Hi, VERY interested in the SCHLESSMAN information in your post. Do you know if Johan Nicholas Schlessman had a son Christoph or Christopher, brother to Maria Elisabeth? If so, that makes Johann my my greatx7 grandfather and would you have where in Germany he came from. Also, any chance you have the names of his parents? Thanks so much!
I believe you may find some records in the PA archives. I don't know if the Berks County court system maintains the records of the actual case.

See Berks County in this link (Almshouse and Prison Account Books):

http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/DAM/rg/rg47m.htm

You might consider contacting the Berks Co. court and ask about records.

http://www.co.berks.pa.us/courts/cwp/view.asp?a=1172&q=4...|

Hello,

I'm looking at a John A Walsh in the 1920's census at the Reading Ward 16, Berks, Pennsylvania.

He's a prisoner at the age of 21. I don't know if he is the same person I'm looking at. How can I verify this? where would the prison records be or court records?

thanks!

I have a few pictures of her and her older sister on the "farm."

Are the PA Tobias' interested in us that have become so far flung.

Is it weird having your mom related to your dad? I have found that a number of states, towns and dates keep repeating themselves. Besides PA...VA, West VA, Herndon, Berryville, WVA, DC, & 12/26. Weird..

Liane

HELLO, AM VERY INTERESTED IN NEW TOBIAS WEBSITE/DATA, ETC.

My Mom Grace Tobias Snyder was daughter of William J. Tobias & his wife Ida Klick Tobias. William Tobias (my grandfather) was son of John Tobias & wife Hannah Hoffa Tobias. This/our John Tobias had 4 wives, well documented in other Tobias histories, & was stonemason. This/our John Tobias (my greatgrandfather) was also descended from Daniel & Ludwig, etc. Am not at home so don't have my full info handy, will get it together & post again. We Florida Tobias clan are very interested in all this, I did visit Donaldson last trip to PA BUT terrible rain slowed us up.
Tobias cousins also still live in PA, some in Schuylkill.
Grandparents William & Ida Tobias buried in Tremont/Donaldson cemetery still.

WHAT ABOUT THE NEW TOBIAS WEBSITE OR WHATEVER FORM IT IS, AM VERY MUCH INTERESTED!! PLEASE POST ACCESS INFORMATION.
Thanks, will be happy to share.
No problem. I find so much of this as confusing. I have a few people that are showing up as their own mother. Other people being 150 years old. So a lot is very confused

Donaldson is in PA. In a county now called Schuylkill.

Coal country. The DAR just emailed dates for Ludwig's time in the Army for the Revolution.

In my notes John did not move. Buried in Upper Bern TWP, Berks Co., PA My notes show that he married Maria Magdalena Ketner in 1779. Daniel was born 1792 in Bern TWP, Berks Co. PA. Son Thomas Jefferson born in Donaldson in 1846. Youngest of 16 children

His wife was Polly Geiger, and their children were: John; Mary, who married Israel Morris; Peggy, who married Hiram Yeager; William, who married Mary Bower, and had Clinton, Alwilda (m. to Frank Auman, of Birdsboro) and Kate (of Massachusetts); Catharine, who married Frank Sell, and had a daughter Mary (m. to a Mr. Finger); Jonathan; and Edward, who married Sarah Seider, and had children Willis, Frank, Mary and Nora.

Children mentioned, some baptized at First Reformed:

Tobias, Maria, parents John & Maria 4/20/1818 1818 spons: Althaus Catharine
(I think she is dau of the John, of Bern, who m Marie Althaus in 1814, not of Polly Geiger, (considering who her sponsor is).

Tobias, Catharine Johann & Polly 11/13/1810 12/25/1810 Geiger Stophel & Catharine(I believe these are the grandparents)

Tobias, Margarethe Johan & Polly 8/31/1812 10/4/1812, spons: Eusebeis Mattis & Catharine (I think this is Peggy in the BIO who married Hiram YEAGER.)

Tobias, Catharine John & Polly 7/24/1814 9/2/1814 Heder John/Geiger Catharine [She is the Kate who went to MASS?]

Tobias, John of John & Polly 9/21/1816 11/16/1816 Philips John & Elizabeth (GEIGER mother)
The BIO says:
John Tobias, son of John Jacob, was born at Reading Sept. 20, 1816, and died at Hamburg March 20, 1903. He learned the shoemaker's trade, and followed it during the winters, while his summers were devoted to the making of bricks. On April 7, 1837, he located in Hamburg as a brickmaker, and for several seasons worked for Squire Miller. He then engaged in the business on his own account, following it until his retirement, about twenty years before his death. He was a Republican, and in 1879 served as chief burgess. He was twice married. On April 7, 1840, he married Hannah Albrecht, daughter of Frederick Albrecht, of Hamburg, and they had two sons, Albert F. and William A., of Reading (who had two sons, John and William). After the death of his first wife he married, Nov. 3, 1845, Annetta Schappell, daughter of Daniel and Catharine (Smith) Schappell, of Schuylkill county, Pa. To this union were born: Charles H.; John A., deceased, who married Bella Faust; Mary C., deceased, wife of William G. Sheradin; J. Daniel, de-ceased, who married Lovina Baer; Sarah E., deceased, who was an invalid for thirty years; and Lenora E., wife of William Baer.

