Christina Sliger b. abt 1845 Cumberland Valley, Bedford County, PA - who are her parents?

I am trying to find the parents of Christina (or Christiana) Sliger born abt. 1845 in Cumberland Valley Township, Bedford County, PA. She appears for the first time in the 1850 census at the age of 5 as Christiana Dickens but from searching, I believe that her name should be Christina Sliger, and that the census taker just listed her last name as that of the family she was living with. She is found in 1850 living with Moses Dicken (spelled Dickens in this census) and Elizabeth (Brill) Dicken and their son, Moses Jr. She then appears in the 1860 census, also living with Moses and Elizabeth (Brill) Dicken (spelled Dickin), but this time she is listed as Christina Sliger...and there is now a John Wigfield (I have yet to identify him) living with them, who is listed as "Farm Laborer".

I believe that Moses and Elizabeth (Brill) Dicken are Christina's grandparents...and on one of the family trees on ancestry.com, Christina is listed as the child of Frederick Sliger and Rebecca (Dicken) Sliger. Rebecca (Dicken) Sliger died in 1845...which would make it plausible that as a baby, Christina would be sent to live with her grandparents. However, there is no mention anywhere I can find, that Frederick Sliger and Rebecca had more than 1 daughter, and that daughter is listed as Ellen Katherine Sliger, born in 1842 who later married Francis Marion Elliott. Since Moses and Elizabeth (Brill) Dicken had many children, it is also possible that Christina is a child of one of those children (she is not listed as one, though)...or that she is simply someone entirely different.

If there is anyone out there than can help me understand this puzzle, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am looking for any information about Rueben Paddock(1707-) married to Rebecca Hand(1709-) and their son, William (1749-1837) married to Sarah Little(abt 1755). There is a good posibility that they lived in the area of Bedford County, Pa. William served in the American Revolution. He and Sarah migrated to Kentucky where they died. William probably had three brothers, Ebenezer and Jonathan and Rueben.

Thora Barefoot was a delightful woman who married a brother of my great uncle Blaine Barefoot. She maintained an elaborate file of magazine articles on many subjects and worked for the government until well into her 80's. I believe she died in the 1970's or 1980's at about 100. She lived in Pleasantville (Alum Bank) and later moved to Bedford, where she died in the nursing home. My question is about her father, however. She came from somewhere in the midwest, perhaps Iowa. Her father was a surgeon with Phil Sheridan's Army of the Valley during the Shenandoah Valley campaign in 1864, and allegedly admonished Sheridan to go to Cedar Creek when he was enquiring about the gunfire that he awakend to, just before his famous ride. There must be many Barefoot relatives still in the area, although I don't believe Thora had any children of her own. Can anyone provide the name of her father and the military unit he served with?

Maria (Barton) NOBLE (2 Apr 1822 -- 31 Jan 1913, King Twp.)

Blair County Genealogical Society, Morrisons Cove Herald Obituary Collection, vol. 13, p. 6

Mrs. Maria Noble, wife of the late John Noble, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. David Potter, of Osterburg, Friday morning, January 31, at 7 o'clock, of diseases incident to old age, at the age of 91 years. For a score of years prior to her death, the deceased was exceptionally free from the physical ills which usually accompany old age, and her passing away was seemingly painless. She became a member of the Potter Lutheran church and ever thereafter professed and strictly practiced the obligations of a Christian life. She was a gentle, sweet-spirited woman who had a warm place in the hearts of all who shared her acquaintance. Mrs. Noble was held in high esteem as a Christian mother, neighbor and friend, and her long and upright life was a long-shining, good example to those who beheld its light. She was the ideal of kindness and geniality and was a friend to all. Her friends and acquaintances will miss her smiling face and pleasant words. Mrs. Noble is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Libbie Potter of Osterburg, and Mrs. Susan Woodcock of Waterside, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, February 2, in the Church of God and were conducted by her pastor, Rev. C.R. Streamer, assisted by the Rev. A.G. Herr, pastor of the Church of God. The pall bearers were: J. Frank Snavely, P.K. Brown, S.S. Baker, H.S. Stonerook, A.B. Teeter, and W.E. Baker. Interment took place in the Loysburg cemetery.

