Dietrich, Detrie, Giltner, Bower

I am working on the history of my great-great grandfather Simon Dietrich and his wife Sarah Ann Giltner. Simon was a native of Snyder County, Pa. and came to Clarion County about 1845 where he built a tannery and harness shop at the little village of Pilgreham in Salem Township. Simon had a half brother Johnathan Dietrich who lived in Fertigs in Venango County and Johnathan has many descendants in Clarion and Venango Counties. Some of the Dietrich's adopted the spelling Detrie.
Simon Dietrich's wife was Sarah Ann Giltner who was a native of Turbottville in Northumberland County, Pa. Sarah's sister Mary Elizabeth Giltner married Dr. John Bower who practiced medicine in the Lamartine area in Salem Township for 25 years before moving westward to Guthrie Center, Iowa.
Simon and Sarah Giltner Dietrich remained behind in Clarion County and are buried in Lamartine.
Simon and Sarah Dietrich had sons Brady, Paul, Jake and Dan and daughters Hannah, Lizzie and Rhoda who grew to adulthood and daughters Candas and Waldie and son John who died in childhood.
I would love to hear from others connected with the Dietrich/Detrie and Giltner and Bower families. Perhaps there are some "oldtimers" out there who would remember Simon and Sarah Dietrich's four children--Hannah, Lizzie, Jake, and Dan--who never married and lived in the family homestead at Pilgreham until their deaths in the 1930's. Would love to hear any stories of these people that would add color to the little sketch I am writing.

Sarah Keiffer Boyd - Need info

I am searching for the death date of Sarah Keiffer Boyd. I believe it to be about 1840-44 in Clarion County. Her husband was William Boyd. They had four children: William Laver, George, Mary Etta, and Elizabeth. Sarah died, and William put the children in foster homes in Illinois, and then returned to the Clarion area to remarry. He then went back to claim his children, but William and Mary declined to return to their father. Elizabeth had drowned before her father had arrived in Illinois. William and George both served as Union soldiers in the Civil War. William was a LT. in the 5th Missouri cavalry, retired to Texas. George died of an illness shortly after enlisting. Only Mary Etta has descendants, of which I am one.

Frank married Rose Ida MEEGAN from England and was later a resident of Westmoreland Co. Looking through the census info, it's possible that Frank's father is Jesse SNOW... but I can't be certain... dates are a little off... but that's not unusual for census info. Jesse looks to be the son of John and Margaret.

Seek Clara Hamler, b. bet. 1880-1895, NJ; resident PA after death of mother

My Grandfather, Cornelius Hamler (1850NJ - 1913NJ), had a first wife, Hannah/Anna (Morgan) Hamler who lived in Morris Co. & Sussex Co., NJ and who died between 1895 & 1900. In the 1900 Census, Sussex Co., NJ, Cornelius Hamler was listed as a widower, living alone.

This corresponds to what my father (Cornelius Hamler's last son) always told me about his family in New Jersey and his father's "first" family: "There were children from my father's first marriage but they were sent to Pennsylvania to live with relatives when their mother died."

Cornelius Hamler married my Grandmother-- his second wife-- in 1902.

My Dad never knew the names of his older half-siblings and it has taken me a long time to at last find one-- in the Census of 1895. The daughter of Cornelius and Anna Hamler was Clara Hamler; in the 1895 Census her age was listed as "between 5 and 20." I know that Clara was not listed in the Census of 1880 so between 1880 and 1890, according to the odd way that the Census of 1895 has of stating age-ranges, Clara Hamler was born. (She was over 5 years old in 1895.)

So I am looking for my Dad's half-siblings who moved to Pennsylvania around 1895-1900. They would likely be "cousins" of the people who they went to live with.

Also, in case it's relevant, there is a man named Abraham Hamler who, in 1818, moved from New Jersey to Pennsylvania (Clarion Co., and Lycoming Co.) where he stayed and raised a family. He died in his forties and his wife Elizabeth Riferenberick Hamler married a man with the last name of Miller. I have suspected that Abraham Hamler was my GGrandfather's brother; Abraham was born in the same area of New Jersey in 1791 that my GGrandfather was born in, in 1807. My GGrandfather was named William H. Hamler (1807NJ - 1854NJ).

Can anyone help me find my Dad's half-siblings who would have been born between 1880 and 1900? I only have the name of one: Clara Hamler but I am anxious to find them.

Thank you for any guidance or help.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Hamler Purchase
LPurch6636@aol.com

I just visited the Shotts-Hagan Cemetery, and for the benefit of others who want to visit it, I created a Google Maps at http://tinyurl.com/2upxs9

The cemetery is on a dirt road with a small sign saying "Shotts-Hagan Cemetery" off of Marshall Avenue. Nearest cross street is Arnold Avenue.

