The volume "Washington: Northwest Frontier (author and date unknown) chronicles this branch of the Stuchell family beginning on page 394:
"THE STUCHELL FAMILY originated in Holland and the history of the Stuchells in the State of Washington starts with Harry W. Stuchell, born in Plumville, Pennsylvania, 1861, deceased, 1944.
H.W. Stuchell married Mary Jane Hughes of Santa Ana, California, June 12, 1888. She was born in 1871 and passed away in 1950. While in California, H.W. Stuchell was in the carpentry trade.
Early in 1889 he moved to Centralia, Washington where he operated a general dry goods store. In 1894, he moved to Chehalis, Washington where he entered the dry goods business as well as going into the lumber business with John Reynolds. A small lumber operation was started at Reynolds, Washington, and it was continued until 1902. During this period of time, he and John Reynolds procured a lumber operation at Winlock, Washington, which they ran for approximately one and a half years, until it was sold.
In 1902 the Eclipse Mill Company in Everett was purchased from Gould & Keene. It was at the time of purchase more of a shingle and siding operation rather than a sawmill operation. The Eclipse Mill Company was converted in 1908 into a strictly sawmill operation-cutting practically all douglas fir. His partners in the Eclipse Mill Company were: W.I. Carpenter of Minneapolis and William Murphy of Everett, Washington. This partnership continued until 1914 when H.W. Stuchell purchased William Murphy's interest. H.W. Stuchell continued as manager of the operation until the time of his death.
Mr. Stuchell had one of the longest periods of service as officer and trustee of the West Coast Lumbermen's Association and its predecessors of any men in the industry. He was a charter member of the Southwestern Washington Lumber Manufacturers' Association, formed in Centralia, 1899. He was an active member of the West Coast Lumber Manufacturers' Association, formed in 1911 as a fusion of the several industry organizations then in existence. He was trustee of the West Coast Lumbermen's Association from 1920 to 1922, and again from 1929 to 1937. The Association members in Northern Washington again chose him as their representative on the Board in 1940; and he served them in this capacity until his death in February 1944. For several years Mr. Stuchell was also vice president of the Association for Washington....
.... Edwin Wesley Stuchell graduated from the Everett High School in 1912 and spent one year in Andover and entered the University of Washington in 1913. He left the University in 1917 and enlisted in World War I as sergeant in the Quartermaster Corps at Presidio, San Francisco and within a few weeks he was sent to Fort Sill, Oklahoma and was assigned to Truck Company 380.
In May 1918, Edwin Wesley was sent to Officer Training School in Field Artillery at Camp Zachary Taylor, Louisville, Kentucky, and he remained there until the termination of the war in November 1918.
Edwin Wesley became associated with his father in 1918 at the Eclipse Mill Company and in 1925 he became superintendent of the Eclipse Mill Company in 1932, he became assistant manager in which capacity he continued until 1944 when his father passed away. He then became President of the company.
During the period from 1920-1930, the Eclipse Mill Company exported approximately 65% of their 50 million board feet capacity per year of fir lumber to Japan, England, and Holland.
In 1946, the Eclipse Mill Company was sold to a group of Eastern wholesalers whose only method of securing lumber for their retail yards was by going into the manufacturing branch.
E.W. Stuchell was retained as manager of this operation until September 1948 at which time the plant was re-purchased from the wholesalers by the Wyman Lumber Company: M.A. Wyman, M.H. Wyman and David Wyman, and W.D. Carpenter, H.W. Stuchell II, and E.W. Stuchell, and is being operated at the present time as a partnership with E.W. Stuchell serving as president and general manager, H.W. Stuchell II as assistant general manager, and W.D. Carpenter as sales manager. The Eclipse Mill burned to the ground in May of 1962 and was not rebuilt. In August of 1962 E.W. Stuchell, H.W. Stuchell II, M.A.Wyman family, and Bryant Dunn bought the Biles Coleman Lumber Co. in Omak, Washington. While operating the next twelve years they expanded into a Plywood plant at Omak, a sawmill at Coulee Dam and at Twisp and Lincoln, all in central Washington. In 1974 the entire operation was sold to Crown Zellerbach.
In 1948, E.W. Stuchell entered into a partnership with Harry O'Donnell and Lawrence McClelland, both of Seattle, Washington, to build a mill at Forest Hill, Oregon, which later became the American River Pine. This operation continued until 1955 when it was sold.
In 1953 the Kinzua Pine Mill and Timber, consisting of 600 million feet of Ponderosa pine, at Kinzua, Oregon was purchased by a group one of which was E.W. Stuchell, and he became and is still a co-manager with Harry O'Donnell in this pine operation. Others in the group were M.A. Wyman, M.H. Wyman, D.E. Wyman and Bryant R. Dunn.
This operation produces approximately 60 million feet a year, 85% of which is pine and has timber back in of it to insure 15 to 20 years of steady production.
In 1958, the Kinzua group acquired a small sawmill in Heppner, Oregon. By the mid 1970's they expanded into a plywood plant and a modern sawmill. The mill at Kinzua was torn down in 1978 due to age and obsolete machinery. The plant site and town were cleared and are now part of the forest land. The plywood plant in Heppner shut down in the early 1980's. The sawmill is still operating.
During World War II, E.W. Stuchell and Edwin J. Templeton purchased a shipyard site in Everett, Washington and during this time they built 11 ships and 2 scows. After the termination of the war, the ship building ceased and the plant continued operating as the Everett Marine Ways in the capacity of a machine shop."
