This is interesting stuff!
I have William as James Sly's older brother and Elizabeth as James Younger sister by one year. David and Tilda or "Matilda" on the marriage record were married Jan 13th 1835 in Clermont County Ohio. David appears on the 1840 Clermont County census but by 1860 "Matilda" is listed as head of household and William has left already leaving James, Elizabeth, Nancy and Andrew as children.
David and Tilda were also married as Slye but she has dropped the "e" off the end of the name by 1860.
I have no idea what became of David Sly between 1840 and 1860 but he is gone by the 1860 census.
James Sly had 5 children. Clara, Franklin (My G Grandfather)
twin boys Clifford and Claude and the youngest daughter Fannie.
William also had a daughter named Clara born one year earler than James daughter Clara.
Clara married a man named Joseph Major from Noble county Oklahoma and died in Bunch Creek Township in 1933.
James lived with his wife in Mulhall and His son Claude lived there with his wife Linnie florece Rogers.
James died in 1907.
This is where your story about Zack Mulhall really interests me.
I read that the shooting of Reed was in a dispute over horses.
There has been a very old rumor that my GG grandfather James was hung for stealing horses in 1907.
My Grandmother did not know his name even though he was her grandfather and was told to never speak or ask about him again.
James' children all left Missouri and Oklahoma by 1910 and all moved to Idaho. They also told everyone that they were "orphaned" at an early age which was not true as they were all in their late 20's to early 30's in 1907 when James died.
It took me 18 years to find his name and I only found that by ordering My Great Grandfather Franklins death certificate from boise where he died in 1932.
There has always been a great mystery in my family surrounding his (James) death.
The family disowned him for some reason and never spoke of him again.
I am looking at the Palestine, Cooper County Missouri 1880 census right now and can see that Eliga and Elizabeth Reed were also James Sly's next door neighbors in Missouri in 1880.
I have more things to look up now thanks to your response.
I hope to add more soon.
Thank you for the information.
I'll get back with you on this.
