At the time I was searching very out of the way cemeteries and took pictures of many who were not even related, just because they were there and I had a camera.

Looks like Anna Weng__ w/o Christian, d.
Anyone know about 19th century carpet weaving?

My 3x great grandfather was a carpet weaver on Front Street in Highspire. He lived in Highspire by 1840, and owned the land on Front St from the mid 1850's. He specifically owned five adjacent lots containing two small wooden frame houses, along Front Street between Front St and the Railway station. He worked as a ticket agent in the Highspire railway station, and he had his loom set up in the railway station and wove his rugs there. The census always describes him as a weaver or carpet weaver. The people immediately around him in 1840 - 1850 were craftsmen and store keepers, but by 1870 they were more likely to be laborers. Two of his immediate neighbors from the earlier era witnessed his will in 1880.

I want to know what kind of carpets he wove, and what kind of loom he used. Does anyone here have knowledge about that or know who would?

Thanks!

Dora

Yes. Carl F. Blumenstein and Emma Catherine Waggoner were my grandfather and grandmother. It gets a little confusing as to who Emma's father is, however on her marriage certificate she lists Christian Waggoner as her father, mother unknown. Christian’s mother and father were Joseph Waggoner and Harriet E. Zimmerman. Christian was a brother to Joseph A. Waggoner. Emma was raised or lived with Joseph and Harriet. I have a copy of Carl and Emma's marriage certificate and picture of their head stones (St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Silver Spring Twp, Cumberland Co, PA. I also have a picture, from my dad, which shows the back of the log cabin where Emma and her father Chris Waggoner were born as stated by my father.

Each county is different in what is available. Lebanon County also only goes to about 1850. You'll have to contact Dauphin County for what you need then. Here is a good description of what is in Orphan's Court Dockets

http://www.yorkcountyarchives.org/record_details.asp?id=34

The wills there only go up to 1850 or so, and hte orphans court to 1870s. I'm researching someone who died in the early or mid 1880s.

What is specifically in the orphans court dockets?

Dora

No, that would be the microfilm. Follow this link

https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1999196

then click on the link that says

Browse through 3,201,289 images

then each of the counties will appear and click on Dauphin. From there you have to find the index which each county has organized differently

Pennsylvania probate records can be found at familysearch.org. Click on United States then scroll down to Pennsylvania Probate records. They are then catalogued by county. Usually there is an index for those records. Hope that helps.

Linda

The librarian at the Dauphin County historical society dropped a hint that it is possible to download wills and/or probate online. Is this true? I went to the Dauphin County probate court web site and couldn't find a link to do it.

The deed for the sale of Jacob Weiss's land in 1884 mentions that he left a will. The estate was definitely probated, according to the deed, which had all sorts of highly unusual detail, because there wasn't enough money to cover his debts.

Weiss/ Wise, and Dehart.

Jacob Weiss/ Wise owned lots 87 through 91 at Commerce and Front Streets, most of it I think between Front St and the railroad tracks. He also worked at the Highspire railroad station - and wove rugs on his loom while at work.

His son in law, John Dehart, had property on 2nd street near Vine, and more of it near Second Street and the turnpike, and he also bought one lot between Front St and the railroad track and didn't sell it until 1926. He bought Jacob Weiss's land and sold it in 1902.

John Dehart worked at the Highspire distillery and was also a fireman; I don't know what sort of fireman or if he was both at once. He came from old Pennsylvania Dutch families who could be counted on to be financially well off by having several economic irons in the fire.

I'm looking for people who are knowledgeable about the history of downtown Highspire. I have an ancestor who gradually acquired five adjacent plots of land - including lots 88 - 93 or so - between 1840 and 1870. It was between Front and Water Streets, and the railway track ran through the middle.

I've tried the Highspire Historical Society; they aren't easy to contact and maybe I got the wrong person. I'm not getting very far. I fail to see what for instance an archivist who lives in Texas can do for me; I need someone who knows the history, particularly as very little of the history seems to have been published.

Yours,
Dora Smith

Thank you for your offer of help especially for those of us not in PA. I'm trying to get information on my mother's family that lived in Dauphin County. I'm not sure the geography of Harrisburg so I don't know if it is within your offer of help but here it goes. My 2nd great grandfather is where I get stuck. Joseph S McCord and his wife Maria or Mariah on some census. I'm trying to find any information on Maria. I would love to know her maiden name from my research I'm guessing they were married around 1845 or 1846. Middletown is where they lived in all the census records that I've found. Any help would be very appreciative or just a response that it is not near Harrisburg. Many thanks,
James

The Cumblers were very prominent and very involved in the business world of Dauphin County, especially Steelton/Highspire area. Have looked for this article or specific pages tonight and can't locate them. Would love to know where I can find that book in a library in that area?
Since I live out of state, I know I could not check it out but if I knew the Author, maybe I can find a used book store in that area that may have a copy for sale.
I am looking for my gr-grandmother Sarah Elizabeth Brown Hoover 1861-1888. I was told she is buried in the Old Market St. cemetery, is there or ever a cemetery by this name in Harrisburg and what is there address? Thank you for your help.

Within the last 20 years, there was a man from Dauphin County by surname of Hocker that served in Pa. Politics..was it Clinton P. Hocker or Blaine C. Hocker? Seems like he was a delagate to Pa. legislature or House of Delegates. He probably lived over in the Steelton or Harrisburg area.