Tobias, William of John & Maria 7/5/1820 8/16/1820 Boyer Jacob & Elizabeth - Is he the William who m Mary BOWER in the BIO or is he a son of Marie ALTHAUS and John TOBIAS? It is unclear since the mother is shown as Maria and not Polly in this baptism)

He is shown in First Reformed Deaths:
Tobias, William, S. of John & Mary, intermittent fever 10/19/1862 age 42/3/14

Does anyone have all of the children of John TOBIAS and Marie ALTHAUS?

Need clarification!

I have a relative who lived in Douglassville, PA who become a master stonemason. Jacob Kerlin (1776-1857) became a stonemason and is supposed to have established a distinctive "herringbone" style of masonry that exists on at least 7 extant structures in Berks County. The 1801 Chapel of St. Gabriel's Church is attributed to Jacob Kerlin. His father, John Kerlin, Jr., was a gun manufacturer and farmer, not a stonemason. Can anyone assist with other ancestors who may have been stonemasons in Berks County in the period 1796 - 1850s? Any help appreciated.

On his WWI draft registration, he states he was born in Myerstown. I wonder whether there would be a religious record of his birth, either 1889 or 1890, at the church responsible for the cemetery in which he is buried. Here is a link to its website. Even if they do not have records, they may be able to tell you who does.

http://www.myerstownzionumc.org/AboutZion.html

It is interesting that in 1900, Arthur is living as a boarder even though he is only 11. It might be that the Maggie Wetzel (d. 1898) buried in the same cemetery is his mother. His father may have also died. I wonder if there are any records in Orphans Court for him. They may be in Lebanon County rather than Berks because that appears to be where he was probably living.

In the 1820 census there is a Jacob Wetzel, age 12, living in the household of Jacob and Mary Wetzel.

Name: Jacob Wetzel
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1818
Age in 1870: 52
Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Home in 1870: Jackson, Lebanon, Pennsylvania
Race: White
Gender: Male
Value of real estate: View image
Post Office: Myerstown
Household Members: Name Age
Jacob Wetzel 52
Mary Wetzel 51
Malinda Wetzel 21
Jacob Wetzel 12
Emma Brendel 1
Source Citation: Year: 1870; Census Place: Jackson, Lebanon, Pennsylvania; Roll M593_1361; Page: 148; Image: 297.

If anybody has the records it would be the Berks County Historical Society.

It has an online searchable database. Here is the link:

http://www.berkshistory.org/library/

I already searched for Arthur and nothing shows, but this does not mean there is no record. I contacted the Society about 2 weeks ago to learn about the database. The online records only reflect about 50% of their records at present. They continue to work on putting more records online.

If you cannot get there yourself, they will do research for you. It appears that it is $50 for 4 hours of research.

Here is the link:
http://www.berkshistory.org/library/researchpolicy.html

You could obtain the marriage license application from Berks Co. which should show the name of the parents of the bride & groom. The last time I obtained a copy it was $1 for an uncertified copy. I don't know, however, if it will help you to make the connection between Jacob 1, Jacob 2, & Arthur. It might have a minister's name on the record that can be read. (Some of them can be difficult to read.) If that is the case, maybe that would give you a clue to a church record. There may be baptism records and sometimes there are sponsors shown that point to a family connection. The LDS Family History Center has over 500 titles for Berks Co. Many records are by minister's name rather than church name.

Here's what the LDS FHC has:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermain...

Here is the address if you want to write for the actual marriage record:

Register of Wills
Berks County Services Center
633 Court Street - 2nd Floor
Reading, PA 19601

The procedure it to write to ask for the cost of the document & they respond. If you include your email address, they will probably respond by email.

I hope this helps.

Looking for Wetzels in Berks county

I am looking for the family/ancestors of the following family:
Arthur J. Wetzel b. 19 Sept 1889/1890 d. Aug 1971 (lived in Myerstown after he married in 1911 according to census records, however, I have found what I believe is him living in various households as a servant and a boarder on censuses in Berks county prior to 1911) married Clara L. Boyer on Sept 2, 1911 (listed in Berks County Registrar of Wills-Marriage Applications). Clara was born 15 Jan 1894; I believe her parents were William Boyer and Lizzie Risser/Reeser? Arthur and Clara had several children:
Arthur William 1911/1912-1996 (this is my great-grandfather)
Florence S. 1914/1913-?
Bertha M. 1916-?
Raymond M. 1917-?
Mabel K. 1919-?
Ernest J. 1927/1926-?

I believe Arthur J.'s father's name may have been Jacob; Arthur J. is buried in a plot with a Jacob Wetzel 1818-1878 who was married to Mary/Maria Pfeiffer 1815-1888 and possibly also to Margaret "Maggie" Elter(?) 1861-1898 (her tombstone says wife of Jacob... however there is a big age difference and I wonder if she wasn't married to a son of Jacob who was also named Jacob). I am interested in trying to figure out the link between Arthur J. and Jacob Wetzel; could they be grandfather/grandson?

