In researching my third great grandfather, William Thomson, son of Edward Thomson and his wife Mary, b. 3 Jun 1795, Philadelphia, and baptized at Old St. Paul’s church, in Jan 1796, I discovered that there is a lot of confusion about the denomination of this old Philadelphia church. There is a St. Paul’s in Philadelphia, not located in the Society Hill area, that is a Catholic church. But, starting with its founding in the 1760s, Old St. Paul’s in Philadelphia, located at 225 South Third Street, (Third Street and Willing’s Alley) in Society Hill (and still standing there today) was originally Anglican and, then and today, part of the Protestant Episcopal denomination.
