Surnames: Moore, Patterson, Cook, Donelson, Thompson, Reid, Lewis, Ward
Leonard E. Moore (born 16 July 1890 in Hunt County, Tx, died 13 March 1987 in Waurika, Oklahoma, buried in Waurika Cemetery) came to Jefferson County, OK at the age of 16 with his father, William T. Moore (born 1849, Claiborne County, Tennessee, died in 1917 in Waurika, OK, buried in Waurika Cemetery), and Sarah Donelson, (born 1852 in Tennesse, died in 1912 at Darwin near Antlers, Pushmataha County, OK and buried in the Darwin Cemetery), the daughter of Thomas (born 1821, TN, died about 1900 in Titus County, TX) and Nancy Donelson.

The ancestors of this family go back to David Moore, (born 1772 in VA and Margaret Sherman, (born 1774 in NC), who raised their family in Claiborne County, Tennessee. David and Margaret Sherman Moore's son, Samuel Martin Moore (born 1792 in Claiborne Co, Tennessee, died after 1880, Hunt County, TX) married in Claiborne Co, Mary Ann "Polly" Lewis (born 1794 in Claiborne Co, Tennessee), daughter of Fielding Lewis,( born 1767 in Virginia) and Mary Gambill, (born 1773, Virginia). Nathan H. Moore, son of Samuel and Polly Lewis Moore was born in 1820 in Missouri, grew up in Claiborne County, TN and on 25 July 1844 married Sarah Ann Thompson, (born 1820, TN), daughter of William Thompson and Catherine Sherman (sister to Margaret Sherman, wife of David Moore). Nathan fought in the Civil War and died ca 1890 in Collin or Hunt County, TX. William T. Moore was the son of Nathan and Sarah Thompson Moore and the father of our Jefferson County Pioneer, Leonard E. Moore.

On the 26th of October, 1910, Leonard married Hattie Lou Patterson (born 25 July 1888 in Tupelo, MS, died 17 October 1957 in Waurika, OK, buried in Waurika Cemetery), daughter of Jefferson Alexander Patterson (born 1 April 1866 in Marion County, AL, died 18 March 1907 in Waurika, Oklahoma, buried in the Addington Cemetery) and Ella Cook, (born 5 Nov 1866 in Itawamba County, MS, died 15 August 1922, in Waurika, Ok, buried in the Addington Cemetery).

Jefferson's parents were John Bowie Patterson, (born in NC, fought in the Civil War and died in 1868 in Marion County, AL) and Cinthina Thompson, (born 8 November, 1823 in AL and died 7 February 1874 in Dorsey, Itawamba County, MS). Ella Cook Patterson's parents were Mark Cook (born 13 December 1845 in Itawamba County, MS, fought in the Civil War and died 27 October 1923 in Itawamba County, MS) and Sarah "Sallie" Ward (born 1838 in AL and died about 1881 in Mississippi).

Leonard and Hattie were married by a Reverend Brown and left immediately by wagon to go to the Antler's area in Pushmataha County, where Leonard's parents were living at the time. Two years later, after the birth of their first child, Dallas Leon Moore and after the death of Leonard's mother, the couple returned to Jefferson County and settled on a farm just east of Waurika on Highway 70, raised their four children and lived there for many years.

"Daddy Leonard" loved to tell tales--some of them true, some not--of his early life in Texas and Oklahoma. His mother, Sarah Donelson was descended from the Donelson family of Rachel (Donelson) Jackson, wife of President Andrew Jackson. "Mama Hattie" was a lover of poetry and wrote many, many poems depicting her life and experiences as an early Oklahoma pioneer.

The descendants of Leonard E. Moore and Hattie Lou Patterson are as follows:

Dallas and Lucille had six children: Phyllis Jean, Shirley Ann, Lois Ruth, Sandra Lou, Patricia Fay and Dallas Ray.
