1751 Germany, England , New Jersey, Pa. PRAUGHT (PRATT) BEGINNINGS - PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND - J. Leonard Praught, 21 Pine Grove Lane, Waverley NS B2R 1R2 Canada Corrections, additions, correspondence to the writer would be most welcome........... Frederick Praught (Pracht) first appears as a private in th King's Rangers posted March 1782 to the Island of St John (renamed Prince Edward Island in 1799) under Captain Samuel Hayden to relieve Major Hierlihy's troop. The King's Rangers were local militia troops raised by British Loyalists in New England. Many of the officers of this troop posted to PEI had originally joined the New Jersey Volunteers. As the war in US began dying, various efforts were made to attract Loyalists settlers to the Island, including the soldiers posted there. In Oct. 1785 by an order in council, Governor Patterson confirmed a grant to Frederick Praught "formerly of Monmouth Co. New Jersey" of 100 acres in Lot 50 between lands granted Lt. Throckmorton (also of Monmouth Co., NJ) and Ensign Beers (of NJ) in an area that became known as Cherry Valley. Some of this land had been vacated by the earlier French settlers. In 1788, Fred traded his grant for another nearby, beside Beers. Fred prospered as a farmer, adding 150 acres from Throckmorton and Beers in 1794-95. Finally, in 1801, he purchased 200 acres in the hamlet of Pownal Lot 49 and relocated there, allegedly because his relatively younger wife Susannah Wagner wanted to be close to German speaking families - the Jenkins (Henckell) and Ballem (Baum). The earlier property was sold to the Irving's and in more recent times was referred to as "the old Irving place". The Pownal property can be located by Fred's sale of an acre on which "the frame of a meeting house has been lately erected" to the Wesleyan Methodist Society for the sum of 20 pounds in 1812. Going back to the family name: in June 1784, Frederick appears as "Prout" in the troop muster role, with a wife and 2 children under 10 years, having drawn provisions to April 1784, and being granted 100 acres Pownal Bay Lot 50. Note, most officers had families with them, but of 62 privates only 3, including Fred, did so. In March 1785, he is listed as Frederick Praught in a general election poll. In Oct. 1785, his land grant deed is to Frederick Praught. He appears as Frederick "Prock" in a newspaper petition 1792 Feb. 25 supporting Governor Fanning. The 1798 census of Lot 50 has Frederick Praught as well as his son John Praught, as latter now married. In 1802, Frederick Praught served as a juror on a Supreme court case. His will prepared in 1821 is signed Frederick "his X mark" Praught. Family tradition says the name was previously Pracht, meaning "splendid" in German, and the pronunciation Prokt led to Praught when spelled by Scottish clerks. I found some support for this in Pennsylvania where a Daniel Pracht arrived in 1751 from Germany and appears in PA records as Pracht, Prag, Braugh, Braught, and Praught. However, the only current Praughts I have ever found are all descendants of our Fred. Fred Praught, the Loyalist, married Susannah Wagner. They had 8 children grow up - Catherine, John, Mary, William, David, Ann, Peter, and Fred. The eldest two, Catherine bc1778 and John, were born in USA before coming to PEI. The rest were born on the Island, the youngest - Fred, in 1802. Fred, the Loyalist, died 1831 Dec 22 at 102 years according to the newspaper, although the 1798 census enters him in 16-60y column, rather than the 60+ needed to suit age listed at death. Fred's will, prepared 1821 Nov 16, divided the Pownal property 50 acres each to his sons William, David, Peter, and Fred; 5 shillings each to daughter Catherine, and son John as they have received their "full share beforehand"; 5 shillings to daughter Mary "as she has received one good cow already"; and to daughter Ann "all my moveable property except the household furnishings and farming utensils" and "what she has received beforehand to be deducted from her share of the cattle"; lastly "myself and my dearly beloved wife Susannah shall be maintained in a decent moderate manner .... by our above named sons". The will was not proved until Oct 1841 - perhaps this is when Susannah died?, or perhaps prompted by the temporary return of recently married Fred jr from NB? 1. Wright County, Mo 1883 Henry George Pracht and his wife, Elizabeth Driesel. Their son George Henry Pracht lists his birthdate May 22, 1883 and birth location as Wright County, Mo., on his Social Security application. They had another son, Charles. .. Henry George is supposed to have owned a store, perhaps hardware, in Springfield, for a while. An irate person or persons are supposed to have deliberately burned it down, date unknown, sometime after 1884 and before 1905. The last name may have been Von Pracht. After the loss of the store, Henry George and Elizabeth had a farm. While working on the farm, Henry George is said to have had a double hernia. Farm workers, in an effort to help him, are supposed to have held him upside down and tried to push the herniated material back into his abdomen. He died and family lore questions whether the laborers efforts to help him caused his death or not. Could this event have been odd enough to warrant a newspaper write-up? Reply: I do not find anything about Henry George Pracht. "Springfield, Greene County, Missouri Newspaper Abstracts — 1903," published by the Ozarks Genealogical Society reveals in the Feb. 3, 1903, edition that Ana Pracht divorced Charles Pracht and her maiden name Stephenson was restored to her. (This item lists the name as Pratch and Bratch).........

1896 Oregon Republican League: Republican League Register of Oregon, The Register Publishing Company, 1896, page 260. PRACHT, MAX, of Ashland, was born in Palatinate, Germany, in 1846, and two years later his father fled from the persecution that also drove Schurz, Hecker, Sigel and Rosecrans to the land of liberty, and brought his family to America. He served in the navy during the Rebellion, and is a comrade of Burnside Post No. 23, G. A. R. He is the proprietor of the famous Peachblow Paradise orchards, at Ashland, and is still waiting for the Cleveland administration to raise enough revenue or sell enough bonds to buy him a gold medal he won as the first prize against all comers at the World’s Fair. He is a Republican of irrepressible enthusiasm. It was born and bred in him. Much of his time the past two yeas has been spent traveling in the interest of the American Protective Tariff League, of which he is financial secretary. During the last Republican administration he was Collector of Customs and special commissioner in charge of the salmon fisheries of Alaska, and his Republicanism was so offensive that, as soon as Cleveland was inaugurated, the telegraph and a special steamer were used to inform him that he was removed from office. In 1894 Mr. Pracht was chairman of the Oregon delegation at the National League convention, at Denver, and was made vice-president for Oregon for the ensuing year. Wherever he goes, whether at home or abroad, his voice and en are used to acquaint the world with the beauties and resources of Oregon, including both immigration and the investment capital........

Note: My great grandparents Frances SZCZYGIEL and Anna DOMBROWSKI immigrated from Poland to the US. My grandfather Anton SZCZYGIEL born May 18, 1874 was their first son and also the first of their children to be born in the US. Their other children were: daughters - Frances m ? SKIBITSKI, Anna m ? JEWESKI, Julia M. ? pratch, and Martha; sons - Felix and Peter. I know that all the sons were born in the US, but I don't know which, if any, of the daughters that were. My grandfather married Rosalia PERSZYK on January 31, 1899. Rosalia was born in Chicago, Illnois. Her parents were Paul and Rosalia HAUSER. Rosalia HAUSER was the community nurse / midwife. Paul was apparently quite well educated and when they immigrated to the US used most of their luggage allotment to bring books. The PERSZYKs lived in a large house in Perham along the shore of a lake.........
