYNDEY VANDERBURG, known as Uncle Joe in southern Jefferson County, has been continuously resided in or near Terral since Oct. 16, 1891. He is the first child of a family of four children, son of Mr. and Mrs. RUFUS KING WALLACE VANDERBURG and MARGARET EAST VANDERBURG. All of his brothers and sisters are deceased. He was born Oct. 12, 1859 at Columbus, Caldwell Parish, Louisiana. In 1869 the family migrated to Texas in Harrison County near Marshall, soon moving to Carthage in Panola County. On Jan. 29, 1884, he was united in marriage with Miss LILA PARKER. To this union were born six children, JODIE VANDERBURG of Terral; Mrs. JESSIE MATTOCK of Houston, Texas; Mrs. OSCAR SCOTT of Los Angeles, Calif.; CHARLES VANDERBURG of Cottonwood, Arizona; SANDY VANDERBURG of Wewoka, Okla., and RUFUS KING WALLACE VANDERBURG of Ryan. In the fall of 1891, Uncle Joe, his wife and three children left Panola County, Texas for Indian Territory. They crossed Red River near old Fleetwood and settled on land controlled by Mrs. EMILY EASTWOOD. The trip was made in an ox wagon, but the oxen were sold soon after they arrived and he made his first crop with horses.
While he cultivating his first crop, the Rock Island RR was projecting its lines across the Chickasaw Nation. It was a common sight to see the men building the grade, laying the track and constructing the bridge across Red River. That same year the town of Terral mushroomed overnight with J. H. D. TERRAL as promoter. He moved to Terral in 1904. During 1906-97, he was busy filing Indians on their allotments. … In 1908, Red River was in flood stage when Dr. ENNIS W. EWING, a young physician in Terral and two other men, one the editor of the Terral paper and the other named GALLAGER, went in a boat to rescue some blooded stock. The boat capsized and the editor and Gallager were marooned in a tree, while Dr. Ewing stayed with the boat which carried him into dangerous waters. The boat capsized and dr. Ewing lost his hold on the boat, unable to swim, snagged a drifting tree mostly under water. If the snag had broken, Dr. Ewing would have drowned. He held on and waited for rescue. By the time Uncle Jo arrived, about 1000 people were at the river. Only one man volunteered to go on a rescue party, Uncle Joe thought the man was too young so Uncle Joe went along. They rescued Dr. Ewing and the other two men were rescued. ….In 1938, Mrs. Vanderburg died and since that time Uncle Joe had lived with his son JODIE.
