Sandra...did enough searches to satisfy my curiosity, you might have the below already, may have found a couple things. I'm mostly concerned with the person you believe as the immigrant in 1903, you might have proof of that. Also, my question of why the name change. A LOT of immigrants do that, but more for Angelicanization/Americanizing the name. Anyway...

Oh...Hello Shook. Normally I check the email/name against that of the person for whom I'm researching to see if they ARE the same...missed doing that this time. So, I guess you won't get any more information from Shook that You don't already have...

Ah, the 1973 fire. That has been the anguish of many genealogists. But, I'm glad you're forcing the issue with looking for additional information from other records. Sometimes that leads to almost as much.

If you have his naturalization documentation then you should have a good estimate for his arrival in the US.

In another posting you identified: Vincenzo Biston, born 1885 and Barbara Biston (sister, age 8), born 1895, residence of Rosenthal, Austria, arrival New York, Dec 1903, on the LaChampagne."
--The General manifest shows Vincenzo, 18, German, from Rosenthal, enroute to Forest City, PA, to brother P. Biston, c/o A Fagher(?) of Forest City. Barbara enroute to same person, id'd as Brother-in-law (?).
---"Wincenzo" was on the manifest listing of Aliens detained. He was to "tel for $." indicating he had insufficient funds to be allowed to travel. He was releasted to "Filipp Biston c/o William Fredensheld Main Forest Cy(City) PA(Pennsylvania)" He was detained long enough to have 4 breakfast, six dinner, and four supper.

I'm not to sure myself that the above is the correct person, you might have some proof. I'm concerned first about this sister and where she might have been while awaiting for money...unless her meals were added to those of Vincenzo's. Also, this person had a brother, living in Pennsylvania. This ship sailed from Liverpool. A lot of other immigrants did sail from Liverpool, but a large number went via Quebec, then down into the mid-west. These manifests are available by image, not transcribed. Images in some cases are unreadible.

I find this person a bit more to my liking, again, depends on your knowledge:
Jan Biston(as transcribed/written), arrival 4/5/1907 on the USS Baltic, age 18, laborer. This person was traveling with Stanislaw Czech and two others, country of citizenship had been overwritten to be Austria, both Polish race, last country was Galizian. Czech enroute to uncle Joseph Karp 3713 Wood Str, Chicago, Jan also traveling to this person as a friend.
--There is a Stanley Czech, lodger, living in Chicago in the 1910 Census, age 21, born in Poland, immigrated 1910. And, a Stanley Czech, age 20, immigrated 1909.
--I like this person because he was enroute to Chicago...where Hazel was living. The age of 18 was easily explained as many said they were 18 to avoid the "child" issue and not traveling with a family member or other sponsor.

-----------------------Ida, G-Grandmother--------
In another posting: (paraphrased) "looking for information on George Harvey Brown(Braun) b. 1864 & Ida Mae Hanson, b. 1883, lived in LaSalle County, IL (possibly Streator), they are my grandparents. Found in 1910, disappear after that.

Illinois marriages
Ida M Hansen to George Brown, 10/26/1899, Livingston County. There were two other Ida's with marriage to a George Brown but didn't match criteria.

--1910 Census shows Streator Ward, LaSalle County
George H, age 46, born in IL, to both parents born in US, married 10 years (1899/1900).
Ida, 27(1882/1883), born in IL to father born in Denmark, mother in Germany, mother of 2/2 living
Hazel E, age 9, IL
Donald, 7/12, census enumerated 26 April, so born about September 1909.

The 1920 Census for Chicago, Cook County, IL, renting, enumerated 6 Jan.
Ida May Brown, age 36, born in IL to both parents born in Denmark, widow, ?/proticol (employment type)
Hazel, age 19, born in IL, stenographer/?
Donald, 10, IL
--In the 1910 Census, Ida is 27 (enumerated April 26), in this census she is 36 (enumerated 6 January). So, it appears Ida was born between 6 Jan and 26 April of 1883.

So, it "appears" George died between 1910 and 1920. The Illinois Statewide Death Index for 1916 to 1950 (if he died before 1916, he wouldn't be listed).
There were 13 "George Borwn" that died during that period, seven were in Cook County, none in LaSalle. Of note is one that died in Fairbury, Livingston County (potential place of marriage) on January 21, 1919. But, I would "guess" if he had so recently died, Ida might not be living in Chicago...Unless, they had been and were in Fairbury to visit with her family members?

The 1926-34 Voter Registration, Oakview, John R. Burlington, RFD 1, Box 324-A, Ventura, Stone Mason. Republican
another listing: Both at Rt 2, Box 86-D, Ojai, both Democrat.
The 1938 Voter Registration for Ventura County, John R. Burlington, RFD 2, Box 86-D, Ojai, Democrat, Stone Mason, age 47

Bottom Line:
As far as the marriage of Hazel and John, based on 1920 Census, I would say IL. John "could" have been in the military during the 1920 Census and was not enumerated. But, unless Hazel moved between the Census and marriage, it would have been IL, probably Cook County somewhere.

You originally posted in Oregon Unknown, but probably based on the children living there as you indicated. If you know the location in Oregon, City Directories could help. Otherwise, I'd "guess" they spent their time in CA. The City Directories going from the late 1930's should identify a time line of when they first appear, but looks like late 1920's. The City Directories of Ventura County, Ojai, etc. should show them and probably children as they grew. If you haven't obtained their obits, I'd look for them. The location and obituary of Donald Brown would be nice. The obit of their mother would show where the children were located when she died. I didn't press the search, but I would "guess" she remarried by 1930.

Bout all I can do...
