Former Springfield Fire Chief, Harry Ross Krieger of Monroe, WA died March 28 of age-related causes. He was 89. He was born October 5, 1908, in St. Johns, WA to Elizabeth and Daniel Gerlach. He and his wife, Marice, were married December 31, 1938, in Cathlamet, WA. She died in 1987. Krieger worked as assistant fire chief of Parkrose Fire Department in Portland and fire chief at Oregon Technical Insitute in Klamath Falls. He was Springfield's fire chief from 1949 to 1969, when he retired and moved to Waldport. He was a volunteer security guard at the Newport Port Dock and a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He moved to Monroe, WA in 1978 and later volunteered as a jailer for the Monroe Police Department. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Reid of Monroe; two sisters, Dorothy Baty and Irma Carter, both of Portland; and a brother, Dan of Brentwood, TN. No services will be held. Purdy & Kerr Funeral Home in Monroe, WA is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Temple or the Springfield Fire Department.