From Leeper, PA, take highway 66 north to Arnold Avenue, and turn left (west). The second street on the right is Marshall Avenue (it is marked, but it appears to be a dirt road until you turn and drive a few feet.) Turn right (north) on Marshall. Just past the train tracks there is a dirt road to the right (east), right before a two story brown house. The cemetery is just up the dirt road a few hundred feet at most. It is well maintained, and has recent internments.

I am looking for a death record of this man. I know that he lived in Madison Twp. and according to articles on his wife's longevity, he died approximately 1877. The lived near Redbank according to the articles and they were Presbyterian. I have exhausted my resources and am hoping that someone can find a death notice or some record on him so I can locate his parentage. His wife was "Betsy Freeman" noted as being "the oldest living woman in Pa" in 1905.

According to a record of their marriage, Philip Messer and Emma Duncan were married 25 Oct 1881 in Pittsburg. Emma is identified as being a 20-year-old native and resident of Clarien (sic) Co. Checking the 1870 and 1880 census listings for Clarion Co. I do not find a family in which to place her. Any suggestions as to other sources I might check to identify the names of the parents of the bride. Nancy C. Sieck

The three wives of William Singleton

My ggrandfather William Singleton out lived two wives and I am an off spring of the 3rd wife, Bertha Bulette. I appears that he fathered quite a few children between between the three wives. He died at Byron Station as a result of a railroad tradegy right after his third wife, Bertha Bulette was taken by the Great Influenica Epedemic (Spainish Flu) that swept thru our nation taking many lives.
My grandfather's name was Thomas Albert Singleton "nickname: Ike" and he and several siblings were farmed out to neighbors.
Commissioner Hess took my grandfather in and let him work for his keep.
Chris Smithson has quite a bit of the genelogy documented. If anyone can add to what I have please let me know.

Lerch was in the 8th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry (3 months, 1861).
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&gsfn=&...

He then joined the 105th Pennsylvania Inf in Company I.
History of the 105th PA:
http://www.pa-roots.com/~pacw/infantry/105th/105thorg.html

I found a journal wrote by Robert I. Boyington where twice he mentions B F Lerch who was my g g g grandfather. Benjamin was married to Valina Coleman. He also mentions some other Lerch's that I am wondering if there are any connections to Benjamin.

http://www.robert-ford.ws/105%20PA%201863.htm

Benjamin was wounded in the battle of the Wilderness on May 5 and died later around May 14.

http://www.pa-roots.com/~pacw/infantry/105th/casualtiesaug31...

Isaac Benjamin Denton who was in the 5th PA Reserve was also in the same battle. He mustered out sometime during the battle and may have been wounded. He later married Benjamin Lerch's daughter Mary Louisa Lerch.

I am looking for clues as to where Benjamin Lerch is buried. If anyone would have any clues as to where the wounded were taken after the battle of the Wilderness or where they might be buried I would appreciate your help. Thank you.

Deanna "Dani" Denton

My ancestor Adam Prentis (Prentice) is found on the 1880 census in Salem Township working as a "Pumper". Would anyone have any idea where or who he may have been working for? If he were Protestant/Anglican, does anyone know which churches were around Salem? I am hoping to find birth records for his 3 youngest sons. He was there from aprox 1873-80 Thanks, Johni

SHEEK Family

John Wesley Sheek was my gr gr grandfather. His and Martha Lane's daughter, Lou Emma Sheek, married John Thomas Franklin (JTF) Dukes in 1882 in Archer County, TX. The Dukes' were my great grandparents.

I don't know an exact year J. Wes Sheek moved his family to Mancos, CO, but would guess late 1880's to early 1890's.

The Dukes family moved to Indian Territory before 1887; they lived in the Chickasaw Nation, near present-day Alma, Stephens, OK; therefore, I never did know any of my SHEEK family other than the children of John T. F. Dukes and Lou Emma SHEEK. Their son, Vilas Aldin Duke, was my grandfather; he was born in Indian Territory 20 Mar 1889. The Dukes Family became the Duke Family when Lou Emma stated she was just one person, not two; she asked JTF to drop the s at the end of Dukes....ha

I would like to know much more about the Sheek family. Are you still in contact with any of the Mancos family? Probably most of them are descendants of J. Wes Sheek and Mary Pate, his second wife.

Martha Lane Sheek, mother of Lou Emma Sheek, died abt 7 Mar 1871 in KS while on a cattle drive with J. Wes and their four young children (9 and under).
But Mary Pate Sheek finished raising these children after her marriage to J. Wes about 1877.

Martha Lane's brother, Alfred Lane, married the sister of Charles Goodnight. Elizabeth Annie Goodnight and Alfred Lane's children were first cousins to my gr grandmother, Lou Emma Sheek.

How nice of you to answer my message; I really appreciate it, and I hope to hear from you again.