I'd appreciate any and all help regarding this family, even if it's just a suggestion on where to look. By the way, I've been searching ancestry.com (census records, etc) and the Berks County Registrar of Will's various indexes online. The more I look the murkier the line beyond Arthur J. gets.

Thank you.
Angie

Salg2008 and SueMarcus63,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have access to a book called PA German Marriages at a local library, but I'm not sure if it's the same one to which you refer, I was planning on checking it out anyway.

Thanks for the pointer on procedure for requesting copies from the Berks County Registrar of Wills; I have a couple marriage applications, etc I wanted to get copies of and wasn't sure of the procedure for requesting copies since their website with the online index did not say anything about that!

I've been on the LDS site looking for records regarding another branch of my family but then backed off when I realized that some of the online records were for what looked like the same people with different information attached; in other words, it seemed like whoever submitted the information had mixed up individuals with the same names, etc. I'll check the link of Berks Co. records you supplied.

I really appreciate you both taking the time to reply to my query!
Thanks for your help!

Salg2008: I have copies of Arthur J. Wetzel's WWI and WWII draft cards and the censuses that you refer to from ancestry.com. I talked to my grandmother over the weekend to ask her what she remembered about them and according to her, Arthur J. grew up with his parents in the house that he later lived in with his wife in Myerstown. That is what makes the census in 1900 on which he is listed as an 11 yr. old boarder in a household in Berks county and the 1910 census in which he is listed as a servant in a household in Berks county puzzling to me. I wrote the Berks Co. Registrar of Wills to find out about obtaining a copy of his marriage application where I hope he listed his parents' names. Arthur J.'s wife Clara also worked as a servant at the same time in Berks county and my grandmother mentioned that... my grandmother also told me that Clara's mother died when she was very young which also jives with information I've gleaned about her family from censuses. Thanks for the info on the UM church in Myerstown; I knew Arthur J. and the rest were buried in the United Brethren cemetery there but I didn't know that the UM church began life as a United Brethren church. Maybe the UM church is where the family moved after they left Trinity; I'll check there next; the Myerstown library director suggested Tulpehocken Historical society.

SueMarcus63,
I was able to visit a library on Friday that had the Trinity Tulpehocken Church records and a copy of PA German Marriages; I spent a couple hours going through the church records and copying all the information on Wetzels. I noticed that Wetzels only start appearing in the baptismal/marriage records around the late 1830's/40's and then there is only short period of time that they appear; it makes me wonder where they were before this and where they went after. Did they stop attending a church? Or move to another church? I believe the Frederick and Sarah Wetzel listed are some relation--possibly parents or grandparents?-- of Jacob Wetzel b. in 1818 b/c they are listed as living in his household in Myerstown on a census that I have. I also wonder does the Mrs. listed in front of Sarah's name on the marriage record mean that she was a widow or was it an indication of her age at the time marriage (I recently read an article that said that years ago Mrs. indicated a woman's age and not necessarily her marital status). However, if she is same Sarah that I found listed on the 1880 census mortality schedule as having died of heart disease, it stated there that her father was born in Ireland, her mother in PA, and Heffelfinger does not sound like an Irish name. Jacob Wetzel is also listed on the same mortality schedule as having died of stomach cancer; both of his parents, it is stated there, were born in PA.

Mary Sayman,
The Wetzels you list in your first reply may or may not be mine; I have not traced my Wetzels that far back. I am only back to 1898-- when my great-great-grandfather, Arthur J. Wetzel was born. I am currently working on digging up who his parents were and what, if any, the link is between him and the Jacob Wetzel b. 1818 d. 1878 that he is buried in the same plot with.

It's good to correspond with others on this subject. I'm the only one in my immediate family interested in genealogy, and it helps to be able to share information and such with others.

Angie

He was born in Allentown (maybe Scranton - I don't have the records in front of me), on 20 April 1912. Married 31 March?, 1935 to Julia Laura Wellman at Ithaca, NY. Died 13 August 1990 at Kenmore, NY. He graduated from the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY in 1934, with a Bachelors of Music Degree.

I am looking for information about both Jonas and details regarding his life.

Anything I have I will gladly share with you, including the text that appears on the War Service Record.
Liane:
The BIO on this family does not have a son John. There is a Jonathan TOBIAS:

Jonathan Tobias, second son of Ludwig, was born in Bern township May 3, 1773. He married Catharine Hain (born July 12, 1778, died April 3, 1845), and among their children were: John H.; Samuel; Maria, who married Henry Fleicher; Rebecca, who married Benjamin Reber; Elizabeth, who married Henry Body; and Eliza, who married Benjamin Haas.

It doesn't mention a son Daniel. Do you have dates for your family?

Could Daniel be a son of Ludwig Jr? The BIO says he had 6 sons and 7 daughters, but does not mention all of them:

p 1554 of History of Berks Co:

Ludwig, born July 12, 1763, died in Bern township Sept. 26, 1826. His wife was Elizabeth Strunck, and they had six sons and seven daughters, among these being Jonathan (1800-1803); and Jacob (1803-1883), whose son Charles was the father of Irwin.

Diana