[Morrisons Cove "Herald" issue of Friday, 14 February 1913]
_______________________________________________
Daniel FLETCHER (27 Feb 1816 -- 6 Mar 1885, Monroe Twp.)

Bedford, PA "Bedford Gazette" issue of Friday, 13 March 1885, p. 4, col. 4

Death of Daniel Fletcher.

Daniel Fletcher, one of the most prominent citizens of Monroe township, the father of ex-District Attorney Fletcher, died on last Friday afternoon. He was not long sick and for some time it was confidently hoped that he would recover, but his age--he being in his 70th year--was again him and he failed to rally.

Few men in the community were held in such high and general esteem as Daniel Fletcher. He was possessed of much more than ordinary intelligence and was well read, not only upon the questions of the day but in many branches of useful knowledge. He was as honest as *** and one "whose word was as good as his bond." In the death of Mr. Fletcher the county loses one of her best citizens. An unusually large number of persons attended the funeral on Sunday. Rev. Father O'Connell, of Bedford, conducted the services and preached the sermon upon the occasion. The deceased left a widow and four children to mourn his loss. Mrs. Fletcher is now sick in bed and her condition is such as to alarm her relatives.
________________________________________________
I'm doing some amateur genealogy of my ancestry; I'm a bit stumped along the lines of the Hitchens family. Specifically, I can find my great-grandfather (William John Hitchens (1882-1956, born in Broad Top Township, Bedford, PA), and HIS father (Jack/John Hitchens, b. 1856 in England), but Jack/John's wife (Mary Opie ___?) remains a mystery- as does everything beyond Jack/John. If anybody would happen to have information along those lines, I'd certainly like to hear from them. Similarly, I have some info on the Jenkins side, but could use more. Ditto with Harper, Donaldson, McElwee, Thomas (George Calvin Thomas and ancestors), and Motter.

Most seem to be from the Six Mile Run and Defiance area.

Thanks in advance!

George Dobson, ? - 1764

I've traced one of my lines back to the Dobsons of western Pa., ending with a gggggg grandfather, George Dobson Sr. of Bedford County. He died in 1764, shot & scalped by American Indians outside Fort Bedford (Helm, David A., "Helms of Germany & Pennsylvania"). One of his sons, George Dobson Jr., later moved to Butler County.

I apparently descend from George Sr.'s daughter Lilly Ann Dobson, who m. George Lucas Sr., an Irish immigrant who farmed in Bedford County, fought in the Revolution, got charged with treason during the Whiskey Rebellion, & died in Johnstown, Cambria County in his 90s.

Anyway, wondering if anyone is familiar with this line, esp. George Dobson Sr. & his origins or George Lucas Sr. & his. George Dobson Sr. was a farmer & an early settler in Bedford County, starting a farm there sometime ca. the French & Indian War. The earliest mention of his death that I've seen comes from "Papers of Henry Bouquet," vol. 6, pp. 503-504. I have no idea where he came from, although the family seems to have had some ties to Virginia (George Dobson Jr. fought in the Revolution, & one of his enlistments was from Staunton, Augusta County, Va.).

Carter Nelsen
Minneapolis

I believe that Joseph died about 1861, and that his wife Anna Barbara remarried, but don't have documentation. Am especailly interested in his daughters Anna Mariah "Riley" Carver and Mary Carver. Riley married my great grandfather John McCrum Noble and moved to Nebraska, where she died, and Mary remained in PA settling in Altoona, and marrying Thomas Moore.
Chester Shaffer

Hello, my name is Debra Lea Mellott- Allen. I am looking for a man named Chester Shaffer (not

even sure of the spelling), and I have no idea what his middle name is. He was from Pennsylvania,

probably Bedford, Fulton County, in the late 1800's or early 1900's... You see, my Grandfather

(died Dec. 4, 1952, Born 1905) Carl Stanley Shaffer-Mellott, (SP. Mary Ivadene McKinney, Died

Mar 28,1935, d/o Myrtle Croyle and Bill McKinney, Myrtle Croyle was later married to Lloyd C.