Sincerely,
Charla Duke Perry
charla@pldi.net

I know that he died sometime in between 1850-1860. I figured that since it was a small community, losing a physician would surely make headlines. Anyone have some ideas or info on this individual?

She was raised by her aunt and uncle. She passed away in 1980. Her only sister was Luella. Luella was a nurse and lived in both N. Jersey and Dover, Delaware. She passed away a few years back...anyone that has information please feel free to email me. Thanks so much

I am looking for my grandfather, George John Goodyear born 7 Oct 1879, supposedly in Erie, PA (according to his death certificate). I have been unable to locate his birth records there.

But he is shown in the 1880 Census in Edenburg, Clarion Co., PA as: Geo. Goodyear 45 and Mary Goodyear 43 (great grandparents), and their children: Minnie 18, Herman Goodyear 17, Mary Goodyear 14, Louisa Goodyear 7, Clara Goodyear 3, George Goodyear 8mo (my grandpa). Minnie, Herman & Mary were born in Baden, Germany, as were the parents. Later they went to Enderlin, ND and I do have that info.
>
I am told that Pennsylvania didn't start keeping birth records until the year of 1893.I am wondering if there is any infor. on this family around 1880.
Any suggestions how I might proceed?
Hi, I am looking for the John L. Cribbs and Susanna Christina "Crissie" Mohney family. They were married Dec 28 1865. John L Cribbs was born April 1842 to David Cribbs and Catherine Near of Monroe Township. I have no info on Crissie. She is the person I am most interested in as I have her personal photo album. She is my Great Great Grandmother. She was born in August of 1845 in New Bethlehem Township. I would love to talk to any descendents of these two and would love to share Crissie's pics with anyone interested. They lived in New Bethlehem all of their lives. John L Cribbs fought in the Civil War in Co E 62nd PA VOL INF 2nd Brigade 1st Div 5th Army camp. If anyone has info on others who fought near or with him, I would love to hear as my brother is very interested to find out anything he can about him. My brother has John L. Cribbs' gun from the civil war. Not by coincidence, my brother's name is John Cribbs. Thanks to all! Love this site!

Calendar Dates - German Reformed Church

In 1812, my ancestor was baptised by a traveling minister from the German Reformed Church, Rev. John William Weber, as recorded in the book by Paul Miller Ruff "German Church Records of Westmoreland County". Rev. Weber evidently worked to establish churches in Clarion County.

There are some notes about the dates in the book, but no explanation. Ruff mentions that he "retained the dates in their original form, and did not convert them". The church record of the baptism includes the date of birth, and there's a year and 6 day's difference (Feb. 20 1810 instead of Feb 14, 1811).

I think the German Reformed Church celebrated the new year on March 25 instead of January 1, making my ancestor's birthdate the same February, but marked by different calendars as different years. March 25, the Annunciation, was a common new year's marker for religious calendars, and was used in some parts of the British empire even after ~1755 when Britain adopted the new calendar.

Does anyone know if the use of March 25 as new year's was a practice in the German Reformed and Lutheran churches of the area in the early 1800s?
.

Can anyone give me the exact address for the Hagan Cemetery in Tylersburg?

I believe I have a distant grandfather burried there, Conrad Myers who died around 1852. How would I find a cemetery layout that would quickly show me where his tombstone is in the cemetery? I may be briefly visiting the area in September of this year.

Thanks
Roger Miller

Stewart/Madill/Harris families in Anita, PA

While searching for a specific book about the families listed above I've learned that Anita is actually in Jefferson Co. but the book, "The Stewarts of Anita, PA" by Connie Madill Wassell (1997) is or has been distributed by the Clarion County Historical Library. A link in that source transferred me to Amazon.com where I was referred to every book about Martha "Stewart" and every author named "Anita" but nothing more. Is there someone out there who can give me more information about this book such as, is it still in print and where could I find a copy? I'd also be interested in other books Connie has written. Thanks so much. Sally

I have heard that my gr grandfather and his 7 siblings were left in an orphanage in Clarion after th edeath of their mother. Their father's name was William Troutner, their mother was Narcissus carson King Trountner. My gr grandfather George Nicely Troutner b.22 Nov 1879 at Mahoning, and d.1972 in Conneaut Lake. He married Clara Loretta Myers. I would like to know how to
find out about children who may have been left in the County Home at the time. Does it still stand? Are there records? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Obit Lookup for McCoy after 1920

I would really appreciate a lookup for Samuel McCoy and/or his wife Myrta Jervis McCoy.

Samuel was born in 1841 in Blair County, PA
Myrta Jervis was born 1868-1869 in Shippenville, Clarion County, PA.
They married on September 9, 1915, in Clarion Co. and the only census I found them on together was the 1920 Census for Shippenville.

Myrtie was Samuel's second wife. He was considerably older than her and had 8 grown children.

Thanks for any help.

Lois