Foor), Carl Stanley was born to this man, and I don't know what happen to him. Mary Martha

Foor, Carl's mother, married Chester Alan Arthur Mellott, s/o Martin Van Buren Mellott and

Caroline Lane, after the two children were born. Where did Chester Shaffer go, or who was he? I

know Mary Foor and Chester Shaffer were not married. Mary brought two children into the

marriage with Chester Mellott, which Chester adopted, Carl Stanley and Rose Rosetta (which their

last name would have been Shaffer). Chester Mellott and Mary together had Pearl, Florence Loretta,

Howard Thomas and Martha Louise all Mellotts, making Carl and Rose Mellotts too. Chester Alan

Arthur Mellott was born on March 3,1881 and died March or April of 1962. I don't think the

adoption was legal. I need to find out who this man was. Do you have any of these names? Places I

think to look for Chester Shaffer: Hopewell, Pa is were Rose Rosetta was from (the other child

adopted by Chester) there's also Mercer, Pa. And of course Bedford, and Fulton County (This is

where everyone is surpose to be barried).

His parents were John W EDWARDS and Ruhama WILKINS. John and Ruhama are buried in Evans Cemetery, Dudly, PA. I think it is in Huntingdon County.
I just read your old message from August 2006 on the question of the birthplace of Lawrence Barringer. I have researched these two family lines recently and found that Lawrence Barringer was born between 1760-1765 in Lehigh County, PA and died in 1838 in Pike Twp, Knox County, Ohio.
I have 225 Bemillers and 38 Barringers in my family tree (total 13,000). I am related to Barbara Bemiller, daughter of John Bemiller and Judah Barringer.
I do not know if this helps any.
Regards

I have attached a grave photo sent by a friend who was passing through Saxton, Bedford County. I'm hoping someone could identify the cemetery from the photo; there was no sign to identify the cemetery. Also, could someone identify the surname on the stone? This is the grave of a soldier who served with the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (Civil War).

Thanks,

Joe
morse73@ptd.net

Was it the families decision or was something do with the Gochnour Cemetery location?

I cannot find anything on the internet about the this cemetery other than that it was locating in King Kimmel Twp.

William Fredrick married his first wife in Mason County, Kentucky in 1849. His father signed the marriage bond with an X and the name Joseph Pedrick (maybe a speech impediment and the clerk didn't catch it???). The 1850 census states he was 22, so maybe he was born in 1828.
William married for the second time in Robertson County, Kentucky, in 1870, and states that he was born in Bedford County, PA.
It is also possible that when he traveled down the Ohio River to Kentucky, he was joined by 3 brothers, Basil, Jonathan, and Uriah.
Are there any birth records for these boys in Bedford County around the 1820s? And any marriage record for a Joseph Fredrick, or Pedrick, around 1800? There's also a chance that Joseph's mom was named Christine. Thanks for you time. mike

I am researching the descendants of Thomas Hunt, who emigrated from England or Ireland to America, settling in Bedford County by 1800. He married Nancy Rea (b. about 1775, d. Nov 1865) and died Jan 1849 in Cumberland Valley Twp.
Their children:
1. Thomas b. about 1800
2. David b. about 1803
3. Joseph b. 1805 d. 1857 m. Maria Radebaugh
4. George Washington b. about 1808 m. Hannah ? lived in Schellsburg
5. Mary b. 1810-1820 m. John Rollins?
6. Jane b. 1810-1820 m. --- Mitchell, moved to Kansas
7. Sarah b. 1810-1820 d. unmarried
8. Ann b. 1810-1820 d. unmarried
9. Martha b. 1820 married Nathan Lee

I have some information on the families of Joseph (my g-g-g-grandfather) and George W., but not much else. I recall a paperbound book on the Hunt history written by H.C. Hunt and Ada Hunt Klingensmith, but I haven't been able to find a copy. Can anybody do lookups on Thomas Hunt's will in Bedford County courthouse, or land records?--T.H. bought land in C.V. Twp. in 1827 and passed it on to Joseph, who passed it on to his son William Joseph, but I don't know where that land was located. I also would like to know where Thomas and Nancy Hunt were buried--perhaps on private land? Any help is appreciated

Helsel/ Holtzel Coat of Arms?

I am looking for the coat of arms or crest for the Helsel family line or " Holtzel". I am wanting to get the coat of arms for my husband who is a helsel for our anniversary that will be coming up soon. My father inlaw told me that the Helsel had there very own coat of arms and it was described as follows: There was a helmet on the top of the page and below that there is a doverman who is standing and behind the doverman the colors are Black, Red and Gold. He only has a rough copy of this. I have looked on some websites and nothing comes up for that coat of arms/crest of what he has described.

I am hoping someone knows of the true coat of arms so, I can purchase it for my husband. I do not want to spend alot of money on something that is NOT the real coat of arms for our family.

Any help would be appreciated. If anyone knows of information about this or can guide me in the right direction it would be appreciated. Thank you.

The only children I can name at this time are Robert (1816-1897) and William (1820-1908); both are buried in Wayne Co, OH.
John Snider d. 1809 Southampton Twp...his kin?

I've puzzled over this Snider/Snyder for some time, and would like to definitively place him either in or out of my family group. John died in 1809 in Southampton Twp., leaving widow Mary, and children John, Philip, Jacob, Easter, Mary, and Elizabeth. His will witnesses included Adam and Jacob Weimer, and Henry Kinsman. Co-executor was Joseph Sparks, Jr.

The following year, 1810, the census for Southampton placed Mary and children next to George Snyder, my 3rd gr-grandfather, in that part of Southampton Twp. which now straddles the Monroe/Southampton line between PA Rt. 26 and Chaneysville. The latter George, who came from Berks County, PA, ca. 1795, died in 1841, and was married to Maria Barbara Kochendorfer, also of Berks. Barbara Snyder died in 1853, while living with daughter Catherine Diehl.

Many of the same people/families took part in the estate sales for both John, in 1809, and George, in 1841. There is ample reason to believe that they were neighbors. There is also the possibility that a later John Snider and brother Jacob Snider, both living near Frame Church in Monroe Twp., were sons of the 1809 John. Indeed, an older female family member is shown on Jacob's 1830 census, which might indicate his mother's presence.

Has anyone done, or seen, definitive work that proves a relationship between 1809 John Snider and his Snider neighbors in southeastern Bedford County? In addition, has anyone come across a cemetery listing for a Mary Snider, with dates in the neighborhood of 1772-1835, in the Monroe/Southampton Twp. area?

This is a sticky one, and hopefully someone has some answers!

From The Bedford Gazette, February 16, 1912, Page 1

William A. White
William Abner White died at his home in Cumberland Valley early Tuesday morning of a complication of diseases, aged 79 years, five months and 28 days.

Mr. White was born near Norfolk, Va., on August 15, 1832. He was a son of Nicholas Abner and Annie (Pendergrass) White and a cousin of the late Senator Pinckney White of Baltimore.

On August 19, 1865, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Haney by Rev. Father Thomas Hayden. He is survived by four children, as follows: Gregory Asphy White of Pittsburg, Mrs. Annie B. Turner of Davenport, Ia., William Pinckney White of Six Mile Run and Nicholas A. White of Cumberland Valley.

Mr. White was a ship builder by trade. He was drafted into the Confederate army at the outbreak of the Civil War and served as a spy for some time within the Union lines. As such he was captured and imprisoned at Columbus, O., for six months and was later transferred to Cumberland, where he served three months, after which he was released, having taken the oath of allegiance.

Having been released he never returned to the South. He came here in July 1864 and settled in Cumberland Valley where he has since made his home, being engaged in farming and at carpentering.
